Advanced Ḥanafī Uṣūl – al-Jaṣṣāṣ

The development of Ḥanafī Uṣūl and a critical analysis of the advanced Uṣūl text, al-Fuṣūl Fī al-Uṣūl by the 4th century Ḥanafī scholar, Imām Abū Bakr al-Rāzī al-Jaṣṣāṣ (d. 370 AH). The course covers the whole book.

This course is an opportunity to be part of a deep and comprehensive study of a key yet often neglected topic area in Usul ‘l-Fiqh.
Requisites:
– Fluency in reading Arabic – mandatory
– Intermediate-to-advanced understanding of Fiqh and Uṣūl al-Fiqh – mandatory
– Understanding of Ḥanafī Fiqh and Uṣūl al-Fiqh – preferable
Who Is this For?
This course is for students and graduates with advanced comprehension of Arabic language and those who have studied the disciplines of Islamic law at an advanced level. This course is not for beginners. For a beginner-level introduction to Uṣūl, please join the al-Waraqāt course on-demand at the Legacy Academy webpage.
Lectures are delivered in English, but there will be Arabic readings within the sessions. Electronic handouts will be provided.
Course Objectives
In this course, participants will be initially invited to discuss the early development of Hanafi Usul and whether the status quo of classical Usul writing is an accurate reflection of what the Imams of the School intended. Thereafter, participants will engage in readings with selected sections from the book – (these sections below will take more than one lesson)
This course is On-Demand.
Over 100 hours of instruction, 44 Lessons.
Students who register will be added to a student group in which one accesses the recordings, can engage in discussion, or ask the instructor questions.

2. Spirituality - Commentary on Salvation from Misguidance (translated as "Deliverance from Error") by Al Ghazali رحمه الله
and
Book of Assistance by Imam Al Haddad رحمه الله
Spirituality no doubt has a path that is set. The scholars of our past described what is one of the greatest aspects of our faith - filling the voids that can only be fulfilled by knowing our connection to the Almighty.
Imam Al Ghazali's short, but impactful, text, "Salvation from Misguidance," is a text that is famously known as partly an auto biography mapping out his own spiritual journey. What makes Al Ghazali so relatable is that he actually shows his own vulnerablity. It is in reading this very accessible language and honesty that made Al Ghazali's works so impactful. This text has been translated multiple times as "Deliverance from Error" and we hope to in this class dive into re reading this text as it's supposed to be - Al Ghazali speaking to the heart of the person he's addressing; not an academic and dry text that is bereft of emotion and devotional spirituality.
Al Ghazali speaks about some of the impediments to spiritual connection that were present in his time, we will also of course discuss some contemporary blocks that stop us from spiritually connecting and blocking us from truly connecting with our faith (contemporary spiritual road blocks).
Of course, as we finish discussing the path - we must actually begin to speak about the path to take! Hence why we dive into the work Book of Assistance by Imam Al Haddad رحمه الله who is known to simplify Al Ghazali and contemporize him in all of his works on spirituality. The Book of Assistance is an amazingly short, yet profoundly practical book. When we couple understanding salvation from misguidance with what to do, it helps us navigate our own spiritual journey.
