Ancestral garb...
Outside of the "ancestral garb" that we are all only all too familiar with, ie. jeans and a shirt (ie. trousers and tunic), I've never done "ancestral garb", ie. historical garb/period dress.
That said, the tunic is a very fine looking garment that would have no problem finding a place in the modern world.
Furthermore, the idea of "sacral garb", ie. worn by the priest, not only beats the hell out of some guy standing up there dressed in a business suit, but is evidenced throughout Indo-European beliefs, including among the Germanic peoples,
The evidence for such from the Nordic Bronze Age is amply evident in the form of the twinned deposits of the age, ie. ceremonial horned helms, ceremonial swords, ceremonial aexes, lur horns; which finds itself right at home within the larger context of the greater European bronze age and the prominence of the "sun cult" and the Divine Twins over that age and throughout Europe.
On into the Roman Iron Age we have Tacitus' peculiar testimony,
"The Narhavales have a grove for an ancient rite. The presiding priest is clad in female attire".
While that bit needs to be given a closer look -- I doubt they were a cross-dressing priesthood, but who knows -- it nevertheless notes, at bare minimum a special form of garb for the priest. And one that is specifically framed within the context of the Divine Twins too boot! For whatever that's worth for our purposes here.
Earlier on, Strabo wrote,
"These priestesses (of the Cimbri) are hoary and dressed in white and wear flaxen mantles attached with broaches. Their belts are wrought with bronze and they go barefooted."
Later in the late 4th century AD, Eunapius wrote,
"He was even profaned by the Gothic impiety of wearing arm bands and neck torques. He dressed according to the Gothic custom... Such dress is definitely sacrilegious not only for a bishop, but for any Christian. It is shunned in Roman custom, except perhaps by those priests who practice the Gothic impiety."
Meanwhile, Jordanes (AD 6th century) notes that another name for the Gothic nobles, from whom "their kings and priests are drawn", was "pilleatos". meaning the "felt capped ones".
Jordanes goes on to write,
"...out strode those Gothic priests whom they call the "holy ones" to meet the ancestral gods. They were clad in white garments and carried lutes."
This is the second time we encounter the notion of white garb, which immediately calls to mind the association between divinity and the colour white, eg. Heimdal, Balder, the clay at Wyrd's Well.
While I certainly don't feel that the average worshipper has to dress up, aka "LARP" -- but probably *should* put on their Sunday best -- the handler of the sacred, at least in a larger, more public, formal ritual most definitely should be wearing something that *sets* him/her *apart* and aligns them with the sacred, ie. that which is *set apart*.
Call it LARPing if you will.
What would we call all of those *Eastern European* "larpers", who, from theoden to thrall, dress up in elder period garb? And have the good sense to maintain the integrity of their homelands and cultures?
I get asked quite a bit about what Asatru groups to join. Almost daily. So, here's a small list of kindreds and organizations in different regions that I have either met personally or vouch for.
There are more than this but these are the ones I know are comfortable dealing with the public.
East Coast:
Irminfolk Odinist Community (Irminfolk.com)
Headed by Michael Sagginario. Mike actually helps me with The Bizarchives and I've hung out with their members several times. Absolutely excellent people, very professional and family friendly. Their FSH event is my favorite. Love these guys. They offer tons of perks like a boy scouts equivalent and they print their own legal money called the Futhmark.
Texas:
Wodensfolk Kindred (WodensfolkKindred.org)
Headed by Berk Harbin. I haven't met these guys but I've had plenty of interaction with Berk and gang and have heard many excellent things about their events. They print their own literature and really go hard for their folk. They have step programs for guys in recovery and do a lot of charity outreach. Real life heathen cowboys. Great folk.
PNW
Pacific Northwest Wolf Pack
(PNWKindreds.com)
Headed by Cache McCallum. Cache is an excellent guy with a big heart. I've never met him irl but have had many great conversations with him. They're a pretty big confederation of kindreds up in the PNW. A lot of folks in my inner circle are part of them and frequent their events. They take authenticity very seriously and I've heard their events are really great.
England:
Odinist Fellowship
(OdinistFellowship.co.uk)
I've had their leader Ralph Harrison on my show and he sent me their book of rites as a gift. I have lots of British friends and several of them really love OF. One of them was even married by Ralph in their temple. Never been over there but I know Tom STJ is friendly with them. If I was in England that's where I'd go.
If you're part of the folkish community and have a channel on here, feel free to share this post so we can help our folk find an irl community. Also, if you're hosting an event please feel free to dm me. I will always and forever lift heathen voices and aid in the growth of our wonderful community.
Hail to the high holy Goðín. Hail to our glorious ancestors.
Turns out the Reich lab's detection of a Levantine signal in Yamnaya wasn't mis-modelling as I had thought previously, but the discovery of the line of Noah's son Japeth who moved to the Pontic steppe in the post diluvian period. We should now refer to PIE religions as the Japethite faiths.

Like most Neolithic graves from western Europe, it was collective meaning it contained the remains of many people.
In total there are at least 43 individuals in the grave.
In 2022, Ancient DNA was sequenced from 31 of them.
The DNA revealed nearly all individuals belonged to the same family/clan. This is no surprise. Because for many years it has been suggested that collective Neolithic graves were created for families/clans.
The Ancient DNA was sequenced by the study below…..

We shall then find that customs are corrupted in two ways: through ourselves, or through foreigners. This occurs through ourselves, indeed, due to our flying from pain, whereby we fail to endure labor, or through the pursuit of pleasure, whereby we reject the good. For labors procure good, but pleasures evil. Hence through pleasure, becoming incontinent and remiss, men are rendered effeminate in their souls, and more prodigal in their expenses. Customs and manners are corrupted through foreigners when their numbers swamp the natives, and boast of the success of their mercantile employments, or when those who dwell in the suburbs, becoming lovers of pleasures and luxury, spread their manners to the simple neighbors. Therefore the legislators, officers and mass of the people should diligently take notice whether the customs of the city are being carefully preserved, and that throughout the whole people. Moreover, they should observe whether the genuine and indigenous multitude, of which the polity consists, remains pure and unmingled with any other nation, and whether the magnitude of possessions remains in the same state, and does not become excessive. For the possession of superfluities is accompanied by the desire of still more of the superfluous. In such ways the customs should be preserved.
Hippodamus the Thurian, On a Republic
Survive the Jive in his video clip here puts forward the case that Ēostre & Freya share the same role which is why there’s no ‘Freya’ in English myth (there's reference to her necklace in Beowulf) and no Ēostre cognate in Norse. Tony Linsell in his book Anglo Saxon Runes compares Freya and Freyr with Ēostre and Ing, so makes the same argument.
All Indo-European ‘easter’ goddesses have a name which comes from the PIE h₂éwsōs ‘the dawn’, whether Ēostre, Ostara, Eos or Ushas. She is ‘born in the morning’ (perhaps relating her to Dellingr – the Dayspring god in Norse). The PIE h₂éwsōs is related to another root *h₂(e)wes ‘to shine’. Venus is this shining star - the morning star who announces days break. In English myth both Ēostre and Ēarendel are associated with the morning star. So Ēostre is further associated with the Vanir goddess Freyja as the name Venus comes from the PG *wanaz (from the PIE wenh₂) meaning ’to love’ which also gives us the words Vanir and the English Wan / Wana (Vanir).
"The melody has been handed down to posterity through a work from 1780 by the French author J. B. de la Borde: Essai sur la musique ancienne et moderne and is listed under the chapter Chansons ancienne Scandinaves, comme on les chantes encore en Islande (Ancient Scandinavian songs, as one still sings them in Iceland.) La Borde had received the melodies from the Danish-German musician Johann Ernst Hartmann, who noted them down after "the learned Icelander" Jón Ólafsson."
