Today, we remember the victims of the Bhopal gas leak in India, the world’s worst industrial disaster, which killed thousands and exposed over half a million people to toxic gas on this day in 1984.
The disaster resulted from negligence, design flaws, understaffing, absence of maintenance, and lack of training. Basic safety measures that should’ve been taken weren’t just to increase profits at the expense of people’s safety. The first official and conservative death toll was 2,259, but other estimates have put the number as high as 20,000.
Tens of thousands who were exposed to the gas but survived were severely disabled, and many continue to die prematurely today.

The late James Baldwin, the influential Black American revolutionary writer and activist, died on this day in 1987. Baldwin was a groundbreaking author who explored themes of masculinity, sexuality, race, and class, connecting these issues to the key political developments of his era, including the civil rights and LGBT+ rights movements.
Disillusioned by the racism in US society, Baldwin moved to Paris in 1948, where he lived until 1957 before returning to New York. However, in 1970, he returned to France. More than three decades after his death, Baldwin’s work and activism still influence discussions about systemic racism and social justice.
Watch Baldwin discussing the racism he experienced in the US that influenced his decision to leave his homeland.

Georgian protesters were knocked to the ground by water canons after the ruling party announced they were suspending EU accession talks until 2028. Protesters used green lasers to try to blind police, who deployed both pepper spray and tear gas. 43 people were arrested.
More than 100 Georgian diplomats signed a letter saying the government’s decision was unconstitutional. Georgia’s Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, claimed that EU membership would hurt the country as it would require it to cancel visa-free agreements and trade deals with other countries, such as Russia. The European Parliament also announced sanctions on top party officials.
The Georgian Dream party was founded by former prime minister and billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili. Russia and Georgia haven’t had formal relations since the 2008 invasion by Russia, but the Georgian Dream is looking to have a limited rapprochement.

Tensions escalated in Osaka, Japan, when police and court officials tried to evict people at a homeless shelter and former labor welfare center. Police disrupted the soup kitchen while supporters of the homeless rushed to the barricades set up at the premises.
Japanese police have begun enforcing evictions across Osaka in a bid to make drive the homeless out ahead of the Expo 2025 set to be held in the city.
Established in 1970 in Osaka’s Nishinari Ward, the center served as a hub for welfare support and job placement for day laborers. It closed in 2019 for reconstruction to address earthquake safety concerns, and since then has became a makeshift shelter for the homeless.
Osaka Prefecture, which owns the land, filed a lawsuit to evict the homeless. Lower courts ruled in favor of the prefecture in 2021 and 2022, with the Supreme Court upholding the eviction order in May 2023.

This day in 2001 marked the dramatic climax of the economic crisis in Argentina and the moment when the illusion of neoliberal growth came crashing down. The right-wing government under Fernando de la Rúa nearly stopped bank payments, triggering mass panic and riots. The crisis caused a mass uprising, eventually ushering in the leftist Kirchner governments who restored economic growth during Latin America’s “Pink tide” era.
Since coming to power, “libertarian” President Javier Milei implemented many policies that led to the 2001 crisis, namely, “shock therapy” austerity, this time as a precursor for the dollarization of the economy.
Whether he can pull this plan off or be forced to leave power like in 2001 will depend on the strength of Argentina’s social movements, which have been weakened after four years of being allied to a social democratic government that disappointed its supporters by presiding over falling living standards and growing IMF debt.

Yemen was officially declared an independent country on this day 57 years ago. Yemen’s independence day was the conclusion to four years of armed struggle led primarily by the leftist National Liberation Front (NLF) and the Arab nationalist Front for the Liberation of Occupied South Yemen.
From 1963 to 1967, the NLF led an arduous two-pronged struggle against both British colonial forces as well as the feudal sheikhdoms and sultanates in power all across what was then the Federation of South Arabia, a British colonial protectorate.
Throughout November 1967, the British colonial forces gradually evacuated Aden and Southern Yemen as NLF forces drew closer. Mutinies in the puppet “South Arabia Army” were rampant and frequent, and on the 29th of November 1967, the final agreement for independence was signed in Geneva. The independence agreement took effect the forthcoming day.
