(radiallah anhum) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
((صوم شهر الصبر، وثلاثة أيام من كل شهر: يُذْهِبنَ وَحَرَ الصَّدرِ))
((Fasting the month of patience and three days of each month removes the impurities of the heart”)) ([9]).

*13- Fasting Ramadaan is a means of expiation for the sins committed since the previous Ramadaan*

Abu Hurayrah (radiallah anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said:
((الصلوات الخمس، والجمعة إلى الجمعة، ورمضان مكفرات ما بينهنَّ إذا اجتُنبت الكبائر))
((The five daily (prescribed) Salaat, and Friday (prayer) to the next Friday (prayer), and the fasting of Ramadan to the next Ramadan, is expiation of the sins committed in between them, so long as major sins are avoided.)) ([10])

*14- Spending its nights in prayer out of faith and in the hope of reward is a means of forgiveness of sins*

As it is narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
((من قام رمضان إيمانا واحتسابا غفر له ما تقدم من ذنبه))
((Whoever spends the nights of Ramadaan in prayer out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven)) ([11])

*15- The month of Ramadaan is the best of times to have the sins forgiven, and the one who would not have his sins forgiven, is humiliated*

Abu Hurayrah (radiallah anhu) narrates that the Prophet (ﷺ) said while ascending the Minbar, thrice ((Ameen, Ameen, Ameen)) so it was asked: O Messenger of Allaah, what did you do here? He replied:
((Jibreel – peace be upon him – said to me: “May he be humiliated upon whom Ramadaan enters and then passes, and he does not have his sins forgiven” To this, I said: “Ameen”. Then he said: “May the one before whom your name is mentioned and he does not send salaat upon you, be humiliated.” I said: “Ameen”. Then he said: “May the slave who got the opportunity to live with his parents or one of them and still does not make it to Jannah (by taking care of them) be humiliated.” So I said: “Ameen”)) ([12])

*16- Having caught the month of Ramadaan and doing Ibaadah in it is a means of elevation of darajaat (rank)*

Talhah bin Ubaydullah (radiallah anhu) said that two men from Bali came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). They had become Muslim together, but one of them used to strive harder than the other. The one who used to strive harder went out to fight and was martyred. The other one stayed for a year longer, then he passed away. Talhah said:
“I saw in a dream that I was at the gate of Paradise and I saw them (those two men). Someone came out of Paradise and admitted the one who had died last, then he came out and admitted the one who had been martyred. Then he came back to me and said: ‘Go back, for your time has not yet come.’” The next morning, Talhah told the people of that and they were amazed. News of that reached the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and they told him the story. He said: ((Why are you so amazed at that?)) They said: “O Messenger of Allah, the first one was the one who strove harder, then he was martyred, but the other one was admitted to Paradise before him. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ((Did he not stay behind for a year?)) They said: “Yes.” He said: ((And did not Ramadan come and he fasted, and he offered such and such prayers during that year?)) They said: “Yes.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ((The difference between them is greater than the difference between heaven and earth)) ([13])

*17- ‘Umrah in Ramadaan is equivalent to Hajj*

It narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas said: The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said to a woman among the Ansaar, ((What kept you from doing Hajj with us?)) She said, “We only had two camels that we used for bringing water.” So her husband and son had gone for Hajj on one camel, and he left the other for them to use for bringing water.” He said, ((When Ramadaan comes, go for ‘Umrah, for ‘Umrah in Ramadaan is equivalent to Hajj)). According to a report narrated by Muslim, ((… is equivalent to doing Hajj with me)) ([14]).

*18- One who fasts the month of Ramadaan is among the Siddeeqeen (Truthful) and the Shuhada (Martyrs)*

Amr bin Murrah al-Juhani (radiallah anhu) narrates that a man from Quda’ah ca

*Daily Fiqh of Ramadaan – 3/30 The Great Benefits & Wisdoms of Fasting*
==========================
Imaam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (rahimahullah) said:
“The objective behind fasting is to restrain the soul from (its) desires and to prevent it from those things, which are beloved to it. And its purpose is to control the soul’s strength, so that it can be prepared to attain what is found in it (the fast) from success and joy for the soul. Through the fast, one curbs his hunger and thirst and is reminded of the condition of the hungry stomachs of needy people.
Through fasting, one narrows the passages the Devil has inside the servant (of Allaah) by narrowing the passages of food and drink. Also, it prevents the forces of the limbs from getting too accustomed to things that are harmful to it in this world and the hereafter. And each of the soul’s body limbs and energies can cease their rebelliousness (to Allaah) and be harnessed by its bridle.
So therefore, the fast is the bridle of those who fear and obey Allaah and the shield of those who wage war (against desires). And it is a garden for the righteous and devoted servants of Allaah. And it is for the Lord of the worlds, over all other actions (done to please Allaah). This is since the person who fasts, in fact does nothing. He only abandons his desire and his food for the sake of the One whom he worships.
So fasting is an abandonment of those things that the soul loves and desires, preferring instead Allaah’s love and contentment. And it is a secret kept between the servant and his Lord – no one else is aware of it.
Fasting has an amazing effect in preserving one’s outer limbs and inner capacities as well as protecting the soul from being overtaken by destructive components, which can ruin and destroy it. And it has a remarkable effect in causing all the harmful things that prevent the soul from being healthy to be emptied out. So fasting guards and protects the health of the person’s heart and body limbs. And it returns the soul all that the hands of the desires has taken from it. So it is from the greatest ways of improving one’s Taqwaa, as Allaah says: “O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you in order that you attain Taqwaa.” [Surah Al-Baqarah: 185]
The Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) said: “Fasting is a shield.” And he commanded those who had intense desires for marriage but were not able to marry, to observe fasting, making it a shield against those desires (of marriage).
When the benefits of fasting are born witness to by sensible minds and upright intuitions, one will come to realize that Allaah prescribed it as a mercy for mankind, goodness to them and a protection and shield for them.” End Quote ([1])

Hence Fasting has the following great benefits & wisdoms:

*1- Fasting is a means of Taqwa*
Because when a soul surrenders itself to give up what is Halaal from the foods, seeking the pleasure of Allaah and fearing His painful wrath, then it is even more likely to refrain from what is Haraam. That is why, Fasting is a means of God-consciousness (Taqwa), due to the saying of Allaah:
{يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُون}
{ O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous} ([2])

And this is why the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
((من لم يدع قول الزور والعمل به، والجهل فليس لله حاجة أن يدع طعامه وشرابه))
((Whoever does not give up false statements (i.e. telling lies), and evil deeds, and speaking bad words to others, Allaah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink.)) ([3])

*2- Fasting is a means that makes us appreciate and give thanks for pleasures*
For fasting means giving up eating, drinking and intercourse, which are among the greatest pleasures. By giving them up for a short time, we begin to appreciate their value. Because the blessings of Allaah are not recognized, but when you abstain from them, you begin to recognize them, so this motivates you

Due to the saying of Allaah:
{لاَ يُؤَاخِذُكُمُ الله ِباللَّغْوِ فِي أَيْمَانِكُمْ وَلَكِن يُؤَاخِذُكُم بِمَا عَقَّدتُّمُ الأَيْمَانَ فَكَفَّارَتُهُ إِطْعَامُ عَشَرَةِ مَسَاكِينَ مِنْ أَوْسَطِ مَا تُطْعِمُونَ أَهْلِيكُمْ أَوْ كِسْوَتُهُمْ أَوْ تَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ فَمَن لَّمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ ثَلاَثَةِ أَيَّامٍ ذَلِكَ كَفَّارَةُ أَيْمَانِكُمْ إِذَا حَلَفْتُمْ وَاحْفَظُواْ أَيْمَانَكُمْ}
{Allaah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] - then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths. } ([23])

e) Expiation for killing game in Ihraam
Allaah says:
{يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ لاَ تَقْتُلُواْ الصَّيْدَ وَأَنتُمْ حُرُمٌ وَمَن قَتَلَهُ مِنكُم مُّتَعَمِّدًا فَجَزَاء مِّثْلُ مَا قَتَلَ مِنَ النَّعَمِ يَحْكُمُ بِهِ ذَوَا عَدْلٍ مِّنكُمْ هَدْيًا بَالِغَ الْكَعْبَةِ أَوْ كَفَّارَةٌ طَعَامُ مَسَاكِينَ أَو عَدْلُ ذَلِكَ صِيَامًا لِّيَذُوقَ وَبَالَ أَمْرِهِ عَفَا الله عَمَّا سَلَف وَمَنْ عَادَ فَيَنتَقِمُ الله مِنْهُ والله عَزِيزٌ ذُو انْتِقَام}
{O you who have believed, do not kill game while you are in the state of ihram. And whoever of you kills it intentionally - the penalty is an equivalent from sacrificial animals to what he killed, as judged by two just men among you as an offering [to Allaah] delivered to the Ka'bah, or an expiation: the feeding of needy people or the equivalent of that in fasting, that he may taste the consequence of his deed. Allah has pardoned what is past; but whoever returns [to violation], then Allah will take retribution from him. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Owner of Retribution.} ([24])

f) Expiation for Dhihaar:
Allaah says:
{وَالَّذِينَ يُظَاهِرُونَ مِن نِّسَائِهِمْ ثُمَّ يَعُودُونَ لِمَا قَالُوا فَتَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ مِّن قَبْلِ أَن يَتَمَاسَّا ذَلِكُمْ تُوعَظُونَ بِهِ وَالله بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِير * فَمَن لَّمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يَتَمَاسَّا فَمَن لَّمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَإِطْعَامُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا ذَلِكَ لِتُؤْمِنُوا بِالله وَرَسُولِهِ وَتِلْكَ حُدُودُ الله وَلِلْكَافِرِينَ عَذَابٌ أَلِيم}
{And those who pronounce dhihaar from their wives and then [wish to] go back on what they said - then [there must be] the freeing of a slave before they touch one another. That is what you are admonished thereby; and Allah is Acquainted with what you do. And he who does not find [a slave] - then a fast for two months consecutively before they touch one another; and he who is unable - then the feeding of sixty poor persons. That is for you to believe [completely] in Allah and His Messenger; and those are the limits [set by] Allah. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.} ([25])

g) Expiation for sexual relation during the day in the month of Ramadaan
Due to the hadeeth narrated by Abu Hurayrah (radiallah anhu):
((A man came to the Prophets and said, "I am ruined!" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "What is the matter with you?" He said, "I have done a sexual relation with my wife (while fasting) in Ramadan" The Prophet (ﷺ) said to him, "Can you afford to manumit a slave?" He said, "No." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Can you fast for two successive months?" He said, "No." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Can you feed sixty poor persons?" He said, "I have nothing." Later on an Irq (big basket) containing dates was given to the Prophet, and the Prophet (ﷺ) said (to him), "Take this basket and give it in charity." The man said, "To poorer people than we? Indeed, there is nobody between its (i.e., Medina's) two mountains who is poorer than we." The Prophet then said, "Take it and feed your family with it.")) ([26])

so he said:
((Take to fasting, for there is nothing like it)) ([9])
In another wording, Abu Umaamah asked: “Which is the best act to do?” So he said:
((Take to fasting for there is nothing equal to it)) ([10])

10- Fasting will make one enter Jannah through the Door of Rayyaan

Sahl bin Sa’d (radiallah anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said:
((إن في الجنة باباً يُقالُ له: الريَّان، يدخل منه الصائمون يوم القيامة، لا يدخل منه أحد غيرهم، يقال: أين الصائمون؛ فيقومون لا يدخل منه أحد غيرُهم، فإذا دخل آخرهم أُغلق فلم يدخل منه أحد))
((Indeed in the Jannah there is a door called: Ar-Rayyaan. No one shall pass through it other than those who used to fast habitually. It will be said: ‘Where are the Saa’imoon (Fasting ones)’? So they will stand and no one will be able to enter through it other than them. So when the last one of them has entered, the door will close and no one will ever pass through it again.)) ([11]).

11- Fasting is among the first of the characteristics that make one enter Jannah

Abu Hurayrah (radiallah anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) once said: ((“Who among you observed fast this morning?” Abu Bakr (radiallah anhu) said: I did.
He said: “Who among you attended a funeral today?” Abu Bakr said: “I did”.
He said: “Who among you fed a poor today?” Abu Bakr said: “I did”.
He said: “Who among you visited a sick today?” Abu Bakr said: “I did”.
Thereupon, Allaah’s Apostle (ﷺ) said: “Anyone in whom (these good deeds) are combined will certainly enter paradise.”)) ([12])

12- Fasting is an expiation for the sins

Huzayfah (radiallah anhu) narrates that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
((فتنة الرجل في أهله، وماله، وولده، وجاره، تكفِّرها: الصلاة، والصوم، والصدقة، والأمر، والنهي))
((The afflictions caused for a man by his wife, money, children and neighbor are expiated by his prayers, fasting, charity and by enjoining (what is good) and forbidding (what is evil))) ([13])

13- The Reward of those who fast is beyond imagination

14- The one who fasts has two pleasures: One in this world and the other in the hereafter

15- The unpleasant smell from the mouth of a fasting person is better than the smell of musk near Allaah

The following hadeeth is a proof for these three virtues. Abu Hurayrah (radiallah anhu) said that the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said:
((Allah said, 'All the deeds of Adam's sons (people) are for them, except fasting which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it.' Fasting is a shield or protection from the fire and from committing sins. If one of you is fasting, he should avoid sexual relation with his wife and quarreling, and if somebody should fight or quarrel with him, he should say, 'I am fasting.' By Him in Whose Hands my soul is' The unpleasant smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. There are two pleasures for the fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord; then he will be pleased because of his fasting.)) ([14])

16- The Fast and the Qur’aan both will intercede on behalf of the person on the Day of Resurrection

Abdullah bin Amr (radiallah anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said:
((الصيامُ والقرآن يشفعان للعبد يوم القيامة، يقول الصيام: أي ربِّ منعته الطعام والشهوات بالنهار، فشفعني فيه، ويقول القرآن: منعته النوم بالليل فشفعني فيه قال: فيشفعان))
((Siyaam and the Qur’aan will both intercede for the slave of Allaah on the Day of Resurrection. The Siyaam will say: ‘Lord, I kept him from food and desires during the day, so accept my intercession for him’. And the Qur’aan will say: ‘I kept him from sleep during the night, so I accept my intercession for

Daily Fiqh of Ramadaan – 1/30
Linguistic and Legislative Meaning of Siyaam (Fasting)

Linguistically Siyaam (صيام), plural of Sawm (صوم), means: To abstain. It is said: (صام عن الكلام) i.e. He abstained from speaking or he remained silent. Likewise, (صام عن النكاح) i.e. He abstained from marriage. And (صام الماء) i.e. the water became still or motionless. And (صامت الريح) i.e. The wind became still.
Allaah (swt) informs in the Qur’aan about Maryam (peace be upon her), saying:
{إِنِّي نَذَرْتُ لِلرَّحْمَنِ صَوْمًا}
“Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention” [Maryam: 26]
Meaning, to remain silent, as it is an abstention from speaking. And this is explained by the saying of Allaah:
{فَلَنْ أُكَلِّمَ الْيَوْمَ إِنسِيًّا}
“so I will not speak today to [any] man” [Ibid]

Legislative or Shar’ee meaning of as-Sawm:
It is said that: ((Sawm is an abstention of a specific type. It is to abstain from food, drink, and sexual intercourse from sunrise to sunset with this intention.)) (1)
And it is said: (( It is to abstain from certain things at a certain time. )) (2)
And it is said: (( It is a certain type of abstention at a certain time in a certain condition. )) (3)
And so on.

The Best definition of Siyaam:
Is to say: (( It is a worship of Allaah by way of abstaining, with an intention, from food, drink, and all of the other invalidators of fast explained in the sharee’ah, from the time of true dawn [Al-Fajr as-Saadiq] to the setting of the sun, by a certain individual with certain conditions. )) (4)

Siyaam (Fasting) is also called Sabr (Patience) due to the hadeeth in which Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Fasting the month of patience and three days of each month removes the impurities of the heart” (5).

And it is said that this is what’s referred to in the saying of Allaah:
{وَاسْتَعِينُواْ بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلاَةِ}
“And seek help through patience (i.e. fasting) and prayer”
That is because a fasting person keeps his nafs patient from its desires. (6)
And it is also called: Siyaahah (a journey of abstinence) (7).

me to the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) and said: “O Messenger of Allaah, if I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah and that you are the Messenger of Allaah, pray the five prayers, give the Zakaah, and observe the fasts of Ramadaan and do Qiyaam in it, then among whom will I be?” He replied:
((From the Truthful and the Martyrs)) ([15])

*19- The month of Ramadaan is the month of Salaat ut-Taraaweeh*

For Salaat ut-Taraaweeh is not prayed in congregation except in Ramadaan, due to the hadeeth of Aa’ishah (radiallah anha) in which the Prophet (ﷺ) led the people in prayer for three nights in Ramadaan ([16]).

*20- Whoever prays Salaat ut-Taraaweeh in Ramadaan with the Imaam until he finishes, it will be recorded for him that he spent the whole night in prayer*

Because of the report of Abu Dharr (radiallah anhu) that the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said:
((إنه من قام مع الإمام حتى ينصرف كتب له قيام ليلة))
((Whoever prays qiyaam with the imam until he finishes, it will be recorded for him that he spent the whole night in prayer)) ([17])

*21- Fasting in Ramadaan is equivalent to fasting ten months*

Abu Ayyoob al-Ansaari narrates that the Prophet (ﷺ):
((Whoever fasts Ramadaan then follows it with six days of Shawwaal, it will be like fasting for a lifetime)) ([18])
Ahmad (21906) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ((Whoever fasts Ramadaan, a month is like ten months, and fasting six days after al-Fitr will complete the year)).

*22- Prophet of Allaah (ﷺ) used to increase in generosity in the blessed month of Ramadaan*
*23- The Month of Ramadaan is the month of studying the Qur’aan*

These two characteristics are indicated by the hadeeth in which Ibn ‘Abbaas (radiallah anhu) said:
((The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) was the most generous of people, and he was most generous in Ramadan when Jibreel met him. Jibreel use to meet him every night during the month of Ramadan and study Quran with him." And he said: "When Jibreel met him, the Messenger of Allah was more generous in doing good than the blowing wind.)) ([19])

*24- Fasting the month of Ramadaan is the fourth pillar of Islaam, and a person’s Eemaan is not complete without it*

Abdullah bin Umar (radiallah anhuma) said that the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said:
((بُني الإسلامُ على خمس: شهادة أن لا إله إلا الله وأن محمداً رسول الله، وإقام الصلاة، وإيتاء الزكاة، وصوم رمضان، وحج البيت))
((Islaam is built on five (pillars): Testifying that there is no god but Allaah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah, establishing the Prayer, giving the Zakaah, fasting the month of Ramadaan, and doing Hajj of the House (Ka’bah))) ([20])

*25- The month of Ramadaan is the month of observing the I’tikaaf (retreat for the purpose of worship)*

It was narrated in the hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah (radiallah anha) that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to spend the last ten days of Ramadaan in i’tikaaf until he passed away, then his wives observed i’tikaaf after him” ([21]).

*26- The month of Ramadaan is the month of striving in worship*

It is narrated that Aa’ishah (radiallah anha) said: ((The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) used to strive hard in the last ten days of Ramadaan then he would do in any other time)) ([22])
And Aa’ishah also said:
((كان رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - إذا دخل العشر أحيى الليل، وأيقظ أهله، وجدَّ، وشد المئزر))
((With the start of the last ten days of Ramadan, Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would pray all the night, and would keep his family awake for the prayers. He tied his lower garment (i.e., avoided sleeping with his wives) and devoted himself entirely to prayer and supplication)) ([23])

*27- Breaking the fast during the day of Ramadaan without an excuse is not like breaking it in any other month*

It is narrated from Abu Umaamah Al-Bahili (radiallah anhu) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say:
((While I was sleeping two men approached me (in a dream) and took me from my underarm to a bumpy mountain then they said “climb” I replied “it’s hard to climb” they said “we will make it easy for you”. Then I climbed until I approa

*Daily Fiqh of Ramadaan – 4/30 Virtues & Characteristics of the month of Ramadaan*
=====================================

The month of Ramadaan has great virtues and characteristics, which are as follows:

*1- Allaah revealed the Qur’aan in this month*

He (swt) says:
{شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِيَ أُنزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ هُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَاتٍ مِّنَ الْهُدَى وَالْفُرْقَانِ}
{The month of Ramadan (is one) in which was revealed the Qur’aan, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong)} ([1])
And Allaah has praised this month over all other months, as He chose it among the others to reveal the qur’aan in ([2]). And it was revealed in Laylat ul-Qadr (The Night of Decree) in the last ten days of Ramadaan, as He (swt) says:
{إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْر}
{Verily, We have sent it (this Qur’aan) down in the Night of Al-Qadr (Decree).} ([3])
And He said:
{إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةٍ مُّبَارَكَةٍ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُنذِرِين}
{Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]} ([4])

*2- The gates of Paradise are opened in this month*

*3- The gates of Hell are closed in this month*

*4- The Devils are chained*

*5- The doors of Mercy are opened in it*

*6- The doors of the Heaven are opened in it*

*7- In this month, a caller calls out: ‘O seeker of the good, come near’ and ‘O seeker of evil, stop’.*

*8- In this month, every night Allaah has people whom He redeems from the Fire*

These seven characteristics are denoted by the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah (radiallah anhu) from the Prophet (ﷺ) that he said:
((On the first night of the month of Ramadan, the Shayaateen are chained, the jinns are restrained, the gates of the Hellfire are closed such that no gate among them remains opened. The gates of Paradise are opened such that no gate among them remains closed, and a caller calls: ‘O seeker of the good; come near!’ and ‘O seeker of evil; stop!’ And Allaah redeems people from the Fire.' And that happens every night.)) ([5])
In a wording of Bukhaari, ((And the gates of heaven are opened)) and in a wording of Muslim ((And the gates of Rahmah (Mercy) are opened)).

*9- In the month of Ramadaan is a night which is better than a thousand months*

Abu Hurayrah (radiallah anhu) said that the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said:
((أتاكم رمضان شهر مبارك، فرض الله - عز وجل - عليكم صيامه، تفتح فيه أبواب السماء، وتغلق فيه أبواب الجحيم، وتُغلُّ فيه مردة الشياطين، لله فيه ليلة خير من ألف شهر، من حُرِم خيرَها فقد حرم))
((There has come to you Ramadan, a blessed month, which Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has enjoined you to fast. In it the gates of heavens are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and every devil is chained up. In it Allah has a night which is better than a thousand months; whoever is deprived of its goodness is indeed deprived.)) ([6])
The wording of Ahmad is, ((in it the gates of Jannah are opened)) instead of ((the gates of heaven)).

*10- In this month, the du’aas are accepted*

Abu Hurayrah or Abu Sa’eed (radiallah anhuma) narrates that the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said:
((إن لله عتقاء في كل يومٍ وليلة، لكل عبد منهم دعوةٌ مستجابة))
((Verily, Allaah has slaves freed (from the hellfire) every day and night (of Ramadaan), for each one of the slave is a du’aa that is answered)) ([7])

*11- The month of Ramadaan is the month of Remembrance (of Allaah) and gratitude*

As Allaah says:
{وَلِتُكَبِّرُواْ الله عَلَى مَا هَدَاكُمْ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُون}
{And to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful} ([8])

*12- The month of Ramadaan is the month of Patience*

Due to the hadeeth of the Beduoin Sahaabi and the hadeeth of Ibn Abbaas

to be grateful for them. An indication to this is given under the verse of Fasting where Allaah says:
{وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُون}
{And so that you may be thankful} ([4])

*3- Fasting diminishes the strength of one’s desire*
Eating to one’s fill and quenching the thirst and enjoying one’s wife all the time can lead one to heedlessness and to ingratitude. That is because when a person is full his desires grow, but if he is hungry then his desire becomes weak. That is why the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
((يا معشر الشباب من استطاع منكم الباءة فليتزوج؛ فإنه أغض للبصر، وأحصن للفرج، ومن لم يستطع فعليه بالصوم؛ فإنه له وجاء))
((O young men, those among you who can support a wife should marry, for it restrains eyes (from casting evil glances) and preserves one from immorality; but he who cannot afford It should observe fast for it is a means of controlling the sexual desire)) ([5])

*4- Fasting makes the heart focus on remembrance of Allaah and contemplation*
That is because being exposed to shahwaat (whims and desires) all the time makes one heedless, and it makes one hard-hearted and blinds him from the right path, and it comes between a slave and his remembrance & contemplation (Az-Zikr wal-Fikr), whereas, depriving the body of food and drink enlightens the heart, makes the heart tender, and gets rid of its coarseness, and gives it the space to remember Allaah and contemplate on His signs and creation ([6]).

*5- Fasting makes rich people appreciate the favors of Allah upon him*
Because Allah has granted him what He has deprived many other poor people from ([7]).

*6- Fasting helps strengthening one’s willpower and determination*
One, who can tolerate the pain of hunger and thirst and controls himself from having a sexual relation with his spouse whilst fasting, will strengthen his determination and willpower. This frees the person from being enslaved to his lusts and desires that are harmful to him.

*7- Fasting helps one breaking out of his regular routine*
Some people lose their temper and become ill-mannered if their meal was delayed from its normal time or if they do not drink their morning coffee or afternoon tea. They have become so accustomed to a certain routine that changing it creates a problem for them. Such people are slaves to their routine and habits, and fasting helps the person overcome this behavior ([8]).

*8- Fasting makes us feel compassion and empathy towards the poor*
Because when the fasting person tastes the pain of hunger for a while, he remembers those who are in this situation all the time, so he will hasten to do acts of kindness to them and show compassion towards them. So fasting is a means of feeling empathy with the poor ([9]).

*9- Fasting humiliates and weakens the Shaytaan*
Shaykh al-Islaam said in Majmoo’ al-Fataawa (25/246): Undoubtedly blood is created from food and drink, so when a person eats and drinks, the passages through which the devils flow – which is the blood – become wide. But if a person fasts, the passages through which the devils flow become narrow, so hearts are motivated to do good deeds, and to give up evil deeds ([10]).

*10- Fasting creates a global environment of worship & righteousness*
This act of worship must be practiced by the entire Muslim community in the east and the west. The entire Muslim nation fast this month, even the ones who are normally disobedient fast during Ramadaan in most cases. This increases the righteous environment which facilitates repentance to many people.

*11- Fasting makes one patient*
Fasting combines many types of patience in a person. In it is Patience on Obeying Allaah, Patience from the prohibitions of Allaah, and Patience from physical difficulties like hunger and thirst. So a fasting person is rewarded with the reward of those who are patient. Allaah says:
{إِنَّمَا يُوَفَّى الصَّابِرُونَ أَجْرَهُم بِغَيْرِ حِسَاب}
{Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account} ([11])

*12- Fasting has numerous health and medical benefits*
Fasting protects the person from many diseases with the will of Allah. Modern research proved that fast

him.’ So they both will intercede)) ([15])

17- Fasting removes the hostilities, bitter feelings, and worries from the heart

A Bedouin Sahaabi narrates that the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said:
((صوم شهر الصبر وثلاثة أيامٍ من كل شهرٍ: يذهبن وحر الصدر))
((Fasting the month of patience and three days of each month removes the impurities of the heart)) ([16])

18- Allaah has prepared lofty chambers in Jannah for those who fast regularly

Abu Maalik al-Ash’ari narrates that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
((إنَّ في الجنة غرفاً يُرى ظاهرها من باطنها، وباطنها من ظاهرها، أعدَّها الله تعالى لمن أطعم الطعام، وألان الكلام، وتابع الصيام، وأفشى السلام، وصلَّى بالليل والناس نيام))
((Indeed in Jannah there are chambers whose outside can be seen from their inside and their inside can be seen from their outside. They are prepared by Allaah for those who feed others, speak softly, fast regularly, spread the Salaam, and pray during the night while the people sleep)) ([17])

19- The Du’a of the Fasting person is not rejected when he breaks his fast.

Abu Hurayrah (radiallah anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said:
((ثلاثة لا تُردُّ دعوتهم: الإمام العادل، والصائم حتى يفطر، ودعوة المظلوم يرفعها الله فوق الغمام ويفتحُ لها أبواب السماء، ويقول الربُّ: وعزتي لأنصرنك ولو بعد حين))
((There are three whose supplication is not rejected: The fasting person when he breaks his fast, the just leader, and the supplication of the oppressed person; Allah raises it up above the clouds and opens the gates of heaven to it. And the Lord says: ‘By My might, I shall surely aid you, even if it should be after a while.’)) ([18])

20- Providing a fasting person food to break his fast has huge reward.

Zayd bin Khaalid al-Juhani (radiallah anhu) narrates that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
((من فطَّر صائماً كان له مثل أجره، غير أنه لا ينقص من أجر الصائم شيئاً))
((He who provides a fasting person something with which to break his fast, will earn the same reward as the one who was observing the fast, without diminishing in any way the reward of the latter)) ([19])

21- Due to the greatness of the reward of fasting, Allaah has made it an atonement and expiation for the following

a) Expiation for the ransom of ailment
Allaah says:
{وَلاَ تَحْلِقُواْ رُؤُوسَكُمْ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ الْهَدْيُ مَحِلَّهُ فَمَن كَانَ مِنكُم مَّرِيضاً أَوْ بِهِ أَذًى مِّن رَّأْسِهِ فَفِدْيَةٌ مِّن صِيَامٍ أَوْ صَدَقَةٍ أَوْ نُسُكٍ}
{And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal has reached its place of slaughter. And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head [making shaving necessary must offer] a ransom of fasting [three days] or charity or sacrifice.} ([20])

b) One who does not find or cannot afford a sacrificial animal during Hajj:
Allaah says:
{فَمَن تَمَتَّعَ بِالْعُمْرَةِ إِلَى الْحَجِّ فَمَا اسْتَيْسَرَ مِنَ الْهَدْيِ فَمَن لَّمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ ثَلاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ فِي الْحَجِّ وَسَبْعَةٍ إِذَا رَجَعْتُمْ تِلْكَ عَشَرَةٌ كَامِلَةٌ ذَلِكَ لِمَن لَّمْ يَكُنْ أَهْلُهُ حَاضِرِي الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ}
{So whoever performs 'umrah [during the Hajj months] followed by Hajj [offers] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And whoever cannot find [or afford such an animal] - then a fast of three days during Hajj and of seven when you have returned [home]. Those are ten complete [days]. This is for those whose family is not in the area of al-Masjid al-Haram.} ([21])

c) Expiation for killing by mistake:
Due to the saying of Allaah:
{وَإِن كَانَ مِن قَوْمٍ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُمْ مِّيثَاقٌ فَدِيَةٌ مُّسَلَّمَةٌ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ وَتَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ مُّؤْمِنَةٍ فَمَن لَّمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ تَوْبَةً مِّنَ الله وَكَانَ الله عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا}
{And if he was from a people with whom you have a treaty - then a compensation payment presented to his family and the freeing of a believing slave. And whoever does not find [one or cannot afford to buy one] - then [instead], a fast for two months consecutively, [seeking] acceptance of repentance from Allaah. And Allaah is ever Knowing and Wise.} ([22])

d) Expiation for breaking an oath:

Virtues and Characteristics of Fasting
=====================================

Fasting has the following Virtues and Characteristics:

1- Fasting is from among those acts for which Allaah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.

Proof: Allaah says:

{إِنَّ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمَاتِ وَالْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَالْقَانِتِينَ وَالْقَانِتَاتِ وَالصَّادِقِينَ وَالصَّادِقَاتِ وَالصَّابِرِينَ وَالصَّابِرَاتِ وَالْخَاشِعِينَ وَالْخَاشِعَاتِ وَالْمُتَصَدِّقِينَ وَالْمُتَصَدِّقَاتِ وَالصَّائِمِينَ وَالصَّائِمَاتِ وَالْحَافِظِينَ فُرُوجَهُمْ وَالْحَافِظَاتِ وَالذَّاكِرِينَ الله كَثِيرًا وَالذَّاكِرَاتِ أَعَدَّ الله لَهُم مَّغْفِرَةً وَأَجْرًا عَظِيمًا}
{ Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.} ([1])

2- Fasting is the best for Muslims if they knew

3- Fasting is a cause among the causes of Righteousness

Proof: Allaah says:
{يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُون}
{O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous} ([3])

4- Fasting is a shield that the Muslim slave of Allaah uses to shield himself from hellfire

Proof: Jaabir (radiallah anhu) narrates the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said:
((قال ربنا - عز وجل -: الصيامُ جنةٌ يستجنُّ بها العبدُ من النار وهو لي وأنا أجزي به))
((Our Lord – the mighty and sublime – has said: “Fasting is a shield that a slave of Allaah uses to shield himself from the fire; and it is for me and I will give the reward for it.”)) ([4])

((The one fasts for one day in the way of Allaah, Allaah will keep his face away from the hellfire for (a distance covered by a journey of) seventy years.)) ([7])

8- Fasting one day for the sake of Allaah, will keep one away from the hellfire as much as the distance between the heaven and the earth

Proof: Abu Umaamah al-Baahili (radiallah anhu) narrates that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
((من صامَ يوماً في سبيل الله جعل الله بينه وبين النار خندقاً كما بين السماء والأرض))
((He who observes Saum (fasting) for a day in the Cause of Allah, Allah will keep his face from Hell-fire at a distance equivalent to that between heaven and the earth.)) ([8])

9- Fasting is a Wasiyyah (will/advice) of the Prophet (ﷺ) and there is nothing similar to it nor equal to it
