Fabio Cannavaro never wanted to be a defender. Watching Paolo Rossi win the FIFA World Cup in 1982, he wanted to always be on the front.
But when he arrived in Napoli as a ball boy, one of the directors at the club’s youth academy told him to be a defender.
“And that was it. No explanation, no reason,” Cannavaro reflected in an interview with The Players’ Tribune.
He then started learning from Italian great Ciro Ferreira and Argentine legend Diego Maradona.
“One day, Maradona started to come toward me, the ball tapping off his toes with each dribble,” Cannavaro said, “Without a thought, I made a move for the ball. I tackled Maradona. The genius! The legend!”
Cannavaro would go on to become an Italian legend himself, winning the FIFA World Cup in 2006. #Onthisday in 2006, the defender beat Thierry Henry and Gianluigi Buffon to win the Ballon d’Or. He remains the last centre-back to win the award to date. #OTD
