⭕️ Italy ends contract with Israeli spyware firm Paragon over surveillance allegations

Italy has terminated its contracts with Israeli spyware firm Paragon after revelations that its technology was used to spy on critics of the government, including journalists and migrant rescue activists.

A parliamentary security report confirmed that Italian intelligence agencies had activated contracts with Paragon in 2023–2024 and used the spyware on a limited number of targets with prosecutorial approval.

Among those surveilled were activists from the Mediterranea NGO, targeted not for human rights work but over alleged links to irregular immigration.

Paragon claims it cut ties with Italy after allegations of spying on journalist Francesco Cancellato became public, and said the Italian government refused to investigate the incident jointly.

Opposition parties and the journalists’ union FNSI have called for a full inquiry. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's office has not commented.

“These sanctions do not advance US-led efforts to achieve a ceasefire, bring all hostages home and end the war,” Rubio said.

⭕️ Israeli journalist Ravit Hecht wrote in Haaretz that Netanyahu is using the threat of an attack on Iran to pressure ultra-Orthodox parties not to rush into dissolving the Knesset. She noted that he has used similar tactics before—hinting at military action to stop his government from collapsing.

At the same time, Maariv reported that Avigdor Lieberman’s Israel Hayom party plans to move forward with a proposal to dissolve the Knesset, even without waiting for the Haredi parties, putting them in an uncomfortable position.

Opposition groups have started meeting to agree on submitting the proposal, which would bring down Netanyahu’s coalition. The internal tensions follow the failure to pass a law exempting ultra-Orthodox citizens from military service.

❗️Hamas kills over 50 members of Israeli-backed Gaza militia

Hamas has killed more than 50 members of an armed group in Gaza led by Yasser Abu Shabab, a clan leader accused of collaborating with Israel, according to a statement issued by the militia. The group claimed its members were “guarding aid convoys and redistributing supplies” and accused Hamas of targeting them to “maintain control over humanitarian assistance.”

The statement comes amid reports from Israeli media that the army has directly intervened to assist Abu Shabab’s group. Channel i24 said an Israeli drone strike targeted Hamas fighters clashing with the militia, calling it the first Israeli strike in Gaza aimed solely at aiding Abu Shabab’s men. The European Parliament's Left group denounced Israel’s detention of French-Palestinian member of the EU Parliament Rima Hassan and other activists aboard the Madleen vessel.

The group stated that intercepting the ship violated international law, referencing the International Court of Justice’s interim ruling from 16 months ago, which requires Israel to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. They also noted that Hassan’s arrest violated her parliamentary immunity.

The Left also said that the activists were denied food and water during the 16-hour transfer to Ashdod and were forced to stay on the ship's deck until nightfall.

The group further demanded the immediate suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, the imposition of an arms embargo on Israel, and stronger diplomatic measures to end the blockade on Gaza.

⭕️ Smotrich move threatens Palestinian banking system

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich ordered the cancellation of a key waiver that allowed Israeli banks to operate with Palestinian banks.

The waiver protected Israeli institutions from legal risks and enabled the flow of Israeli shekels—vital for the Palestinian economy, which lacks its own currency.

Smotrich’s decision, seen as retaliation for sanctions imposed on him by five Western nations, threatens to collapse the Palestinian banking system and cut off salaries, payments, and essential services across the West Bank.

The move has raised alarms among Israeli and Western officials, who warn it could trigger a humanitarian crisis and fuel regional instability.
