What comes first for you, the rhythm or the rhymes?It’s both. Sometimes I get a couple lines in my head, and the way they’re going, I go downstairs and make a beat to that rhythm. That’s why a lot of my drum patterns are crazy, offbeat patterns — because of the rhyme. Now more than ever I try to make my rap go right with the beat. I listen to my older shit, and I can’t stand it, because I fell behind the beat too much. Like “My Name Is” — I fucking hate that song anyways.
You wouldn’t be here without it.Yeah, I didn’t hate that song when I first made it. But the shit that I really, really like, that I put my heart and soul into, I don’t get recognized for, like “The Way I Am.” There’s a difference between me being funny and me being real. I feel like I don’t get recognized for my best shit — the shit that’s my real, true feelings and emotions.
Damn Em actually tried to shield the 9/11 shit from Halie cuz he was scared to tell her gotta salute that.

I try to keep Hailie sheltered from most of the bullshit. When September 11th happened, I didn’t tell her that morning. I just didn’t know how to explain it to her. I switched on the TV and saw the second plane hit. She was still sleeping. I got her up and took her to school, and within a couple of days she heard about it there. Those are things that I have trouble with, explaining to her all the fucked-up shit in the world. I try not to drive myself crazy with what to say if she asks me certain things. There’s a few things that are going to be tough to deal with.

Eminem has never ever been shit at rapping. Even during Revival.
I think people don’t understand the difference between rapping and making good music. ASAP Ferg is a WAY better rapper than Rocky, but Rocky makes better music. In this day and age I feel like as long as it’s catchy, has a beat you can bop to, you’ll make it in the rap game. Which is fucking absurd to me. You can’t say someone’s trash just because you can’t vibe or bop to it. That’s not how rap has been and that’s not how rap will ever be. Thoughts? And IMO the only time Eminem had shit beats was on Revival, I think if untouchable was on a smoother, wavier beat then people would’ve fucked with it MAJORLY.

Song of the Week #398: Book of Rhymes

Welcome everybody to the second SoTW of January. With Side B being released just a few weeks ago it'll probably come as no surprise to most of you that a lot of tracks from the Deluxe Edition would be featured in the weeks following the release. This week will be no exception, as 'Book of Rhymes' was selected to be featured for the next seven days.
On a track with production by common collaborator IllaDaProducer, Eminem raps about getting all his thoughts off of his mind and pad, both literally and figuratively. The song, accompanied by scratches from DJ Premier, who most notably, did work on Nas' ‘N.Y. State of Mind’ and Biggies ‘Ten Crack Commandments’. The track is the 5th off of his B-Side Deluxe cut of Music to Be Murdered By.
This song also plays off the title of the Alchemist produced ‘Book of Rhymes’ of Nas' God’s Son. There is also a likely sample of the Nas song in the DJ Premier mixing part towards the end of the song. He raps about how he still has more to give in the rap game and the effect of the internet, and how people think he has gone “off the rails”. We see hints of the old Em, with references to his ex-wife, Kim.
The song’s hook is also a direct reference to the beginning of his verse on Lil Wayne’s 'Drop The World', where he raps

On December 31, 2020 Eminem showed up on his radio station Shade 45 to finish the year and to talk about songs that are on side B:
> I’ve been wanting to do some shit with Premiere. And that was one of those things… I just had the idea of what he could scratch. And just having him scratching on the record like that’s so dope like he gets a feature credit on there, you know what I’m saying. Because Premiere is Premiere like there’s a lot of DJ’s that might not get a feature in credit. You got Premiere on your shit scratching, he’s gonna get a fucking featuring credit. The one of the best parts of the album, I want to make sure you know who I’m talking about at the end of the song. <…> I’ve always in the back of my mind like, “Man, I wish I had something with to attach”, because he’s the fucking O.G. man
About Nas' cut in the end of the track and overall scratching:
> I told him DJ Premiere the phrases that I wanted him to scratch and then I just sent him the beat and he did it. Like, I didn’t tell him how I wanted to scratch, I was just like, “I like these two phrases. If you could cut these up”. Man, he did that shit and sent it back, like, the next day and I’m so grateful for that
