The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has filed a lawsuit against the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, alleging that it illegally traded on its own platform with hundreds of accounts associated with its CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ).

The CFTC alleges that Binance used at least 300 accounts, directly or indirectly associated with CZ, to engage in illegal wash trading and market manipulation activities on the exchange between December 2017 and May 2019.

According to the complaint, these trades had the effect of artificially inflating trading volume and creating a false impression of demand for certain digital assets listed on Binance’s platform. The CFTC is seeking civil monetary penalties from Binance for its alleged violations of US commodities law.

The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has just announced it is suing Binance, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, and its CEO Changpeng Zhao for allegedly violating federal anti-money laundering regulations.

The CFTC alleges that Binance allowed US customers to trade digital assets without registering as a Futures Commission Merchant (FCM), which is required by law. Additionally,

he CFTC claims that Binance failed to implement proper anti-money laundering procedures, such as customer identification programs and suspicious activity monitoring.

The CFTC is seeking civil monetary penalties, disgorgement of ill-gotten gains, restitution for harmed customers and other relief deemed appropriate by the court. If found guilty of all charges, Binance could face millions in fines and other penalties.
