The Fix Media

In a world grappling with complex social issues, traditional journalism often focuses solely on exposing problems. However, there's a powerful alternative that offers a fresh perspective: solutions journalism.

This innovative approach takes a constructive stance by highlighting responses to social challenges and exploring what works, what doesn't, and why, based on four key pillars:

🔹 Response: Delving into the specifics of how solutions operate
🔹 Evidence: Providing proof of effectiveness (or lack thereof)
🔹 Limitations: Acknowledging the limitations of solutions
🔹 Insights: Extracting valuable lessons for others to learn from

Solutions journalism can be its own dedicated vertical or an approach that reframes the way we view storytelling, empowering audiences and driving positive change.

👋 So what news has this week brought us in the field of media?

Here are this week's stories picked by our team:

▪️A Russian court extended the pre-trial detention of American journalist Evan Gershkovich by another three months, a year after he was arrested on bogus spying allegations. Gershkovich has covered Russia for The Wall Street Journal and became the first US journalist detained in Russia on spying allegations since the Cold War.

▪️Spain’s High Court ordered to block Telegram and then quickly reversed its decision. The initial order was issued on Friday following the allegations of copyright infringement by major Spanish media companies.

▪️G/O Media, an American media company that owns a set of digital news brands, is continuing to sell off its portfolio. The company sold film and TV website The A.V. Club to Paste Magazine, which recently also acquired feminist publisher Jezebel from G/O Media. The food website The Takeout has been sold to internet company Static Media, Adweek notes citing an internal memo.

V-Ventures, the investment arm of the Netherlands-based foundation Vereniging Veronica, has acquired a minority stake in The Fix.

The investment will enable us to develop our research and advisory operations, helping European media leaders with data-driven decision-making and strategic support.

“This investment is an important step for The Fix as we are scaling the organization and taking on ambitious research projects like research in cooperation with JX Fund on Russian and Belarusian exiled media, their importance for the democratic struggle of the region, and the unique window they offer their audiences”, said Jakub Parusinski, co-founder and director of The Fix.

“We are very excited to announce the investment in The Fix. This formalizes the already existing ties between The Fix and V-Ventures, enabling V-Ventures to support more independent journalistic outlets that are so important in the current media landscape that is under substantial pressure”, said Lot Carlier, executive director of V-Ventures.

We're excited about this partnership and look forward to strengthening our mission of cracking the media management puzzle through insights, solutions, and data.

Stay tuned for more updates!
