▪️Last week, Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky signed into law a bill on the media. Passed by the parliament earlier in December, the law aims to harmonise regulations of the media industry and introduces regulation of online media and web platforms. Critics, including international journalistic organisations, have previously criticised the bill for extending the powers of the state in regulating the media industry.
▪️The Guardian suffered a serious cyber attack in late December that forced the newspaper to shut down its office for a month. The attack happened on December 20th and forced the publisher to ask its reporters to work remotely.
▪️Vox Media, the US digital media company that owns outlets like Vox, The Verge and New York magazine, codified its ban on advertising from fossil-fuel companies, as well as any companies that mine nonrenewable resources.

▪️The Wall Street Journal named Emma Tucker as its new top editor, the first woman ever to lead WSJ’s newsroom in the paper’s 133-year history.
Tucker, who is 56 years old, comes from the UK, having previously led The Sunday Times and served in various positions at The Times.
▪️67 journalists have been killed around the world in connection with their jobs so far this year, according to the data released by the International Federation of Journalists. This represents a notable increase compared to 47 killings last year, marking “a reversal of the decline recorded in recent years”.
▪️Twitter officially announced it would shut down its newsletter service Revue. Plans for its shutdown have been reported previously, but this week the company officially confirmed them and announced that the service would be discontinued in mid-January.

▪️Latvia’s media regulator revoked the licence for Dozhd (TV Rain), independent Russian TV channel that relaunched outside Russia earlier this year.
Its licence in Latvia was revoked earlier this week because of multiple occasions where Dozhd broadcast content supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine.
▪️New York Times journalists started a historic 24-hour strike today as management and the union haven’t managed to agree on the conditions of a new contract. 1,100 people are expected to walk out.
▪️BBC is preparing to go fully online over the next decade, its director general Tim Davie said in his speech to the Royal Television Society, adding that "Britons prepare for the closure of many standalone channels and radio stations by the 2030s."
