Communities in the suburbs of Athens, Greece, have been gathering firewood to heat their homes, as the Greek government warns the country is about to enter its “worst winter since 1942”.

The local authority in the Glyfada neighborhood is refusing to send chopped and pruned trees to industrial facilities to be recycled, instead distributing them to residents for free.

Greece has the second highest electricity prices in the European Union reaching €416 per megawatt hour in September, the second highest since March this year. Most of the country’s energy imports are from Russia.
