Table of magical symbols in Scandinavia and their origins.
From Sacred signs, divine marks: geometric religious symbols in Viking Age Scandinavia. Medievalis 13(1), 2024
The copper bowl itself is Celtic in origin, perhaps centuries old. The circular and square motifs on the side contain typically Celtic art reminiscent of the ancient La Tene art that was no longer in use. The centre of the bowl also contained a fish which could spin around. This may have represented the salmon of wisdom from Celtic mythology.
But the bowl had been repaired - patched in one place with silver and etched with two birds (probably Woden's ravens). On the underside there is a circle of clearly Germanic knotwork from Style 2 which originates in Scandinavia. In the centre of the circle is a zoomorphic fylfot of the exact same kind found in contemporary finds from Sweden.
So the pagan English were acquiring these old, likely pagan, bowls from the Christian Britons and then modifying them with Odinic imagery so they could be used for Germanic pagan rituals. The trend spread from England to the rest of the Germanic world with 26 found in Norway, 2 in Sweden, 1 in Denmark and 4 in continental Germanic Europe.

There are dozens of tattoo ideas in here - i am referring to the zoomorphic triskeles and such rather than the geometric fylfots which I would not advise getting inked on you for obvious reasons

I think the oldest swastikas are from Vinca culture and Cucuteni Trypillia culture. I don’t count the ice age ivory example from Ukraine because it doesn’t look like one to me and also it is so far removed in time from any others.
I don’t think the later examples from Villanova, Andronovo, Greeks etc are anything to do with the Neolithic ones either
STJ's documentary rightly connects the fylfot as Woden's symbol, or at least as being Wodenic one. Folklorist and author Nigel Pennick, in the Journal of Geomancy (vol. 3 no. 4, July 1979) calls the swastika a symbol of Woden.
The image above shows the swastika on the wheels of Thor's chariot. This statue of Thor sits on top of the Ny Carlsberg beer house, who prior WW2 used the swastika as their symbol - as did many companies including Coca-Cola, the Scouts and National War Savings (UK WWI).
🚨 New Documentary 🚨
The swastika or FYLFOT was used by ancient Germanic peoples such as the Goths, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. But what did it mean? Some say it was a symbol of the sun, some think it was borrowed from the Romans. In this video I explain how the fylfot was actually connected to the cult of the god Wotan aka Odin.

A seax with a beautifully preserved carved handle was excavated in Skälby, Västerås, Sweden and was found in the remains of a settlement's well. I wonder what the story is there...
Think I'm gonna copy the design.

Judge Clinton Sternwood is introduced in Twin Peaks as a kindly, affectionate old timey American. Then he delivers this line to the man he is about to judge in a murder case:
"The law provides us structure to guide us through paralysing and trying times, but it requires our submission to its procedures and higher purposes. Before we assume our respective roles in this enduring drama, just let me say that when these frail shadows we inhabit now have quit the stage, we'll meet and raise a glass again together in Valhalla."
Shield of the Cornuti according to the Notitia Dignitatum
The Cornuti ("horned") was an auxilia palatina unit that belonged to the comitatus of Gaul, and is attested on the northern border since 355. In 357 it was led by the tribunus Bainobaudes in an attack against the Alemanni who had attacked the Roman territory and had later retired on a small island.
In that same year, the Cornuti fought the Alemanni in the Battle of Argentoratum, under the command of the Caesar Julian. When the Alamannic cavalry caused the Roman equites to flee, the Cornuti and its twin unit, the Brachiati, held the enemy horsemen until Julian rallied the Roman cavalry and brought them back in battle. Despite the Romans being victorious, Bainobaudes, the tribune of the Cornuti was killed.
Fascinating new paper looks at a British tribe, the Durotriges, and finds that they had a matrilocal system with a single local female lineage dominant, and men from Gaul being brought in and "married" into the tribe. Most Iron Age tribes in Britain were the same as their Bronze Age ancestors but some Southerners like the Durotriges mixed with men from France and this is probably how Celtic languages arrived in the British Isles.

This bronze figurine fitting was found in 1865 at Frøyhov in Norway, a place name indicating a cult of Freyr. The object dates to 160-190 AD and has an elder Futhark runic inscription which is one of the oldest ever found. It may have been fitted to a sword.
It is sometimes translated as a name, 'Inga(n)da', which features the other name of the god Freyr "Ing". Germanic *ing seems best to be etymologised as a reflex of PIE *h2neḱ-/h2nenḱ- ‘reach, attain’ and the Frøyhov form may either be a maker’s inscription or a theonym, and the figurine itself is likely to be an image of InguiFreyr
Tik tok just removed this video for being “hateful”

I was not aware of this recent paper - but it concludes, just as I did, that the swastika was related to the cult of Odin in the Viking age. It looks in more detail at some artefacts that I glossed over such as the Oseberg tapestry and others I did not.
It suggests an original solar significance of the sign in Gotland was transferred to the cult of Odin.
They refute the relationship between the swastika and Thor's hammer but assume there may be a more general relationship with the swastika and Thor.
They also incorrectly claim the swastika has an asian origin so the study is a bit flawed
A bronze escutcheon from an Anglo Saxon hanging bowl with a swastika design, found in East Hertfordshire, 7-8th Century.
Many hanging bowls feature Celtic-style decoration, and similar hanging bowls were found in Ireland, and in Viking sites in Norway. The Anglo Saxons may have enlisted Celtic craftsmen…or taken them as war trophies.
Bede’s Ecclesiastical History may reveal what they were used for;
“The king cared so much for the good of the people that, in various places where he had noticed clear springs near the highway, he caused stakes to be set up and bronze drinking bowls to be hung on them for the refreshment of travellers. No one dared to lay hands on them except for their proper purpose because they feared the king greatly nor did they wish to, because they loved him dearly.”
This could explain why so many hanging bowls were found in royal burials, including Sutton Hoo; a physical symbol of the king’s sacred hospitality. After all, stanza 4 of the Hávamál says one should give a guest water. ᛚ
For some reason Early Anglo-Saxons of the 5/6th century liked hanging bowls of Celtic manufacture. These sometimes display a Celtic art style that resembles the La Tene style from 500 years earlier. Additionally they are completely absent from the Celtic Western side of Britain (0 in cornwall/Devon, Wales) and are rare in Ireland (17) and Scotland (7) compared to Eastern England (117).
I believe these bowls were used for libation offerings, but this has not been proven. The Anglian king's burial at Sutton Hoo contained more than one Celtic hanging bowl, and one of them called bowl 2 is especially interesting because it had been recently modified with Germanic art added to it in the 6/7th century.

It is important for archaeologists and Heathens to focus on the Germanic fylfot in isolation in order to understand its cultural meaning within a Heathen context

For this Yule season we present to you the harrowing Bergbúa þáttr (Tale of the Mountain Dweller). A 13th century account of two men and their encounter with a jötunn in Iceland. The being recites to these men a poem which some scholars say may be a warning of the impending disaster Ragnarök.

This petition is worth signing for the preservation and continuation of European culture and history.
The Norrbotniabanan railway is planned to be built, and archaeological sites along the route have been examined. A 3,500-year-old burial cairn may now be removed to make way for the railway.
This petition will be sent to the Västerbotten County Administrative Board and the Swedish Transport Administration in the hope of stopping this desecration of our shared cultural heritage.
There are clear allegories in our attested Germanic myths, and possibly the best example of this is a self-consciously allegorical myth of Thunder [Þórr], particularly his visit to the etten Outyards-Lock [Útgarða-Loki] which is narrated in prose in the Gylfaginning, in the Prose Edda of Snorri Sturluson. Let us briefly summarize its contents:
Thunder, Lock [Loki] and Thelf [Þjálfi], Thunder's servant, travel to the Ettenland. There, they encounter the Outyards-Lock, who challenges them to a series of contests. Lock enters a food-eating contest against an etten but loses because the opponent not only eats the food but also the table and bones alike. Likewise, Thelf, who is very swift, goes into a racing contest but couldn't win, because his opponent was too fast. Thunder faces three challenges: drinking from a horn he cannot empty, lifting a cat he cannot raise fully, and wrestling an old woman who easily overpowers him. What's the catch? The mythic narrative ends with Outyards-Lock explaining to Thunder the reality of the challenges that were faced:
In that food-eating contest Lock lost to Lowe [Logi], whose name means "Flame."
When Thelf couldn't outrun High [Hugi], it was because nothing is swifter than "Thought," which is the meaning of High's name.
When Thunder couldn't drink the horn, it was because the horn was connected to the entire ocean, and what Thunder managed to drink lowered the sea level. The cat wasn't a cat, it was the Middenyard serpent, and Thunder managed to lift one of its paws which frightened everyone. And the old woman was Eld [Elli] herself, whose name means "Old Age," whom no one can defeat.
This myth can justifiably be called self-consciously allegorical because at the end of the narrative all its allegorical content is revealed to the audience. It goes on to show that allegory could be employed in myths, and that it could also be their constituent part.
RIP David Lynch. See you on the other side

"The night before (my Mother's) death I had a frightening dream. I was in a dense gloomy forest...Suddenly I heard a piercing whistle that seemed to resound through the whole universe. My knees shook. Then there were crashings in the underbrush, and a gigantic wolfhound with a fearful, gaping maw burst forth. At the sight of it, the blood froze in my veins. It tore past me, and I suddenly knew: the Wild Huntsman had commanded it to carry away a human soul. I awoke in deadly terror, and the next morning I recieved the news of my Mother's passing.
....It was Wotan, the god of my Alemannic forefathers, who had gathered my mother to her ancestors - negatively to the "wild horde," but positively to the "salig lut," the blessed folk. It was the Chrisitan missionaries who made Wotan into a devil. In himself he is an important god - A Mercury or Hermes, as the Romans correctly realised, a nature spirit who returned to life again in the Merlin of the Grail legend and became, as the spiritus Mercurialis, the sought after arcanum of the alchemists."
