Srila Prabhupada’s family
Srila Prabhupada took his birth in a Vaisnava family, and his father was a pure devotee. So from the very beginning of his life, he was hearing about Krsna.
Srila Prabhupada described his mother as always being concerned for his health and well-being. "If my mother were alive today, she would be happy just to see that I am living."
Prabhupada was named Abhay Charan De (a name of Krsna which means that His lotus feet give protection from all fear). His father would say to sadhus who visited their home, "Please pray that my son, Abhay Charan, can become a pure devotee of Radharani."
Srila Prabhupada described many boyhood activities such as asking his father to buy him two water pistols. ("Why two?" "Because I have two hands.") Also, as a small child he insisted on performing a six-day Ratha-yatra festival in honor of Lord Krsna. One of his early memories is of trying to fly a kite. When it would not take flight he and his sister ran with the kite and prayed, "Dear God, please let it fly."
As a small boy he used to consult the train schedules and meditate on how he could save the fare to go from his native Calcutta to Vrndavana, the site of Lord Krsna's eternal pastimes.
Our spiritual master once said, "I cannot remember a time when I was not Krsna conscious."
Srila Prabhupada offered memories from his own life to illustrate the Bhagavad-gita teaching that the self remains the same although the body changes from boyhood to youth (dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara). And so he remembered the time of a plague in Calcutta. In order to end the plague, a local babaji organized a mass kirtana. Srila Prabhupada remembered that at the time he was only half as tall as most adults, and he was trying to look out the window at the harinana kirtana party.

Tamal Krishna Goswami: Srila Prabhupada first gave Gayatri-mantra in Boston, and then in September of 1968 he came to San Francisco and gave some of us Gayatri-mantra. He taught us how to chant and gave out a sheet with the Gayatri-mantra. Jayananda found it difficult to pronounce the mantra, so he decided to ask Srila Prabhupada about the pronunciation and he took me along with him.
We sat in front of Srila Prabhupada and Prabhupada asked him to pronounce the mantra. As Jayananda tried, Prabhupada leaned back and roared with laughter. Srila Prabhupada shook his head and said, "It's hopeless. But it doesn't matter. Because you are so sincere, Krishna will accept your chanting."

You are very fortunate because Krishna saved you from all that nonsense
Jagattarini-devi dasi: Some of Prabhupada's disciples were in the midst of famous or infamous careers just before they joined him to take up full-time spiritual life. Jagattarini-devi dasi had been a leading movie actress in Australia and had just made a film with Mick Jagger before deciding to surrender to Srila Prabhupada.
One time while Prabhupada was visiting in Australia, a reporter picked up on the story that the former actress had now become a renounced devotee. They ran two pictures in the newspaper showing Jagattarini first as a movie actress with make-up and fashionable attire, and then in a sari, washing a pot. When the newspaper came out, the devotees were amused and wanted to bring it to Prabhupada, although Jagattarini was frightened that he would be displeased.
When Prabhupada saw the photos, he laughed.
"In this picture as a movie actress, she looks morose and she is not very beautiful" said Prabhupada.
Then he pointed to the picture of his disciple in a sari. "But in this picture she looks very lively and very beautiful. But to the materialist, he will see it the other way."
That evening in the temple, when Jagattarini approached Prabhupada's vyasasana to receive a piece of prasadam, he said to her, "You are very fortunate because Krishna saved you from all that nonsense."

What she wanted me to tell everyone was that the program that you taught us, Śrīla Prabhupāda, works.
The following is excerpt from Ameyatma Prabhu's 2022 offering to Srila Prabhupada.
-----------------------------------
To His Divine Grace, A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda,
It has been 46 long years since I last saw you in person, in 1976. You never made it back to Los Angeles in 1977 – and I was not able to come to India to see you again. For 41 of those years I had a friend, a partner, my wife – who also left this world this year – and in an auspicious way. She had kidney disease, then congestive heart failure due to high blood pressure. In the last month she knew she would be leaving soon. In her last days, she hadn’t slept for 36 hours, then finally she fell asleep. After 18 hours I tapped her on her shoulder and she immediately woke up, saying “Rādhā, Rādhā”. I had never heard her call out to Radha like that before. She again said “Rādhā, Rādhā”, then she told me to start chanting. I put a recording of you, Śrīla Prabhupāda, chanting Hare Krishna mahā-mantra, and I and our son who was home both started chanting the mahā-mantra. She asked for her Jagannath Deity, and I placed Him next to her. I put fresh tilak on her, and placed a Tulsi leaf in her mouth, and she left this world very peacefully, no struggle. She just stopped breathing. But, Kṛṣṇa was there, in the form of His holy name, being chanted not just by her husband and son, but, by you, Śrīla Prabhupāda, the pure devotee of Rādhā and Krishna.
What was most auspicious, in my view, was that when I woke her up, and she called out for “Rādhā, Rādhā”. I knew right then that she was already on her way back home, and my waking her up brought her back here, just long enough so that she could depart in a most auspicious way.
Then, a week after she left, she appeared in my dream where she gave me a message and asked that I tell others. The message she wanted me to tell is this: She was a simple devotee. She never held any position, she was not in charge of any projects. Yet, she wanted not just me, but others to know that she is being taken back home, back to Godhead.
What she wanted me to tell everyone was that the program that you taught us, Śrīla Prabhupāda, works. All we have to do is follow the simple program that you have so kindly given us. Just chant our 16 rounds daily, read your books, and render service to Krishna in the form of His Deity, to render service to you, Śrīla Prabhupāda, Krishna’s pure devotee. We don’t have to become a big important devotee. We don’t have to be in-charge of this or that, or have followers, or be famous. If that becomes our service to you and Krishna, then fine, we carry it out the same as we clean the temple room floor, or wash Krishna’s pots. We just do whatever service you and Krishna gives us in a humble and devotional mood. And, that is the most important part – the devotional mood. Even if we are not able to render physical service, our mood must always be of devotion to Krishna.
This was the message that she asked me to tell others. That your teachings work, Śrīla Prabhupāda. All we have to do is follow what you have taught us, and regardless of who we are, regardless even if we have no important position, we will be earning our ticket to go back home, back to Godhead, where we can serve you and Radha and Krishna directly.
So, I have decided to make this message as my offering to you, this year. To tell others what my wife told me, that your teachings work, Śrīla Prabhupāda.

How to Carry Your Baby - Monkey Way or the Cat Way
Satsvarupa Dasa Goswami: One morning Prabhupada arrived in the park, stepped out of his car and waited for the devotees who came in another car to join him. Lilavati Dasi had difficulty getting out of the car, because she had her baby Subhadra in a carrier on her back. When she finally did get out of the car, Prabhupada turned and laughed at her, saying, "Ah, burden of affection". 'Yes, Swamiji,' Lilavati replied. They all began to walk together along the path. "So there are two ways to carry a baby," Prabhupada said, tapping his cane on the ground in time with his regular stride. "There is the monkey way and the cat way. Do you know this?" 'No, Swamiji,' said Lilavati.
"Well, which way do you think is better?" Prabhupada asked her. "The monkey way or the cat way?" She could not understand or imagine what he meant. Prabhupada continued, "The monkey baby climbs on the back of the mother and holds on and this is the way he travels, and the kitten is carried in the teeth of the mother. So which is better?"
Lilavati could still not understand which way could be better, and they both sounded very difficult to her. "Well," Prabhupada said, "The monkey baby is very small and very weak and he is holding on to the mother by his own strength, but the kitten is being supported by the strength of the mother. So which way do you think is better?" Then she understood. 'The cat way is better.' "Yes," Prabhupada said, "That is the difference between the yogi and the devotee. The yogi is trying to climb on the back of the Absolute Truth by his own strength but he is very weak, so he will fall, but a devotee, he cries out for Krishna". As he spoke the word Krishna, Prabhupada held his arms up high; looked up at the clear morning sky and said, "A devotee cries out for Krishna, and Krishna picks him up."
