Phytopharmaceuticals mediated Furin and TMPRSS2 receptor blocking: can it be a potential therapeutic option for Covid-19?
New paper on COVID-19 by USERN interest groups
🌀Covid-19 outbreak creates global panic across the continents, as people from almost all countries and territories have been affected by this highly contagious viral disease.
🌀We have proposed two novel drug targets, Furin and TMPRSS2, as Covid-19 treatment strategy.
🌀We have highlighted this target-oriented novel drug delivery strategy, based on their pathophysiological implication on SARS-CoV-2 infection.
🌀An earlier study suggested that Furin and TMPRSS2 knockout mice had reduced level of viral load and a lower degree of organ damage such as the lung.
🌀Furin and TMPRSS2 receptor may initiate to express and activate for processing the virus to cause cellular infection by replication within the host cell.

Cardiovascular diseases burden in COVID-19: Systematic review and meta-analysis
New paper on COVID-19 by USERN interest groups
🌀High rate of cardiovascular disease (CVD) have been reported among patients with novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Meanwhile there were controversies among different studies about CVD burden in COVID-19 patients.
🌀Hence, we aimed to study CVD burden among COVID-19 patients, using a systematic review and meta-analysis.
🌀Fifty-six studies entered into meta-analysis for ICU admission and mortality outcome and 198 papers for descriptive outcomes, including 159,698 COVID-19 patients.
🌀Results of meta-analysis indicated that acute cardiac injury, hypertension, heart Failure, arrhythmia, coronary artery disease, and cardiovascular disease, and hypertension were also significantly associated with ICU admission in COVID-19 patients.

Death due to COVID-19 in an Infant with Combined Immunodeficiencies
New paper on COVID-19 by USERN interest group
🌀Novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has affected millions of people, which led to death especially in older cases with underlying diseases.
🌀Meanwhile pediatric patients with inherited defects of T cell should potentially be prone to viral diseases.
🌀Herein, we report an infant with combined immunodeficiency who died because of COVID-19.

Dietary inflammatory index and depression: a meta-analysis
Low-grade chronic inflammation has been linked to the pathophysiology of depression.
This is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 6 studies that suggests that pro-inflammatory diet estimated by a higher DII score is independently associated with an increased risk of depression, particularly in women. However, more well-designed studies are needed to evaluate whether an anti-inflammatory diet can reduce the risk of depression.

Dietary Inflammatory Index and Cardiovascular Risk and Mortality—A Meta-Analysis
Diet and chronic inflammation have been suggested to be risk factors in the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and related mortality.

Louise Glück is the winner of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Literature for her ‘unmistakable poetic voice’.
Louise Glück in her lyric, The Wild Iris, imagines the self as unruly, as crossing the border between the human and the not human, as under construction, and in a state of becoming.
The word “iris” in Latin means “rainbow”; it is also the rainbow goddess “whose prism-bridge connects sky and earth.”

Human coronaviruses SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2 in children
New paper on COVID-19 by USERN interest group
🌀COVID-19 has caused an epidemic with high mortality and morbidity since December 2019, in Wuhan, China.
🌀The pediatric population is just as likely as adults to become infected with COVID-19.
🌀The pediatric population may be asymptotic or have milder symptoms than adults; they can be potential carriers of the disease.
🌀COVID-19 mainly cause fever, respiratory symptoms, and other flu-like manifestations in pediatrics.
🌀Public education as well as isolation of the contaminated people, should be taken into consideration.

Emerging Standards and the Hybrid Model for Organizing Scientific Events During and After The COVID-19 Pandemic
The paper by USERN 2020 speakers!
🌀During COVID19 pandemic, activities requiring human gatherings have either been postponed, cancelled, or held completely virtually.
🌀To supplement lack of in-person contact, people have increasingly turned to virtual settings on-line. However, emerging online technologies cannot fully replace in-person scientific events.
🌀To continue such activities, a hybrid model for scientific events could be a solution offering both in-person and virtual components. While participants can freely choose type of their participation.
🌀This new way of interaction between scholars can be considered as a part of a resilience system which was neglected previously and should become a part of the routine practice in scientific community.

Meta-analysis and the science of research synthesis
Meta-analysis, the quantitative synthesis of research results first introduced in the 1970s, has helped to establish evidence-based practice, resolve seemingly contradictory results, and has had a revolutionary
impact on many scientific fields.
The implementation of meta-analysis has engendered various criticisms and controversies, including mixing apples and oranges, and the proper relationship between primary researchers and research synthesists.
This is a review of the accomplishments, limitations, recent advances, and the direction of future developments in the field of research synthesis.

Viewpoint: Origin of SARS-CoV-2
New paper on COVID-19 by USERN interest group
🌀The origin of SARS-CoV-2 virus causing the COVID-19 pandemic has not yet been fully determined. Despite the consensus about the SARS-CoV-2 origin from bat CoV RaTG13, discrepancy to host tropism to other human Coronaviruses exist.
🌀SARS-CoV-2 also possesses some differences in its S protein receptor-binding domain, glycan-binding N-terminal domain and the surface of the sialic acid-binding domain. Despite similarities based on cryo-EM and biochemical studies, the SARS-CoV-2 shows higher stability and binding affinity to the ACE2 receptor.
🌀The SARS-CoV-2 does not appear to present a mutational “hot spot” as only the D614G mutation has been identified from clinical isolates.
🌀It can be hypothesized that the SARS-CoV-2 genome has adapted during human-to-human transmission.

Meta-analysis of the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and breast cancer risk
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women worldwide, representing 25% of all cancer cases. Chronic inflammation is important in the carcinogenesis process.
This is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 7 studies that supports the notion that pro-inflammatory diets (higher DII scores) are associated with increased breast cancer incidence. However, the research is not about significant associations but about moderate effect sizes.
