For real impact though, media organisations also need to examine their own operations and value chains to reduce their carbon footprints for coherence and trust when reporting on this critical issue.

📰 How to practise community-centred journalism
In an era of declining trust in news and disconnected communities, community-centred journalism is gaining momentum. Here are the core principles outlined in the report by Agora Journalism Center:
▪️Traditional journalism often prioritises newsroom interests over community needs. This model fails to resonate with underserved communities, leading to a lack of trust. Community-centered journalism flips the script, putting community members at the heart of the process.
▪️Community-centred journalism focuses on the ongoing issues faced by local people, not just what interests the newsroom. By addressing community information needs, stories become relevant and impactful. Examples include the volunteer-run @The Bristol Cable, which gives voice to local problems.
▪️To truly understand community needs, journalists must engage in ongoing dialogue with community representatives. By actively listening and empathising, journalists can gain deeper insights and build stronger connections.
▪️Engaged journalism requires a partnership between communities and journalists, treating each other as equals. By fostering trust and equity, outlets can regain the confidence of communities. Collaborating, not just reporting, creates a stronger bond between journalism and the people it serves.
▪️Journalists can embrace a mindset centered around belonging to a community and serving its well-being. By focusing on solutions, positive changes, and aspirations, journalism becomes a catalyst for community empowerment.
▪️Community-centred journalism aims for an exchange, where the community feels part of the solution and journalism becomes a platform for their experiences, marking a shift from extractive to collaborative.
▪️Implementing community-centred journalism requires reimagining traditional practices. Measuring success goes beyond clicks and subscriptions; it's about long-term impact. Monetisation and audience engagement can pose challenges, but winning the trust of your community is the ultimate reward here.
