TDOSS Was a Perfect Concept Album
Not sure if anyone has said this, but the concept was executed flawlessly, and the six songs after GC2 are absolutely integral to the project as a whole. I see a lot of reviewers online knocking the album because they didn't understand the point of the final six tracks/skit. In my opinion, it's very clearly him deconstructing the Slim Shady character/persona and what parts of him created it. Head Honcho is his rough upbringing and childhood; Temporary is Hailie, Bad One is his attitude, temper, ego, and also Dr. Dre; Tobey is his desire to be the best; Guess Who's Back Skit is his humor; and lastly, Somebody Save Me is his drug addiction. Bad One and Tobey are also his ability to create controversy. This all makes perfect sense from a thematic standpoint since Slim Shady is just a personification of his drug addiction. He metaphorically kills his drug addiction by shooting Slim Shady on GC2, and then literally beats it on Somebody Save Me after finally addressing the root causes of it.
As for how the songs after GC2 tie into the actual story that the album is telling, Eminem is basically just reflecting and telling us the story of his life/career. It begins with his childhood on the song Head Honcho, continues with the birth of Hailie on Temporary, then moves to his early career with Dre on Bad One, his late career on Tobey, and ends with his death on Somebody Save Me. It's clear to me at least that this section of the album is the Coup De Grace. I know crazy right, the album that has two names in the title has two distinct sections. He even says "It's the Coup De Grace" on Head Honcho, which is literally the first song after the death of slim shady on the album.
This brings me to my larger point though which is about how online critics talk about Eminem's music. Not a single one of the large, internet thought leader type reviewers like Fantano or Shawn Cee mention anything about this. Instead, they pretend like after GC2 the album doesn't make sense because that's the easy thing to say. It strengthens their preconceived notions about him as an artist, so they share these disingenuous takes to their fans online who are assuming that they know what they're talking about since they review music for a living. I don't think they do it intentionally, but I feel like these reviewers just don't give Eminem any credit as an artist. It took this man 4+ years to create this record, and for some reason, the guys who get paid online to dissect music and have massive followings can't even put in the minimal amount of legwork that is required to actually break down the concept of it. At the end of the day, you don't have to like the music, but don't try to pass it off as some low effort 4/10 shitshow after less than a week of listening to it.
Overall, this album is so layered that what I'm saying here is probably just the tip of the iceberg. Like I said, it took 4+ years to create this album and it hasn't even been out for a month yet, there's probably a lot more to the album that I've missed.
