This week marks 10 years since the June 2013 uprisings in Brazil. What started as small protests in a few cities against rising transit fares spread into a nationwide popular revolt against the cost of living under capitalism.
The uprising of 2013 was initiated by autonomous and anti-capitalist movements. A decade later, however, the ruling PT, the Workers Party—now that they are back in an alliance with the center and sectors of the right wing—along with corporate media and pundits are trying to frame that uprising as the supposed origin of the extreme right that came to power in 2018 with Jair Bolsonaro. This is a new phenomenon: for the first time, the traditional left is not trying to co-opt the uprising, but rather to associate street protest and autonomous mobilization with fascism in a dishonest attempt to blame the oppressed for the reaction of the oppressors.

In a new filing in federal court, the government of Atlanta aims to shut down even the possibility of a referendum on the police militarization facility known as Cop City, arguing that the citizens of the city have no right to break off the city government's contract with the Atlanta Police Foundation.
Ordinarily, democracy functions as a sort of theater in which the authorities manage people's perceptions of what the general public desires. In this case, however, the authorities in Atlanta are so determined to channel millions of dollars to the police that they are prepared to do without any illusions about democracy or anything like it.

Vladimir Putin has some nerve to say that Yevgeny Prigozhin's rebellion is "pushing the country toward anarchy and fratricide."
Torturing and assassinating dissidents was fratricide. Invading Ukraine was fratricide. Anarchy is the opposite of fratricide, the opposite of civil war: it is the condition that prevails when people do not compete to rule each other. Totalitarianism always leads to bloody conflicts for power.

Burning cars crashed on deadly highways. Disabled elders rolled out of hospitals to die in the street. Unhoused people’s homes and lifesaving possessions crushed under bulldozers. Tasering, beating, and shooting by cops.
Rampant domestic abuse, child abuse, sex abuse.
Violent evictions, forced starvation, deaths of despair.
Workers threatened, abused, and stolen from by their bosses.
Immigrants deprived, brutalized, caged up, and killed.
BIPOC targeted, harassed, swat’ed, arrested, murdered.
Queer people harassed, persecuted, prosecuted, and killed.
Ubiquitous torture against detained and incarcerated people. Starvation, exposure, rape, overdose, withdrawal, beating, murder.
Vast slave labor in prison farms and prison factories, trafficked workers.
Nearly everyone suffering illness and injury kept from medical care. Over a million dead from Covid medical neglect. Chronic illnesses and injuries everywhere.
And every day the violence gets worse.
Every year is a new record for police murder and police brutality.
20% more people die every day compared to just a few years ago. And the deaths keeps rising. Everything keeps rising.
Climate apocalypse, also the violence of this system, has really started to set in: killing thousands in climatic events and exposing refugees to the some of the worst violence this system has to offer.
This system, which calls any resistance or push back “violent,” is nothing but violence and abuse and control.
The moments when we seem to recognize this, when people mobilize to fight against the rising tide, seem almost arbitrary.
Every day brings a thousand tragedies, a thousand outrages.
When do people reject the callous lies, the clear hypocrisy, and the constant constant violence of “business as usual?”
When do people mobilize their rage?
What is the source of a movement? Of a moment? Of action?
Electoralists should be called out for LARPing, particularly the gun control advocates.
