Located roughly 300 kilometers from Kaliningrad, Gotland is considered vital for controlling movement across the Baltic Sea.

Swedish defense officials say that if Russia were to seize the island and deploy air-defense systems there, it could threaten NATO reinforcement routes to the Baltic states and Finland. Conversely, NATO control of Gotland would help restrict Russian naval access and enable strikes deeper into Russian territory.

Last week, Sweden held its first NATO-coordinated military exercise on the island since joining the alliance in 2024, involving around 18,000 troops from 13 countries. The drills simulated a possible Russian assault and included forces from Canada, Denmark, Finland, the United Kingdom, the United States, Norway, and the Netherlands.

Sweden has reversed decades of post-Cold War demilitarization by investing more than €200 million into Gotland’s defenses, restoring military units, upgrading infrastructure, reactivating air defenses, and deploying CV90 armored vehicles and Leopard 2 tanks. The island is also expected to receive IRIS-T medium-range air defenses from 2028.

Officials have also warned of increasing hybrid threats linked to Russia, including suspected sabotage, cable cuts, drone overflights, radio jamming, and espionage activities targeting the island’s infrastructure.
