Today, we remember the Mirabal sisters, also known as Las Mariposas, who fought against the deadly dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic, which led to the deaths of thousands.
The three sisters were violently assassinated by Trujillo’s henchmen on November 25, 1960, and soon became “symbols of both popular and feminist resistance.” November 25 has since been designated the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The rising tide of the Mediterranean sea has swallowed up tents of displaced Palestinians in Gaza. As winter arrives, it brings even more misery to over 2.3 million people who have been facing non-stop Israeli bombardment for over a year.
Over one million Palestinians do not have sufficient shelter with winter now bringing cold, rainy weather and increasing the risk of flooding sewage. Israel’s destruction of infrastructure in Gaza, including health and sanitation, has also increased the death rate among displaced Palestinians.

Berlin police attacked protesters flooding the streets for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Barely 500 meters into their march, a wall of uniformed police blocked the path of the 1,000 protesters-strong march, leading to arrests and police violence. This year, the protest centered around the genocide in Gaza, where women have borne a disproportionate share of the suffering. Despite the crackdowns, the resistance on Berlin’s streets roared on.

The Israel Defense Force’s war crimes are all over social media, but did you know that the IDF’s terrorist history goes back decades? On November 25, 1940, the Zionist paramilitary organization known as Haganah bombed a British ocean liner bound for the island of Mauritius, killing 267 people, including over 200 Jews.
Haganah is the most significant paramilitary precursor to the IDF and committed countless massacres, such as the bombing of civilian targets and the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians during the Nakba.
Not only did the Haganah lay the foundations for the IDF, but they also founded Israel Military Industries (IMI), known for its production of several infamous Israeli weapons. Today, IMI is a subsidiary of Elbit Systems, Israel’s biggest arms producer, supplying the IDF with the means to go through with their genocide in Gaza.

On International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Gisèle Pelicot serves as a symbol of defiance in France. Waving the right to anonymity, she is currently facing 50 of her rapists in court. She endured over a decade of abuse, including more than 200 assaults orchestrated by her husband through online recruitment. Her trial has sparked widespread protests across France and has renewed the conversation about patriarchal violence. Her message to other survivors is: "Shame is theirs, not ours."

Uruguay’s leftist party, the Broad Front, has won the presidential elections and defeated the ruling neoliberal government of President Lacalle Pou. The president-elect Yamandú Orsi is seen as the protégé of Pepe Mujica, former president and leftist guerilla fighter.
The Broad Front is a coalition containing social democrats, socialists, as well as the Communist Party of Uruguay. It has also contained right-wing figures such as Luis Almagro, current chief of the Organization of American States. Almagro spearheaded coup attempts in Venezuela, Bolivia and elsewhere. He was expelled in 2019 for his positions on these issues.
