⚡️ The Earth has a pulse — and satellites help us see it.
This excerpt from the "YOU:MATTER" exhibition at the National Museum of Science and Media shows how everything on the planet is connected — and how space technology makes these connections visible.
Satellites track photosynthesis using the faint glow that plants emit, which helps us understand how actively they absorb carbon dioxide. Together with other data, such as the "greenness" index, this provides scientists with insights into global carbon cycles and the health of the planet.
NASA, NOAA, JPL, and other agencies use these observations to better understand and care for the Earth.
Where is the James Webb telescope now?
Spoiler alert: it's not in Earth's orbit — it's stuck 1.5 million km away from us, at the L2 Lagrange point.
But even there, it doesn't just stand still — it spins in a smooth loop around this point, in a so-called halo orbit.
What for? To always catch the Sun (for food) and at the same time not fall into the shadow of the Earth or the Moon.
The Webb telescope looks at space in infrared light, which is essentially heat. If the telescope itself heats up even a little bit, it will see instead of galaxies.… himself.
Therefore, it must be kept at a temperature of -233 °C. This is where his huge five—layer heat shield comes into play - it is always between the telescope and the Sun, the Earth and the Moon.
Perspective decides everything.
The Cassini spacecraft captured a shot where Saturn's rings literally cut the image in half. The satellites Mimas and Janus are modestly glowing from above, and the elegant crescent of Tethys is from below.

🚀 Sound in space?
In outer space, sound does not spread — there is simply no air there. But something curious happens during the separation of the rocket stages.
There is some oxygen left between them, trapped in an airtight space. When the steps separate, this air escapes outside — for a split second creating a tiny bubble through which sound waves can pass. And so — the camera on board actually records the sound of the next engine starting.
It's the rarest moment when space is not only visible, but also audible.

Astronomers have found a new mysterious object far beyond Pluto — 2017 OF201, with a diameter of about 700 km, and it may well enter the club of dwarf planets.
