🟡 NOW: Anti-government forces have seized control of Suwayda, a Druze city in southwestern Syria. The takeover was reportedly swift and largely without bloodshed, following the withdrawal of Syrian Arab Army troops from the city. Suweyda is adjacent to the Golan Heights which is partially occupied by Israel.

Mexican women are outraged that judges acquitted 19-year-old Diego “N” for selling “deepfake” sexual images of his former classmates.
The National Polytechnic Institute student sexually exploited the women by altering photos of eight of his classmates. A total of 160,000 images and 20,000 videos of the like were found in his possession.
Yet, Judge Francisco Salazar Silva acquitted the perpetrator based on an alleged absence of witnesses to prove that he committed the crimes against two of his eight victims.
The hearing for the third victim of Diego “N” is scheduled for December 9.

NOW: The Chinese and Russian Embassies have instructed their citizens to leave Syria, indicating the anti-government offensive is gaining momentum at a rapid pace. They are reportedly within several kilometers of Homs city, the last stop before the capital Damascus.

Police murdered 15-year-old student Alexis Grigoropoulos in cold blood in the center of Athens, Greece, on this day in 2008. The murder of Grigoropoulos led to widespread outrage, sparking an unprecedented wave of protests that rocked the country for weeks as students organized riots and occupied schools and universities across Greece. 16 years later, justice has still not been served.
Police initially attempted to give a false account of the murder. Grigoropoulos’ murderer, police officer Epaminondas Korkoneas, walked free after his initial life sentence had been reduced despite being found guilty. He only spent 11 years in prison.
Meanwhile, one of Grigoropoulos’ best friends, the young anarchist Nikos Romanos, who was with Grigoropoulos on the night of his murder, was arrested under false pretexts five years later. Having suffered abuse at the hands of the police, Romanos led a hunger strike in 2014. The jailed anarchist was freed in 2019.

🟡 SYRIA LATEST: Anti-Assad forces have captured Hama city. The next stop is Homs, whose countryside is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Palmyra, which ISIS significantly damaged after they captured it in 2015. Since 2017, it has been back under Syrian government control.

The US has bombed Syria twice since anti-Assad forces captured swaths of territory in the country’s northwest. The Pentagon has said its intervention is “not linked to any broader activities in northwest Syria by other groups.”
The Syrian government accused the US of providing air support to the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
The Pentagon also said its airstrikes constituted “self-defense,” even though occupying forces do not have the right to self-defense according to international law.

Happy birthday to the Italian anarchist socialist theorist and militant revolutionary Errico Malatesta! He was described by friends and foes alike as the greatest Italian revolutionary of his generation.
Malatesta led an armed insurrection with about 30 comrades in the province of Benevento, capturing two villages from the ruling monarchy in southern Italy. Due to the quick arrival of troops, the uprising was soon crushed.
Malatesta was imprisoned for 16 months before being released into exile, living in Switzerland, France, Romania, England, Argentina, the US, the Netherlands, and finally Egypt, where he organized a group of fighters to oppose the British during the Anglo-Egyptian War in 1882.
A blossoming anarchist movement in Italy and a collapsing government lured Malatesta back to his homeland in 1898, where he was soon arrested following clashes. He spent his last years working as an electrician and passed away in 1932, suffering from bronchial pneumonia.
