▪️The death toll of the Israel-Gaza war continues to rise, marking the conflict to be the deadliest one for journalists in recent decades. According to estimations by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), “at least 79 journalists and media workers were among the more than 24,000 killed since the war began on October 7” as of January 9.
▪️In recent years YouTube has emerged as one of the dominant platforms for podcast listening, despite the video platforms limited functionality for podcasts. YouTube has been building up more audio functionality, most recently with debuting RSS integration.
▪️In late December, The New York Times sued ChatGPT creator OpenAI and Microsoft over alleged illegal use of the publisher’s content in training their large language models, marking the most prominent creator lawsuit against an AI company so far. This week OpenAI came out with a public response to the legal action.

▪️In the last days of December, The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement. The publisher alleges the two companies illegally used its content in training their large language models, including the ones powering OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
▪️The new Polish government led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk has set out to reform the country’s public media. Analysts and international media have long alleged that Poland’s public television channel TVP became government mouthpieces under the previous government by the right-wing Law and Justice party (PiS). The new centrist government has made it a priority to take control over TVP, as well as state radio and news agency organisations.

▪️Schibsted, a major European publisher based in Norway, has reached a deal to sell its news media operations to its main owner Tinius Trust. The move would see the company split into two entities, with the marketplace business remaining listed on the stock market.
▪️MailOnline, one of the most popular UK’s news websites, plans to experiment with a paywall. The publisher “will charge users in [the UK] to read a select 10-15 articles a day… although the vast majority of the nearly 1,500 stories published by the site every day will remain free-to-read”, Financial Times reports.
▪️The New York Times has hired its first senior editorial leader with remit over AI initiatives. Zach Seward, previously co-founder and CEO of business publication Quartz, became NYT’s Editorial Director of Artificial Intelligence Initiatives.

▪️Threads, Meta’s text-based social platform, is set to launch in the European Union in December. The service wasn’t available in the EU since its launch in June because of the company’s initial concerns over local privacy regulations, which it appears to have addressed since then.
▪️The BBC might face additional financial struggles as it’s likely to receive a below-inflation rise in the licence fee, the main source of the broadcaster’s revenue, according to a report from The Guardian citing UK culture secretary Lucy Frazer.

▪️Artifact, a news aggregation platform launched by Instagram co-founders over a year ago, announced it would shut down. Artifact launched as a news reading app that evolved to a curation and news discovery platform.
▪️On Monday, Russia launched its pro-government version of Wikipedia, called Ruwiki. The website is the most high-profile attempt so far to build an online encyclopedia filtered through the lens of pro-Kremlin propaganda.
