The art of pushing at a Person's weak point, until he dies

Satsvarupa Dasa Goswami: He said he wanted to visit Dvaraka as he had never been there, and never been to Hardwar or other holy places all over India. I was much more serious about hearing from my spiritual master than in visiting holy places. He noted this and he liked me for it. He said he knows the art, like karate, of pushing at a person's weak point until he dies. In argument he said he finds out their weak point and pushes on it until they die.

Human form of life is for chanting Hare Krishna

Satsvarupa Dasa Goswami: You say life is a dream. Yes, he said, at night what you have dreamt is gone in the day. And at night, your day's activities (I am married, in my house) are forgotten while you dream. They are both dreams you are just a visitor to both. The day dream seems more real because it is of longer duration. The highest vision is that everything is animate. Even in the atom, the soul is there. Govinda is there and where He is, He is not alone. Everything is there. Even in a shoe, in the make-up of the atoms, He is there. It is not dead. In my body there are lots of living entities, but I am predominant because I have the most developed consciousness. I am most fortunate to have the human form of life. Although it is a dream, in this body we are able to come awake. The Vedas are addressing, uttisthaya, wake up, wake up. Now you have the opportunity of the human form of life. Chanting Hare Krishna is reality. We are in the process. If you know Krishna, you know everything.

She gave up everything for Krishna, now you should do the same thing

Satarupa dasi : I became Miss Denmark, and that propelled me to a career as a model. I became the most expensive model in London and Paris and I was working every single day for Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire. In 1974, I had a cover of Paris Match, which is a big newspaper, and it was sold in 24 countries with my cover with a sari on and the line was "I left everything for Krishna." There were four pages inside-me making garlands in front of the Deities, dancing around Tulasi, dancing and chanting Harinam in front of the Eiffel Tower. So when Paris Match came out, of course they sent it to Prabhupada in Bombay, where he had it on his desk for one week. He would say to the people coming, "She gave up everything for Krishna, now you should do the same thing." Prabhupada would be preaching like that.

Your fingernails should be short and clean

Pariksit Dasa: In 1972, we had established ISKCON Press at Tiffany Place, near the Brooklyn temple. It was a little dangerous there, a couple of devotees had gotten beaten up so we also established night guards. Once, when I was stuck on night guard duty over at Tiffany Place, Prabhupada had just arrived and everybody else was in the temple with him. It wasn't until seven or eight o'clock in the morning, when it was time for me to receive my gayatri mantra initiation, that I came to the temple. I went into Prabhupada's room. Prabhupada was about to give me my gayatri mantra when he looked at my hands and said, "Your fingernails should be short and clean, like mine." I had been neglecting my fingernails for a while. They were long and because I was involved in construction, they weren't clean. Ever since Prabhupada said that, however, I've kept my fingernails short and clean.

Srila Prabhupada Always Reciprocated Appropriately

Nanda Kishor Dasa: The first time I came before Prabhupada, I was thinking, "Wow, I'm a great devotee." Brahmananda, the temple president of 26 Second Avenue, had made me think like that just to encourage me. So I thought, "Here I am bringing prasadam to Prabhupada", and he's going to say something to me like what Bhaktisiddhanta said to him, that, "You should preach the message of Lord Chaitanya. " Prabhupada took the prasadam I brought, but he did not even recognize my existence. He could do that. It was as if he said, "You think that you're a big devotee" "This is how I deal with you." And if you were actually humble, he might pat you on the head. He always reciprocated appropriately.

Who Is The Cause Of Krishna ?

Giriraj Swami: When I became well enough, I began to accompany Srila Prabhupada on his morning walks. On one, I asked, "We say that Krishna is the original cause of all causes, but some people question, 'Then who is the cause of Krishna?' How do we answer them?" Srila Prabhupada replied, "According to our information, Krishna is the first cause. If you do research and find someone who is the cause of Krishna, we will worship him. But until then, you should worship Krishna."

Teaching By Example With A Very Profound Effect

Giriraj Swami: At the Ardha-kumbha-mela in Allahabad in January 1971, our program was very rigorous, because it was bitterly cold at night and we were expected to get up at four o’clock in the morning to bathe and attend mangala-arati. A few staunch devotees like Tamal Krishna and Hamsaduta got up early, by three or three-thirty, and walked all the way from our camp to the Ganges to take an early-morning bath. But those of us staying in the brahmacari tent were not so staunch, and generally when it was time to get up at four o’clock it was so cold out that we preferred to remain in our sleeping bags.

Srila Prabhupada began to notice that some of us were coming late to mangala-arati and that some were not coming at all. He became very upset about this, because he knew how important mangala-arati was for us. So one morning, although he was a little frail in health, he got up at four o'clock and came out in his gamcha, sat down under the hand pump, and took an ice-cold bath - just to encourage us to get up, bathe, and come to mangala-arati. His action had a very profound effect on all of us, and we felt so ashamed that we just couldn’t sleep late any more.

We Realize God Simply By Eating

Giriraj Swami: In Bombay, Srila Prabhupada received an invitation from Hari Krishna Das Agarwal, an industrialist who founded Prem Kutir, a religious institution where Prabhupada had stayed for some days before going to America. Hari Krishna Das invited Prabhupada and the devotees to attend a Vedanta Sammelan conference in Amritsar, and Srila Prabhupada agreed. Thus Prabhupada and his party of disciples went by train to Amritsar.

The conference was held at the Vedanta Ashram, which was dedicated to the propagation of impersonal Mayavada philosophy, and the buildings and walkways displayed signs with popular Mayavadi slogans such as tat tvam asi (you are that) and aham brahmasmi (I am spirit). We had programs in the evening, and every morning we would go into Prabhupada’s room and sing the Gurv-ashtaka prayers in front of his Radha-Krishna Deities, and he would speak with us. One morning he explained the different Mayavadi slogans. And he added that the organizers knew that he did not agree with their philosophy but that they had still invited him and his disciples because they had known that the "foreign" devotees' kirtana would attract people.

While discussing their philosophy, Prabhupada commented, "They will talk and talk about Vedanta, but it is simply mental speculation, and they never come to any conclusion." Just then, one of the devotees brought the morning offering from Srila Prabhupada's Deities to him. Srila Prabhupada continued, "They will go on speculating for many lifetimes" - from the plate of maha-prasada he popped a sweet in his mouth - "but we will realize God simply by eating."

The Benefit Of Study Of Great Characters

Giriraj Swami: Srila Prabhupada told me that if I simply studied the character of Lord Caitanya in Sri Caitanya-caritamrita - as a Vaishnava, even apart from His being the Supreme Personality of Godhead - I would become perfect. Similarly, if people study Srila Prabhupada as a Vaishnava or as a great acharya or as a great personality - apart from his inner identity, which we may or may not know - they will benefit.

Meeting between His Divine Grace and Dr. S. Radhakrishnan

Gurudas: One time we rode by train with Prabhupada to Madras, South India, for a spiritual conference and radio show. A meeting had been arranged in Madras between His Divine Grace and Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the former vice president of India. Dr. Radhakrishnan had translated a widely read version of the Bhagavad-gita, but one that had left out the importance of Krishna as the speaker and instead glorified the song. Dr. Radhakrishnan's Gita was another impersonal interpretation. We all knew this.

After some cordial greetings, the former vice president asked Prabhupada how many temples existed in the West. Prabhupada quickly changed the subject and asked why and how Dr. Radhakrishnan did not recognize Krishna as God. Prabhupada continued, "Krishna says in Bhagavad-gita, 'Offer a leaf to Me.'" (9:12).

Dr. Radhakrishnan could not answer Prabhupada. He tried to change the subject and soon became flustered. This formerly powerful man just silently sat there, trembling. We left soon after this, and I could feel Prabhupada's displeasure. He said, "Just see, the great vice president of India does not know the meaning of Bhagavad-gita!"

I thought I had lost the poem

Gurudas: In 1969, shortly after we had moved into the Bury Place temple in London, which was only two blocks from the British Museum, I began to search through the archives of the India Office library and the British Museum library for the writings of Bhaktivinoda Thakur, Rupa Goswami, Krishna das Kaviraj, or any other authors in our Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. I found many treasures, including the Poriad by Bhaktivinoda Thakur, a Bengali Bhakti Rasamrita Sindhu, some original paintings of the Jagannatha festival in Puri, India, and photographs of past spiritual masters in our tradition.

The British Museum library is one of the largest in the world, and it houses books from around the world. Since the British Empire once included India, many old books from India found their way to Great Russel Street. Each culture influenced the other immensely.

The most exciting treasure I found was a 1936 issue of the Harmonist, the magazine founded by Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati, my grandfather guru. I held this booklet in my hands, thinking that perhaps it had been touched by those same saintly hands! Inside was even more of a gift, for the magazine contained a poem by my Guru Maharaja, A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami. For the birthday anniversary celebration of His Divine Grace Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Prabhupada, at the Bombay Gaudiya Math in February, 1936, my guru composed and read this poem:

1.
Adore adore ye all
the happy day
blessed than heaven
sweeter than May
When he appeared in Puri
the holy place
My Lord and Master
His Divine Grace.

2.
Oh! my master
the evangelic angel.
Give us thy light,
Light up thy candle
Struggle for existence
a human race
the only hope
His Divine Grace.

3.
Misled we are
all going astray
Save us Lord
Our fervent prayer
Wonder thy ways
to turn our face
Adore thy feet
Your Divine Grace.

4.
Forgotten Krishna
We fallen souls
Paying most heavy
The illusion's tolls
Darkness around
All distress
the only hope
His Divine Grace.

5.
Message of service
Thou hast brought
A healthful life
As Chaitanya wrought.
Unknown to all
it's full of brace.
That's your gift
Your Divine Grace.

6.
Absolute is sentient
Thou hast proved,
Impersonal calamity
Thou hast moved
This gives us a life
Anew and fresh
Worship thy feet
Your Divine Grace

7.
Had you not come
Who had told
The message of Krishna
Forceful and bold.
That's your right
you have the mace.
Save me a fallen
Your Divine Grace.

8.
The line of service
As drawn by you,
Is pleasing and healthy
Like morning dew.
The oldest of all
But in new dress
Miracle done
Your Divine Grace

 - Abhay Charan dasa

I sent a photocopy of Srila Prabhupada's poem to him. He was very thankful, and it was relayed to me by others how much he appreciated my finding it. Later, he commented, "I thought I had lost it [the poem]."

Chanters Cannot Fall Down

Giriraj Swami: In Vrindavana in 1977, Srila Prabhupada suddenly awoke and told the devotees attending him, "I had a dream. There was a big assembly of drunkards and chanters. The drunkards were madmen. Some of the drunkards were becoming chanters. But the drunkards would not stop fighting. They were so crazy.” Tamal Krishna Goswami asked, "Were you also there?" "Yes, I was standing there also." "Were some of the chanters becoming drunkards?" "No," said Srila Prabhupada. "Chanters cannot fall down. Their names are listed - back to home, back to Godhead. They are in Krishna’s family."

There is no devotion without guru

Satsvarupa Dasa Goswami: Somebody said, "If one without a guru chants the name with devotion".

Prabhupada: There is no devotion without guru. That is the defect in modern society they imagine you can manufacture their own way. Rupa Gosvami said that the first thing is to approach the guru.

Question: Then all is fruitless without the guru? But it is rare to get a genuine guru.

Prabhupada: Lord Caitanya said in answer to this, brahmanda brahmite kona bhagyavan jiva. If you are actually hankering within, He will give you a guru, if you are fortunate. Even Lord Caitanya accepted a guru. Why manufacture that you do not need a guru? Do not do this.

Srila Prabhupada's Made Me Feel Like A Fool

Guru Kripa Dasa: Prabhupada never talked to me. He only asked me questions I could not answer, like, "Why does the grass grow in the cracks on the sidewalk?" Or, when we were walking along the beach in Madras, and he saw a statue across the street of a man on a horse, he said, "Who is that man on the horse?" How would I know? His questions made me feel like a fool. Murkha, fool, one should always be a murkha in front of the guru. As soon as you think, "Now I've become friendly with the guru, now I know a little bit more", then you are finished. People sometimes think, "Now I will go somewhere else and I will get some higher instruction." No. Prabhupada will instruct you according to your surrender, according to what you are ready for. But if you think for a second that the guru doesn't know something, then you are finished. Srila Prabhupada strongly ingrained that idea in me. He made me feel like a fool.

Even If We Lose Money, We Will Still Protect The Cows

Giriraj Swami: Once, Hamsaduta Dasa came to meet Srila Prabhupada in Juhu. He had been having difficulties with the other leaders of the ISKCON Hyderabad farm project, and he wanted to share his grief with Srila Prabhupada, who listened patiently and with sympathy. I was struck not only by how kind and compassionate Prabhupada was but also by how much time he had to spend with us to smooth our rough relationships and heal our hurt hearts.

As I sat there listening, and marveling at Srila Prabhupada’s deep care and expertise, the topic turned to cows on the farm. Hamsaduta explained his strategy, that the devotees would create such a superior breed of cow that produced such large quantities of milk, that they would have more than enough milk for their own needs and would be able to sell the surplus for a good profit. This way, he reasoned, people would see that keeping cows was profitable and they wouldn’t kill them. Having listened carefully, Srila Prabhupada responded, "This is not the idea, to keep cows and get milk and produce yogurt and cheese and ghee and by selling them to become fat, rich capitalists. The idea is to please Krishna. That is bhakti. In the Bhagavad-gita (18.44) Krishna says, krishi-go-rakshya: 'agriculture and cow protection.' We protect the cows because Krishna wants it, for Krishna’s pleasure - whether we make money or not. Even if we lose money, we will still protect the cows - and depend on Krishna. Our interest is to please Krishna. That is bhakti."

ISKCON Bullets: Golden Sweetballs

Giriraj Swami: In the early days of the Krishna consciousness movement, sweetballs - gulabjamuns, cheese balls fried in pure ghee and soaked in sugar water - were considered the ultimate experience in transcendental bliss. Sweetballs were so important that Srila Prabhupada used to keep a jar of them by the temple door at 26 Second Avenue. He had so much faith in Krishna’s prasada - just as he did in Krishna’s name - that if the young people took prasada they would become purified and satisfied. It is the devotees’ only sense gratification. A person can feel so satisfied by taking krishna-prasada that he will not think of any other type of enjoyment.

So in the beginning Srila Prabhupada encouraged the devotees to take more and more prasada. Anyone who visited him had to get a sweetball, and Srila Prabhupada’s were wonderful. He kept a jar of such golden balls suspended in gooey sugar water near the temple entrance, so if anyone wanted to leave Krishna consciousness, he would first have to pass the sweetballs. And definitely the person would think, "Before I go, let me take one more - or two or three or four." Most likely, he would realize the higher taste of Krishna consciousness and give up the idea of leaving altogether. Or he would become so full that he couldn’t move. In any case, Srila Prabhupada called sweetballs "ISKCON bullets - they shoot maya dead."

Analysis of ledger of life

Giriraj Swami: Once, while speaking to a businessman in Bombay, Srila Prabhupada quoted a verse from Canakya Pandita: "At the time of death one cannot purchase one more moment of life, even for all the riches in the world." Time is invaluable and must be invested carefully. "So we should utilize each moment for the greatest gain," Srila Prabhupada continued. "In the ledger of your life, all time engaged in Krishna consciousness is profit, whereas all time engaged in material activities is loss. If we want the greatest profit in life, we must use every moment in Krishna consciousness."

Anger Used In The Service Of The Lord

Giriraj Swami: One young American who attended the pandal program became so inspired by Srila Prabhupada and the devotees that he came to meet Prabhupada after the program ended. In a heartfelt display of eloquence, he expressed his appreciation to Srila Prabhupada, "If the world could just become Krishna conscious, there could be peace and happiness. People would learn to love each other and give up their hatred and anger."

Srila Prabhupada replied, "Anger? Is there something wrong with anger? Did someone tell you that anger is wrong?" The young man didn’t know what to say. Then Srila Prabhupada explained, "Krishna spoke the whole Bhagavad-gita just to make Arjuna angry. He wanted to convince Arjuna to fight and kill the enemy, and how can you fight and kill unless you are angry? He spoke the whole Bhagavad-gita just to make Arjuna angry, so how can you say that anger is wrong?" Srila Prabhupada explained that anything can be used in the service of the Lord - including anger.

Who comes first?

Giriraj Swami: Radha Krishna-pranaya-vikritir hladini saktir asmad / ekatmanav api bhuvi pura deha-bhedam gatau tau / caitanyakhyam prakatam adhuna tad- dvayam caikyam aptam / radha-bhava-dyuti-suvalitam naumi krishna-svarupam

"The loving affairs of Sri Radha and Krishna are transcendental manifestations of the Lord’s internal pleasure-giving potency. Although Radha and Krishna are one in Their identity, They separated Themselves eternally. Now, these two transcendental identities have again united, in the form of Sri Krishna Caitanya. I bow down to Him, who has manifested Himself with the sentiment and complexion of Srimati Radharani although He is Krishna Himself." —Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi-lila 1.5

Once, in Calcutta, Acyutananda Swami had a conversation with our landlord, a Bengali gentleman named Mr. Ray. The landlord had told Acyutananda his version of Radha and Krishna and Lord Caitanya. He said that Lord Caitanya is the original and that Radha and Krishna come from Him. And he said that Lord Caitanya is even greater or more beautiful than Radha and Krishna, as rasagulla is better than milk and sugar. Acyutananda was somewhat confused by the landlord’s philosophy, so he approached Srila Prabhupada to understand the truth.

Acyutananda Swami presented the whole discussion to Srila Prabhupada. Then he asked, "Who comes first?" Srila Prabhupada replied that Radha and Krishna come first and that when They combine together, the combination is Lord Caitanya. "The same example: first milk and sugar exist separately, and then they combine together to make rasagulla.” Then Acyutan-nda asked, “Well, who is greater?" Srila Prabhupada paused for some moments, closed his eyes, and then answered, "Radharani is greater." Then he pointed to a picture on the wall, where Srimati Radharani was sitting on a raised platform and Krishna was kneeling at Her feet, trying to please Her. And Srila Prabhupada said, "Srimati Radharani is the greatest." Then he pointed to another picture, where baby Krishna was carrying the shoes of Nanda Maharaja on His head, and said, "Nanda Maharaja is the greatest." Then there was even a picture of Mother Yasoda with a stick and little Krishna cowering in fear. Srila Prabhupada concluded, "The devotee is the greatest."

We Are Successful When We Please Krishna

Giriraj Swami: One of our best life members in Bombay was Sri Biharilal Khandelwal. He was a very pious man from a prominent industrial family. In fact, he was the first life member in India to pledge one lakh (one hundred thousand) rupees for any of Srila Prabhupada’s projects. One day his secretary phoned and gave us the bad news: Sri Biharilal Khandelwal had passed away. We were requested to come and perform kirtan in the presence of his widow and other family members. So I organized whatever devotees I could, and we went to the widow’s residence to chant and try to console her with some words from the Bhagavad-gita.

One devotee we could not inform was Haridasa Prabhu. That evening Haridasa was fanning Srila Prabhupada on the terrace on top of his apartment. At seven o’clock Srila Prabhupada noticed that there was no sound of kirtan from the temple. So he asked Haridasa why. "The devotees must have gone to the city to collect and not yet returned," Haridasa replied. Prabhupada said, "This was not my idea, that they should go to the city and collect all day and night. Our process is to please Krishna. They may go at nine and return by five, and then chant and dance in front of the Deities. Otherwise, they will become like karmis."

"We are successful because we try to please Krishna and Krishna is merciful and reciprocates with us. Otherwise, Mr. Nair was much more powerful than we were. He had money, influence, his own daily newspaper, he had contacts, so many politicians and government officers. And who were we? We had no money, no influence, and no support. Yet we were successful - by Krishna’s grace. So we should come and sing and dance in front of the Deities and please Them, and by Their grace, we will get all success. We are not successful by our own strength; we are successful by Krishna’s grace."
