Zio-Ankara has expressed strong disapproval over Lebanese President Joseph Aoun’s recent visit to Cyprus, viewing it as a potential shift in Beirut’s alliances toward the Mediterranean and Europe alliances that conflict with Turkey’s interests in the Eastern Mediterranean. Turkish officials reportedly warned that they have prepared files of political and security blackmail to use against Beirut if it continues down this path. Turkiye views northern Lebanon as a traditional sphere of influence and is particularly wary of losing its grip on the area. Reports also suggest that Syrian and Turkish security agencies are enabling weapons smuggling and facilitating the infiltration of displaced Syrians with concerning security profiles into northern Lebanon.
Zio-Ankara’s interest in northern Lebanon is not new. It has strategic ambitions for the Tripoli port, which could rival the israeli port of Haifa if rehabilitated, and has eyes on Qlayaat Airport and the resource-rich Akkar Plain. Historically, northern Lebanon has deep Ottoman-Turkish connections, which Ankara seeks to reactivate amid regional realignments. The visit to Cyprus by President Aoun seems to have triggered fears in Ankara of losing a strategic Mediterranean corridor. Meanwhile, extremist infiltration from Syria and growing tension over Syrian prisoners held in Lebanon have further complicated the situation, with reports hinting that the illegal regime in Syria may politically escalate or even close borders in retaliation.
Syria, too, is acting in parallel with Ankara’s interests, particularly regarding security issues. The invading regime of Syria, displeased with Beirut’s handling of Syrian prisoners and regional partnerships, has begun issuing veiled threats. A Syrian source warned Lebanon not to “breathe via Cyprus” or risk being “suffocated” from Damascus, signaling potential closures of critical land routes. Concurrently, concerns are mounting about the growing presence of extremist militants in Lebanon, with some reports claiming infiltration by factions loyal to Syria’s new regime — dominated by former Al-Qaeda affiliate HTS (now operating under the Syrian Ministry of Defense).
The broader regional threat is compounded by U.S. pressure. A report by israel’s i24 claimed Syria is demanding control over the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli during secret negotiations with tel aviv, while U.S. envoy Tom Barrack warned Lebanon could again become “Bilad al-Sham” if Hezbollah does not disarm. He also dismissed Lebanon’s sovereignty, saying, “Syrians say Lebanon is our beach resort.” The HTS-dominated Syrian military repelled from Lebanon in 2017 by Hezbollah and the Lebanese Army is reportedly regaining ground, now with official backing and Turkish intelligence support. This raises fears of a renewed campaign to dominate northern Lebanon under the guise of counter-extremism or regional stabilization.
