Óðinn Worship in Christian Sweden

-Saints, Peasants and Warriors
-The Case of Eric Clauesson
-The Case of Ragvald Odenskarl
-Norse Paganism in the Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages, Óðinn worship continued in Sweden post-conversion. The court trials of Eric Clauesson (d. 1492) and Ragvald Odenskarl (d. 1484) provide a great insight into the way Óðinn worship evolved in 15th century Sweden.

New preprint from Perretti et al has this figure for Bronze Age European complexions. The colour used to represent “dark” is darker than most Indians, all native Americans, South East Asians and Arabs. They made it as dark as people from Central Africa and South India.

You really expect people to believe 1/4 of BA Britons were as dark as that and 1/4 were as light as we are now? That kind of extreme variance in one homogeneous population on a cloudy cold North Atlantic island?

Near Lejre, Denmark A fragment from one of Scandinavia's most magnificent helmets emerged from the ground in 2024. The fragment is gold-plated and decorated with red gemstones,  and comes from the period from the end of the 7th century to the middle of the 8th century, just before the start of the Viking Age. Interesting piece showing Woden wearing a headdress similar to figures from the Sutton Hoo finds. I cannot find much information about this archaeological find (?) apart from it is said to be dated to the 6th-7th century.

Bede tells us that the second moon of the Anglo-Saxon heathen year was called Solmōnaþ meaning “Sun month”. This marks the returning power of the sun goddess known in English as Sunne and in Norse as Sól and explains the Old English word for Lent, Lencten which means “lengthening” in reference to the lengthening of the days at this time of year.
Bede wrote that Sol month was the month of flat cakes which the heathen English gave in offering to their gods - presumably to Sunne specifically. These round sun cakes became the English Christian tradition of pancake day celebrated at the start of Lent.

In this video I put forward my beliefs about Odin and Galdr. I do not think that Odin got galdra from the waters of memory via Mimmir although it is tempting to see Mimir as his unnamed uncle, rather i think he got galdra from his uncle while hanging on Yggdrasil. It is possible his uncle also gave him the runes. Runes and galdra are related in an obscure way which I explain here.

In Egils saga einhenda ok Ásmundar berserkjabana, a simple offering format is outlined in a statement by a jötunn woman who is being tormented by her sisters:

Hét ek þá á Þórr at gefa honum hafr þann, sem hann vildi velja, en hann skyldi jafna með oss systrum.

I then vow to Þórr to give him a buck of his choosing, but he should make even with us sisters.

The format is:

1) Promise to the deity
2) Dedication of an animal
3) Requested action in exchange for the animal

In the instance of this saga, this is not an explicit sacrifice by the petitioner at that moment, but like in other sagas, the long-term cultivation of an animal to give as a sacrifice to the deity at the appointed time.

This is similar in function to the dedication of Freyfaxi by Hrafnkell Freysgoði in Hrafnkels saga. In a later part of the saga, the horse is sacrificed to Freyr.

A similar event occurs in Flóamanna saga, when Þorgils Þórðarson during his tumult with the god Þórr after his conversion, realizes that one of the oxen he has aboard his ship was one he dedicated to him. He had the ox thrown overboard to propitiate Þórr, as Þórr wanted what he was owed.

Most of the time when you see people predicting the complexion, hair colour and eye colour of ancient people online, they are using Hirisplex to estimate it. But this test above makes it clear that while it is pretty accurate when it comes to eye colour, it confuses hair colour calling brown hair black and blonde hair red, and it gets skin colour wrong a lot, calling dark skin "very dark" and calling light skin "intermediate". FYI this technique was used to claim Cheddar man was "black" and that Yamnaya are "dark" - in reality the Yamnaya were no darker than Europeans are today.

NEW STJ FILM!

The rock art from the tomb of Bredarör at Kivik in Sweden is a window into the forgotten world of the Nordic Bronze Age. In this film I visited the great rock barrow with my mate The Golden One, and I interpret all the esoteric imagery, including; sun-wheels, solar crosses, war chariots, armed warriors and ritual axes and boats. With the latest archaeological data, 3D scans and new CGI animations of the art, this film gives a new perspective on a tomb which is 3400 years old!

A new paper on Goth and Suebians in Iberia. Suebian elites in Spain show almost entirely Northern European ancestry (92-95%). 14 Visigoth burial samples had greater than 80% Northwest European Ancestry (3 of which were full NW Euro). There were also 27 samples with mixed NW Euro and Iberian ancestry. Dates from 4-6th century.

The Germanics did not leave a genetic legacy in Iberia though

Happy Solmōnaþ!
(Sol-Month)

The name was recorded by the Christian Anglo-Saxon scholar Bede in his treatise De temporum ratione (The Reckoning of Time), saying that "Sol-Monath can be said to be the month of cakes, which were offered to their Gods"

In Old English, “Sol” is mostly used to refer to soil or mud. Implying that this month is sacred to the Earth-Mother Goddess.
However, this could only be one of the meanings of the word in this context. “Sol” is also believed to mean “cake” and can perhaps be linked to the English custom known as souling. In this tradition one would go house to house and sing songs where the guests would be gifted “soul cakes” in exchange for prayers. This tradition is usually credited to be Christian, but as with most Christian traditions, this one may indeed be Pagan.

So be sure to give an offering of cakes to the Earth-Mother.

“Throughout my 30 years of working with the runes, they have taken on various aspects depending on who I was and what I was doing at the time. The best way I can try to explain them is almost as their own organisms that live symbiotically with the individual who has chosen to “take them up.”

Advisors, sages, teachers - but also sometimes potent forces of upheaval and reorganization, acting almost like a powerful hallucinogen can, to forcibly show a different perspective that may at first feel completely foreign or uncomfortable.

At other times, they seem to be like trees planted on the estate. They grow, spread root and leaf widely, and spring from small seeds, become saplings, and eventually, mighty giants that we have grown alongside and know by name and appearance, as well as the countless layers of experience we have with them.

Like the rings of a tree, the rune is a series of many circles, concentric, expanding, leading us wider and wider and then back in to the heart. They are repositories of deep, hidden information, as well as storage vessels of things that we do not wish to forget…”

From my upcoming program “Hamingja: A Runic Program of Life Reform.”

According to the recently published paper from the Harvard lab on the origins of the Indo-European languages, the roots of the Yamnaya culture is hypothesized to come out of the Mikhaylovka culture. This group which forms a bridge from Sredny Stog to Core Yamnaya, expand from Ukraine.

According to one of the paper’s authors, Losif Lazaridis, he had the following to say on his twitter account.

The Yamnaya, proximal scions of the Serednii Stih archaeological culture that preceded them in the Eneolithic North Pontic region, and more distally composed of a mix of CLV newcomers and Dnipro-Don hunter-gatherers, largely eclipsed the previous inhabitants of the steppe. 4/

The Yamnaya's precursors were formed by admixture ca. 4000BCE and experienced an interlude of relative isolation before the emergence of the Yamnaya horizon ca. 3300BCE. Our best guess of where this happened is in the vicinity of Mykhailivka in the Lower Dnipro in Ukraine. 5/
