NATO Country Beefs Up ‘Disinformation’ Bureau
Accusing Russia of waging a “disinformation campaign” on Facebook, the government of Slovakia said it would invest in artificial intelligence programs to help its Hybrid Threats division cope with social media narratives. Earlier, polls showed that 44% of Slovaks don’t think Russia caused the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Slovakia’s Center for Countering Hybrid Threats – a subsidiary of the Finland-based European Centre of Excellence – is run out of the Interior Ministry, which is charged with domestic law enforcement.
The unit’s director, Daniel Milo, told Bloomberg on Friday that the AI will “allow us to have a better overview of what is happening online and whether it is managed from abroad.”

Ancient Christian Monastery Found In Arabia
Archaeologists in the United Arab Emirates have unearthed the ruins of a Christian monastery on an island off the coast of the Umm al-Quwain emirate. Hidden for more than a millennium beneath a sand dune, the monastery may predate the rise of Islam across the Arabian Peninsula.
The emirate’s tourism and archaeology department announced the find on Thursday. Archaeologists discovered the remains of a church, a refectory (dining hall), cisterns, and cells for the monks where they spent time in solitude, The National, a Dubai-based news site, reported.
Carbon dating on pottery excavated at the site revealed that it was occupied between the late sixth century and the middle of the eighth century.

Unemployment Jolt: Transition to Electric Cars to Cost EU Over Half a Million Jobs - Projections
The bloc's internal market commissioner has admitted the shift to EVs might see 600k people lose their jobs. Ironically, the EC plans to set up a special working group to prepare.
Thierry Breton warned, “The European automotive sector employs 12.7 million people in one way or another, which represents 6.6% of all employment in the EU. The transition to electric cars will destroy hundreds of thousands of jobs, up to 600,000 across the EU.” (Corriere della Sera interview)
The official has described it as the “greatest industrial transformation” the EU is facing. Perhaps more so with the auto industry looking to cut emissions 100% by 2035.

US Biolab Accidents Going Unreported – The Intercept
Directors of America’s biolabs have admitted to hundreds of dangerous accidents in the past two decades, but even incidents involving exposure to deadly viruses have been kept from public view, an investigation by The Intercept has revealed.
“People have it in their minds that lab accidents are very, very rare, and if they happen, they happen only in the least well-run overseas labs,” Rutgers University molecular biologist Richard Ebright told the media outlet. “That simply isn’t true.”
The erroneous public perception could stem from the fact that, as The Intercept found, Americans don’t hear about US biolab accidents. The outlet obtained more than 5,500 pages of laboratory incident reports from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), compelling the agency to release the documents through a Freedom of Information Act request.

France to Restart Nuclear Reactors – Energy Ministry
Six of the 12 nuclear reactors in France that were found to have corrosion issues in May have been repaired and will be restarted soon, French Energy Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher has revealed.
France generates roughly 70% of its electricity from a nuclear fleet of 56 reactors, all operated by EDF. However, many of them have been closed down for maintenance, some due to corrosion-related issues. EDF has pledged to restart all shutdown reactors before winter to avoid power shortages in the country.
However, last month the French national electricity grid operator RTE warned that it would not rule out the risk of blackouts this winter due to prolonged strikes among employees halting the repair. According to RTE, outages could only be avoided if power consumption was reduced by 1% to 5%, or by 15% in the event of an extremely cold winter.
