Due to the recent developments with Telegram, we're going to start promoting our XMPP group more - which has been around for more than a year and has had hundreds of users come through it. XMPP is a messaging protocol developed in the 90s, has previously scaled to millions of users, is free and decentralized, and offers excellent messaging and privacy features including end to end encrypted messaging, calls, and video calls.
We've bridged our Telegram group (@takebackourtech_chat) to our XMPP group (tbot@group.chat.above.im) - this means you'll see messages come through from one group to another using bots.
We invite those of you that want to test out XMPP to do the following:
1. Sign up for a public XMPP server: https://list.jabber.at/
2. Note your JID (Jabber ID) - which will look like an email
3. Download your XMPP client (Gajim for Linux Desktop, Cheogram or Conversations for Android Mobile)
4. Sign in using your JID & Password
5. Join the following room: tbot@group.chat.above.im

BREAKING: Pagers Explode Across Lebanon in Israeli Attack Against Hezbollah w/ Elijah J. Magnier
At least nine people were killed, and nearly 3,000 wounded, according to the latest reports, after pagers that were used by Hezbollah members exploded across Lebanon on Tuesday.
Lebanon's information minister said the government condemned the attack as an act of “Israeli aggression,” and Hezbollah blamed Israel, and said it would receive “its fair punishment.”
Veteran Journalist Elijah J. Magnier noted that the affected pagers appear to be from a shipment that Hezbollah received recently that had gone through multiple checkpoints in multiple countries before reaching their destination—an indicator that Israel planned this attack in advance, and then waited for the time to inflict terror on the people of Lebanon.

⚡️Telegram Plays Ball and Commits To Moderation

Last week on Telegram, chats were ablaze with rumors that direct messaging on the platform lost its encryption, after CEO Pavel Durov posted bail from a French jail and Telegram made a quiet update to their FAQ.
What’s the impact of this? The door is now open to Telegram handing over message data related to specific accounts, groups, or message based on requests from authorities.
Telegram’s latest official post indicates that they’ll be taking moderation and these requests more seriously. And with Pavel on a no-fly list and reporting to police twice a week, these changes may be indefinite.

A leaked pitch deck from Cox Media Group (CMG)—a marketing partner who actively works with Facebook, Google, and Amazon—has brought to light the existence of "Active Listening" technology that uses artificial intelligence to capture data from real-time “private conversations” on mainstream smart phones and other microphone-enabled smart devices.
This technology claims to leverage AI to analyze voice data collected from smartphone microphones, combining it with behavioral data from over 470 sources.

Telegram Founder & CEO Charged with Wide Range of Crimes in France
Pavel Durov, the entrepreneur who founded the online communications tool Telegram, was charged on Wednesday (Aug. 28) in France with a wide range of crimes related to illicit activity on the app and barred from leaving the country.
It was a rare move by legal authorities to hold a top technology executive personally liable for the behavior of users on a major messaging platform, escalating the debate over the role of technology companies in online speech and the limits of their responsibility.
Mr. Durov, 39, who was detained by French authorities on Saturday (Aug. 24), was placed under formal investigation on a range of charges, including complicity in managing an online platform to enable illegal transactions; complicity in crimes such as enabling the distribution of child sexual abuse material, drug trafficking and fraud; and a refusal to cooperate with law enforcement.
Laure Beccuau, the Paris prosecutor, said in a statement that Durov had been ordered to pay bail of 5 million euros, or about $5.5 million, and was released but must check in at a police station twice a week.

Announcing the Independent Media Alliance:
Myself, Whitney Webb, and Ryan Cristian are organizing an alliance of independent media specifically focused on individuals who have been consistently correct and principled in their reporting on 3 core issues:
1. COVID1984
2. Israeli's assault on Palestine
3. The Two-Party Deception
We are reaching out to several people who fit this bill with the intention of forming an alliance.
Our reasoning behind this is related to concerns that already rampant social media censorship will continue to sideline critical voices of dominant narratives as well as concerns that it is important to organize to promote voices and viewpoints that focus more on directly tackling dangerous policy agendas (i.e. digital ID, CBDCs, etc.) and not on promoting branded politicians and related distractionary drama.
Some of the potential actions we are considering include:
1. A weekly/biweekly joint newsletter to highlight alliance members work relevant to exposing the agendas above, particularly over the next 2 months as we approach the U.S. election
2. Weekly or biweekly panel conversations about these topics
3. Joint investigations highlighting the co-opting of the "freedom movement" and how the U.S. election is playing a role.
We are specifically only interested in collaborating with people who were correct - from the beginning - on the above issues.
Invitations to this small alliance have already been sent and more will likely be sent.

Hold tight to your critical thinking. We are going to do our best to unite the indie media outlets and individuals who still have principles to collaborate on how we can pushback against the quickly emerging "Mainstream Alternative Media".

Public school districts across the United States, including those in New Jersey and Wisconsin, have recently implemented visitor management systems utilizing facial recognition AI. While proponents argue that these systems enhance school safety, they also represent a significant escalation of the all seeing eye of state sponsored surveillance in children's daily lives.
The Visitor Aware system, developed by Singlewire Software, collects a vast array of personal data from school visitors, including facial photos, and cross-references this information against various government watch lists.

Novel work by our team: an NFC tag system which upon tapping, returns a random number signed by a private key contained in secure storage within the NFC tag and the random number as a parameter in a URL.
What this allows: a server which holds the corresponding public key can verify a user has tapped an NFC tag and it cannot be faked.
Use cases: self-sovereign decentralised payments, proof of attendance without centralised points of failure and more.

Signal is capitalizing on the whole Telegram situation by making the rounds on tech journalism liked Wired and Gizmodo. These outlets make Signal out to be some sort of anarchist hacker startup founded in some basement. This interview she did with Gizmodo gave her a bunch of softball questions, some interesting tidbits in there though:
- it costs $40M a year to run Signal. Nobody bothers to ask where the money comes from. 🧐
- she protested against the DOD drone contract for the US military, and left her job at Google for that

“An investigating judge has ended Pavel Durov’s police custody and will have him brought to court for a first appearance and a possible indictment,” a statement from the Paris prosecutor’s office said.
Allegations against the Russia-born Durov, who is a French citizen, include that his platform is being used for child sexual abuse material and drug trafficking, fraud and abetting organized crime transactions, and that Telegram refused to share information or documents with investigators when required by law.

⚡️LocalMonero.com Shutting Down

LocalMoneros, a popular P2P exchange for converting fiat into the privacy coin Monero has shut its doors. You're unable to register or post any trades from this point forward. If you have any funds on the platform they need to be recovered before November 7th, 2024.
With all of the attention and pressure against cryptocurrency privacy platforms, it makes sense that the LocalMonero's team is limiting their exposure. Unfortunately that leaves one less tool people can use to transact with private cryptocurrencies.
I'll be digging into some of the alternatives such as Serai, BTC/XMR atomic swaps, and the FCMP mentioned in the original post.
What are your thoughts on LocalMoneros shutting down? Was it justified for them? Should they have open-sourced their code?
