🅾 What? How did that happen?
🛑 The United States recently elected a president against all odds. No one thought a billionaire reality TV star with no political experience could win, but he did. There is a famous quote that says, “In a democracy people get the leaders they deserve.”
But in this presidential election, the person with the most votes didn’t win.
The US chooses its president through an antiquated process called the Electoral College. The history of the Electoral College dates back to the beginning of the United States. The Founding Fathers chose the Electoral College system for different reasons. One reason was to try to balance the power between the states with bigger and smaller populations. States with large numbers of non-voting slaves worried they would be bullied by states with larger populations of white voters.
Nowadays, the Electoral College uses a system of 538 points, called ‘electoral votes,’ which decides the winner. Each of America’s fifty states is given a certain number of these points based on its size. The bigger the state, the more points it’s worth. The candidate with the most votes in each state gets all of that state’s points. So it’s all or nothing.
This Electoral College system creates many different imbalances in the voting process. For example, the state of California, with a population of 37 million, is worth 55 points. Wyoming, on the other hand, with a mere 563,000 people, is only worth 3 points. If you do the math, you find out that each point in Wyoming represents 187,000 people, while each point in California represents 677,000 people. That means voters in Wyoming have 3.6 times the voting power of voters in California!
This state-by-state Electoral College point system sometimes creates a situation where a candidate can get the most votes on a national level, but get fewer Electoral College points. Hillary Clinton got 2 million more votes than Donald Trump, but she received fewer Electoral College points. The same thing happened in the year 2000, when George Bush beat Al Gore with fewer votes, but more Electoral College points. In the end, the number of votes from real people doesn’t always decide an election.
Many people have complained that the Electoral College system is undemocratic and needs to change. So why has this antiquated system stuck around for all these years?
In 2012, Donald Trump said on Twitter, “The electoral college is a disaster for a democracy.” After his win in 2016, he unsurprisingly changed his tune. Trump now says, “The Electoral College is actually genius…”

The scientist who attempted to build a time machine
🍃🍃❤️❤️🍃🍃
For Professor of Physics, Ron Mallett, time travel isn't just a flight of
fancy. It's his life's obsession. Ron's fascination with time travel began
as a child. Like many lo-year-old boys, Ron worshipped the ground his
father walked on. His dad was a TV and radio repairman who could fix
just about anything. Ron described him as the center of his universe.
One night, Ron woke to the sound of his mother crying. His father had
died from a heart attack.
Ron was beside himself with grief. He couldn't comprehend the death
of his father. He said it was like Superman dying. Ron thought building
a time machine could save his father's life. He'd go back in time and tell
his father to quit smoking cigarettes and prevent his heart attack. He
began building a time machine in his basement. The project was
doomed to failure, but Ron never gave up. He later studied for a Ph.D. in
quantum physics and became a professor. He specialized in the study
of black holes. It cloaked his urge to study nothing but time travel.
At the age of V, Ron was forced to retire due to heart-related
problems. It gave him time to focus on building his time machine. He
worked 10 hours a day and made a blueprint for a time machine. His
theoretical findings were published as a cover article in The New
Scientist. After Fo years Ron finally came out of the closet. His lifelong
obsession was at last given the publicity it deserved. When quantum
physicist, Bryce DeWitt, heard Ron's theories of how lasers could be
used to bend space-time, he sang their praises.
He told Ron, "I don't know if you will ever see your father again, but I do
know he would have been proud of you." Ron has accepted that his
theories on time travel won't ever help his father. His theories are
based on Einstein's block model of space-time. It suggests that the
past, present and future are already written. If we were to travel back in
time, we could only experience it, but not alter it. In other words, what
will be will be. This knowledge didn't upset Ron.
He realized he had spent his life working to keep his dad's memory
alive. By the time he faced the fact he would never see his dad again,
he didn't need to. In this case, time itself was the greatest healer of all.

👤“Excuse me, where is the American Airlines check-in desk?”
👤“How many bags can I check?”
👤“Will my luggage go straight through, or do I need to pick it up in [Chicago]?”
👤“How much is the fee?”
👤If your bag is heavier than the weight limits, or if your bag is larger than the size limits, you may need to pay extra: an oversized baggage fee or overweight baggage fee (this can be $75 to $300). Some airlines in the United States also charge a fee for ALL checked bags (usually $15 to $30).
👤“Please mark this bag as ‘fragile.’”
Say this if you have fragile or sensitive items in your bag that might break
👤“Is the flight on time?”
👩🦰 The agent will respond either “Yes” if the flight is on time, or “There’s a 20-minute delay” (for example) if the flight will leave later than expected.

💎🔻 Singular or plural verb?
You use a plural verb with "the majority of," when it is followed by a plural noun:
🔹The majority of patients are women.
You use a plural verb with "the majority" on its own, when you are considering members of a group as individual people:
🔹He sees several patients a day. The majority are women.
You usually use a singular verb with majority, when considering people as a single group:
🔹The majority is unwilling to listen to the views of the minority.
☄☄ Note: In British English, you can also use a plural verb in this meaning.
💎🔻 GROUP (PLURAL VS. SINGULAR)
🔻When the group is being considered as a whole, it can be treated as a single entity:
📗“the group was ready to go on stage.”
🔻But when the individuality of its members is being emphasized, “group” is plural:
📗“the group were in disagreement about where to go for dinner.”

🍃🍃❤️❤️🍃🍃 THE MAN WHO STRUGGLES TO BE HUMAN
When Marcos Rodríguez Pantoja was seven years old, his father sold
him into slavery. Marcos was given to an elderly shepherd who lived on
a remote mountain. Marcos's new job was to take care of a herd of 300
goats. He slept under the stars and tried to ignore the worrying sounds
of wild boars and wolves. One day the shepherd disappeared and never
returned.
Left to his own devices Marcos fought to survive. He caught rabbits and
fished for trout. When a storm came, he found a shelter in a cave. Inside
the cave, he found a den of wolf pups. He didn't see the wolves as a
threat and laid down to sleep.
When the mother wolf returned, she growled at him. Marcos feared the
wolf would tear him to pieces. Instead, she gave him a piece of meat.
For the next 15 years, Marcos lived with the wolves who protected and
sheltered him. He also insists he talked to them.
In 1965, police spotted a strange man with long hair roaming the
mountains. They chased the man dressed in nothing but a deerskin.
They captured him, tied his hands, and dragged him off the hillside.
Marcos was taken to a convent in Madrid. The nuns did their best to
reintroduce Marcos to society but they had their work cut out for them.
He had lost the use of language and the human world was an alien
environment.
He was confused by his reflection in the mirror. He was terrified when
he watched a cowboy movie. He thought the cowboys would run out of
the screen and trample him. And when he first heard voices on the
radio, he thought there were people inside who were trapped and
calling for help. Civilization left a bad taste in Marcos's mouth. He
didn't feel comfortable being around humans.
In those early years, Marcos would try to run back to the mountains
whenever he could. Over the next five decades, he roamed Spain
working odd jobs. People exploited him because he was different.
Today Marcos lives in a small town. He is retired and enjoys roaming
the countryside. He still finds it hard to relate to humans. He
remembers the time living with wolves as a better and happier life.
Marcos said he communicated with the wolves by howling. Marcos
explained, "When a person talks, they might say one thing but mean
another. Animals don't do that."
Wolf behavior specialist José España thinks Marcos was tolerated by
the pack because he posed no threat. He believes Marcos was
desperate for social acceptance. He thinks Marcos imagined
relationships with wild animals that didn't exist. Whatever the truth may
be, Marcos says his time with the wolves was a glorious chapter in his
life.

🔴🟣 The German government has announced plans to allow the possession of up to 25 grams (just under 0.9 ounces) of cannabis, and the cultivation of a maximum of three plants at home.
The previous plan, which would have allowed cannabis to be sold in licensed stores nationwide, has been revised following concerns from the EU.
The legislation would allow for the commercial distribution of cannabis only under special circumstances in so-called clubs, as presented by Health Minister Karl Lauterbach and Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir.
"The previous cannabis policy has failed. Now we have to go new ways," Lauterbach said.
💎🔻 Two-step legalization
According to the revised plan, the first step will allow adults to form clubs for community cultivation with up to 500 members. Clubs can provide members up to 50 grams of cannabis per month and no more than 25 grams at once, with those under the age of 21 allowed to get a maximum of 30 grams per month of lower-potency cannabis.
The clubs must also appoint "youth protection, addiction and prevention officers." Members would be able to cultivate cannabis at home, with maximum of seven seeds or five cuttings per month allowed to be passed on by clubs. The bill for this step will be ready by the end of April, according to Özdemir.
A separate bill prepared for after the summer will allow a small number of licensed shops in certain German regions to do commercial distribution of cannabis, according to Lauterbach.
"The cannabis project is taking the next step today so that cannabis use will become legal this year," Özdemir said.
🔻💎 Why now?
The new plan comes after the German government revised its initial plans to legalize cannabis from October last year. Originally, the government planned to allow the sale of cannabis for adults in specialist shops. For now, this has been ruled out as the plan was met with concerns from the European Commission.
After holding talks with Brussels, the German government has decided that such sales will be trialed only in certain model regions.
The ministers said the legislation foresees amnesties for people who have previously been convicted of cannabis possession. They didn't specify who would be eligible for the amnesties.
