What is The Folkthing?
The Folkthing is a coalition of leaders from traditional heathen organizations, community influencers, and researchers working together to revitalize heathenry as a thriving, authentic tradition. While each organization maintains its independence, we unite to establish shared standards of practice and belief, fostering cohesion and elevating the way heathenry is understood and practiced. Together, we aim to build a stronger, more unified future for the Teutonic faith.
This will consist of a standardized format for blóts and sumbls with room for local customs and traditions to be maintained and expressed as seen throughout history. Our goal is to rebuild the Tradition (worldview) that is expressed through traditions (local customs). The Folkthing is mostly easily understood through the following mission statement.
To promote and facilitate an authentic and traditional teutonic faith and practice, to encourage cohesion and unity of praxis and doctrine; and to establish the forum necessary to facilitate these goals.

The Folksthing Council would formally like to invite you to help us gain insight on how to support our Folkish communities grow. The need for women and families is vital to the longevity of our traditions that will be passed down to our children and grand-children.
This 10 question survey hopes to gain insight from biological women across the USA who recognize themselves or practice Nordic Paganism, Odinism, Asatru, Forn Seid and/or Sedish as Traditional Folkish Women. *** Traditional Folkish Women are characterized by embracing and practicing a culturally rooted religious lifestyle, often guided by family-centered gender roles shaped by longstanding cultural traditions. This identity is distinct from any political affiliations or ideologies. ***
This survey is voluntary and none of the questions are required. However, the more detailed information we are able to collect the better idea we will have to help support the community grow. There will be no data collection of identifying nature and we hope that you will share this survey with other women in your community.

One of the biggest questions imaginable, and one that for many pagans need not even be asked. Yet, curiosity abounds. Drawing upon novel research, Dan sheds light upon the nature and intent of the gods, and even speculates as to the cosmic location, appearance and smell (yes, smell) of the gods. If you're seeking closeness with divinity, this episode is not to be missed.
In any belief system, including Germanic polytheism, orthodoxy serves as the foundation upon which our understanding of the gods and traditions is built. I recently came across a well-written article that argued the importance of orthodoxy in maintaining the integrity of belief. The author insightfully explained that in order to believe something is real and authentic, there must be a clear standard or framework to draw from. Without this, beliefs can easily fragment or lose coherence. Orthodoxy provides this necessary structure, ensuring that our practices and beliefs remain connected to the ancient wisdom and customs passed down through the lore, keeping our faith grounded and meaningful.

Thank you all for supporting Hearthfire Radio. This is a big step forward for heathenry. So many of you have reached out and said things like "this has been needed for years". It's a labour of love.
But the reality is, it's also very expensive. We budgeted for it to run 3 months before it has to pay for itself. We are now halfway through that 3-month period and we are also halfway to the number of subscriptions we need. But the bulk of people signed up right away, so this means that we are actually behind, and may not meet our goal in time.

The Shift From Ásatrú to Traditional Heathenry:
Several years ago, an interesting shift took place. Many of us distanced ourselves from the term Ásatrú, which means “loyal to the Æsir.” While we do hold loyalty to our gods, we felt this term doesn't capture the fullness of our ancestral tradition or worldview. Ásatrú has become too broad a label, that is often used by universalists, new agers, left-hand path occultists, and even some who claim to be folkish, which has watered down our ancestral culture and theology. As a whole, Ásatrú has diluted the distinct cultural and theological essence that originally defined our ancient beliefs by incorporating foreign influences.
We transitioned to the term Sedian (or Sedish) to more accurately reflect our dedication to our ancestral customs. "Sed" comes from the old term forn sed, meaning "ancient customs," and carries with it the weight of tradition. While we recognize that we are living in modern times, Sed still signifies that we follow a traditional worldview rooted in the beliefs of our ancestors. It allows us to honor our ancient past without being trapped in anachronism, ensuring that our practices remain relevant and sacred today. We are not Vikings, nor do we pretend to be. We are Germanic polytheists who respect both our gods and ancestors.
We view our Tradition as something deeply sacred, one that should not be molded by external, modern ideologies that seek to distort its foundation. Instead, we focus on theological reconstruction, exploring the beliefs and practices of our ancestors to form a worldview that connects directly to our heritage. By reclaiming the essence of our faith, we are able to maintain a genuine connection to our past, while applying that wisdom to our present lives.
This shift from Ásatrú to Sedian was not just a change in name; it was a necessary realignment of purpose. It emphasizes our commitment to preserving the ancient ways, while allowing our tradition to grow in ways that stay true to its roots. This shift allows for us to build a living tradition supported by our history, placing emphasis on the guidance of the gods and ancestors, and reforging our link in our ancestral tradition.
This led to the creation of the Sedian Tenets, a set of guiding principles that outline our beliefs and attitudes towards both our Tradition and the traditions that shape our lives. These tenets serve as a clear expression of our religious and philosophical views, providing a framework for understanding how our ancestral worldview operates in the modern world. By explicitly defining these values, we aim to discourage those whose beliefs are incompatible with ours, while fostering an environment where families can come together, unified by a shared dedication to our heritage, and watch our way of life flourish once more.
In short, Sedian/Sedish belief rejects the diluted interpretations that are often found in modern influences and embraces authentic ancestral customs and theological reconstruction; thus, distinguishing itself from Ásatrú, in both its folkish and universalist expressions, by maintaining a stricter, more focused dedication to ancestral heritage and tradition.
The Debate Between Mythic Literalism and Allegorical Interpation:
How did ancient cultures view their gods and myths? From the Greek philosophers and poets like Xenophanes, Plato, and Homer to the Norse sagas and of Odin and Thor, the debate between mythic literalism and allegory is an enduring one. Did the gods truly walk among men, or were these stories meant to convey deeper wisdom?
In this article, I examine different viewpoints on the debate and explore how these ancient cultures may have blended literal belief with symbolic interpretation.

I have organized an art auction to benefit my dear friend J of Arcane Accents. Her husband unexpectedly and tragically passed away recently and our wonderful art community has come together and donated exquisite pieces to raise money for J and her young son.

The Hochdorf Chieftain's Grave, although identified as a Celtic burial, reveals compelling connections to later Germanic traditions. Discovered in 1968 in present-day Baden-Württemberg, Germany, by an amateur archaeologist, this burial site contains artifacts that suggest a sophisticated society with both ritual and social significance.
The grave included nine drinking horns, a large cauldron capable of holding 110 gallons of mead, and cannabis. Other items, such as nail clippers, a comb, and jewelry, reflect attention to grooming, status, and ceremonial significance.
These findings point to a figure of considerable authority, possibly a King Priest, who combined political and spiritual leadership. The parallels between this Celtic burial and later Germanic customs hint at a shared cultural heritage or interactions between these groups in the region.

~ Nafnfestr– Name Fasting ~
Nafnfestr is to give something or someone a name was a sacred act, as if this were giving life or new life to the being or object. When a child is born this act is not only performed in conjunction with their hallowing before the Gods, but also in their acceptance into the family and clan. By the ancient laws, once a child was given a name they could not be exposed, and if such were done it would be murder.
The rite of “Name-Fastening” is one that can take place at any age, if one is given a name by someone else. We see this in several sources and many of them refer to names given later in one’s life. Typically this also involves giving a gift called the Nafnagipt or “Name-Gift.”
