“Stop being a slave to Western foreign powers!” — Kenyans protested the state’s abductions of over 80 people since June. Protesters say those kidnapped were posing a threat to the government’s subservience to imperialist powers.
In June, Kenya experienced a large-scale mass uprising in response to an IMF-backed finance bill that would have raised the prices of basic necessities.
Police responded to the protest by firing tear gas and arresting 11 people, including an opposition politician.

Far-right groups had attempted to take advantage of the tragedy by only laying blame at the centrist central government, while allowing the regional government off the hook.

Today, on Sam Sharpe day, we remember the defiant enslaved Jamaican who helped topple slavery in the British Empire. Sharpe was a Baptist deacon in Montego Bay, Jamaica, who traveled around Jamaica to educate slaves about Christianity, which he believed would liberate them from bondage.
In 1831, Sharpe planned a slave rebellion by which slaves would refuse to work on Christmas Day to resist the daily dehumanization they experienced. The peaceful rebellion turned violent as the slaves set ablaze the Kensington Estate Great House, amongst other estates, and killed 14 white people.
The uprising is one of the biggest recorded in Trans-Atlantic Slave History, lasting 10 days and mobilizing more than 60,000 slaves. 200 slaves were killed, and during the trials that ensued, Sharpe was sentenced to death. His final words embody the spirit of the many who perished in the fight to liberate humanity from slavery. Two years later, the British Parliament passed the Abolition Bill, and in 1838, slavery was abolished.
