Here are this week's stories picked by our team:

▪️Journalists reporting for Italian newspaper La Repubblica came under Russian shelling on Wednesday in Kherson, resulting in the death of Ukrainian journalist and fixer Bogdan Bitik. Italian journalist Corrado Zunino was wounded in the attack.

▪️Several high-profile firings took place in the American cable news industry early this week. Most notably, conservative news channel Fox News parted ways with its most prominent host Tucker Carlson.

▪️Other notable ousters in American cable television include popular CNN host Don Lemon who Axios reports “didn’t fit as well with CNN’s new approach to more moderate conversations” (and was also a subject of controversy over his sexist remark), as well as CEO of NBCUniversal Jeff Shell investigated for an inappropriate romantic relationship with a woman in his company.

▪️Fox News, the most popular conservative TV news channel in the United States, reached a last-minute settlement with voting machines manufacturer Dominion over the latter’s defamation lawsuit. Fox News will pay the company $787.5 million (€718.6 million) to avoid going through a trial, which was due to begin this week.

▪️Swedish Radio, Sweden’s public radio service, announced it would quit Twitter, becoming the first big European media organisation to do so recently. While individual journalists are still free to use the platform, organisational accounts will either shut down or cease publication.

▪️Substack Notes, the platform’s new feature for short posts that aims to provide an alternative to Twitter, was rolled out to all users this week. The product allows to post “almost anything—including posts, quotes, comments, images, and links”, the announcement says.

▪️NPR became the first major US news organisation to ditch Twitter on Wednesday – because of the platform’s decision to label the broadcaster “government-funded media”.

▪️The US government designated American journalist Evan Gershkovich as “wrongfully detained” this week, effectively making an official recognition that he is a hostage taken by the Russian state.
