▪️Deadspin, the US-based sports news website, has been sold to Lineup Publishing, a new little-known European digital media company.

▪️The Associated Press is introducing its own e-commerce site, Axios reports. Called AP Buyline, the project is launched in partnership with the Taboola advertising platform. The site will start publishing next week and will include product reviews and personal finance coverage.

▪️The Russian government is intensifying its attacks against the largely exiled independent media sector in the wake of the rigged presidential election due to be held this week.

▪️In another sign of Meta’s deprioritisation of news, the company announced it would discontinue Facebook News, a dedicated tab for news content, in the United States and Australia and stop paying publishers for using their content when current contracts expire.

▪️TalkTV, a rightwing TV channel launched in the UK by News UK, will stop broadcasting on TV and go online-only after failing to amass meaningful television viewership and trailing behind its main rival GB News.

▪️DMGT, a British media company that owns the Daily Mail and other titles, showed revenue growth in 2023 “as a strong performance from UAE-headquartered B2B events division offset falling income at its UK consumer newsbrands”, Press Gazette reports.

▪️Over in the US, tech outlet 404 Media said it was profitable six months after launch, NiemanLab reports. The publisher is small but interesting for its ownership structure – it’s wholly owned by the journalists. “404 Media’s founders and co-owners — a staff of four — all come from Motherboard, Vice’s tech vertical”, NiemanLab writes.
