On this day in 2005, the Haditha massacre occurred in Iraq. Following a roadside bomb by the Iraqi resistance that killed a Marine, US forces slaughtered 24 innocent Iraqis in revenge, including children aged 1, 3, 5, 10, and 14, shot execution-style. Eyewitnesses recounted Marines forcing five men out of a car, executing them, and attacking homes with grenades and gunfire, killing 15.

Eman Waleed, a 9-year-old survivor, described witnessing her grandparents' execution. Despite calls for compensation, the families received only $38,000, with no thorough investigation conducted. Charges against all involved were dropped except for Frank Wuterich, who faced dereliction of duty but served no jail time. The Haditha massacre is just one of many atrocities during the US war on Iraq which killed over a million Iraqis.

Georgian police violently swept a protest encampment in downtown Tbilisi against the recent elections and the ruling Georgian Dream party. 16 people were detained, and several were injured. Protesters are demanding new parliamentary elections in light of accusations of fraud.

The opposition at the helm of the protests is staunchly pro-EU. Some have raised concerns that the movement is an attempt at a color revolution.

Georgia recently passed a law requiring NGOs receiving 20% of their funding from abroad to register as “advancing interests of a foreign power.” Protests against this law were organized by the US Embassy, but progressive students and youth also flooded the streets. They oppose what is seen as a crackdown on genuine criticism of the government that isn’t a psy-op by the US.

62 percent of Georgians say none of the political parties represent their interests.

Did you know that the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic was the first country in the world to allow abortion on demand? 104 years ago today the Commissioners of Justice and Public Health signed an edict legalizing abortion on medical and social grounds. The law was passed in an attempt to combat the growing number of illegal abortions which often led to women having complications and dying. At the time, 50 % of women who had illegal abortions were infected and 4% died.

However, the Bolshevik government did make it clear that it would like to eventually see abortion even performed legally disappear following the support it had introduced for working mothers that made it easier for them to balance child care and employment. They admitted however that due to the survival of some reactionary attitudes from the pre-revolutionary era and the difficult economic situation, it was necessary to legalize abortion to protect women's health. Read on.

Egyptian security forces fired tear gas and shotgun pellets to suppress protesters demonstrating against the death of 13 workers in a horrific traffic accident on the road between El Matarya and Port Said. The accident sparked anger over the poor condition of the roads and the lack of lighting, resulting from the Ministry of Transport’s decisions to reduce energy consumption.

Clashes erupted after hundreds of residents blocked the road following the accident, which occurred on Wednesday. Protesters demanded better facilities and maintenance of the road, which lacks street lamps, speed bumps, signage, or barriers to block heavy transport vehicles from using it amid the lack of safety infrastructure.

The EZLN, one of the world's most prominent social movements, was founded 41 years ago today. The guerrilla movement brought new optimism to the international left at a time when many socialist projects were being defeated.

Founded in 1983 by a group of Mexican intellectuals inspired by the Cuban Revolution, the Zapatistas took root in the struggles of various Maya peoples in the southern state of Chiapas. Their name pays homage to Emiliano Zapata, the legendary Mexican revolutionary.

The armed uprising, however, didn’t begin until January 1, 1994. On that day, thousands of indigenous supporters of the EZLN seized towns and villages across Chiapas. Their aim: to oppose the newly enacted NAFTA, which they see as a sellout of their land.

12 days of intense clashes followed, ended in a ceasefire. The Zapatistas retreated into the dense Lacandon Jungle near the Guatemalan border. From there, they forged a bold experiment in resistance: a de facto autonomous zone in eastern Chiapas.

Tens of thousands have descended upon New Zealand’s capital, Wellington, gathering in front of parliament to protest the controversial Treaty Principles Bill. If passed into law, the bill would reinterpret the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi, which uplifts Indigenous peoples.

With up to 50,000 estimated participants, the national hīkoi (Māori protest march) is estimated to be one of the largest in New Zealand’s history.

Protesters confronted the right-wing Act Party leader David Seymour, architect of the bill. They drowned him out with chants of “kill the bill” as he was booed back inside parliament after making a brief appearance before the march.

A Nazi weapons arsenal was uncovered during a house raid in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Confiscated were 43 rifles stamped with the Nazi Reichsadler emblem, 15 pistols, a machine gun, 3000 rounds of ammunition, Nazi propaganda, and more.

The raid was part of an international operation targeting weapons smuggling networks stretching across the US, Mexico, Australia, and Greece. While the potential buyers of such contraband may seem obvious, investigators are still piecing together the full case.

Argentina holds a complex historical connection to Nazism. Through the infamous “ratlines” system, Nazi war criminals fled to South America after WWII, evading prosecution for their crimes—many finding refuge in Argentina.

Starting in 1947, US intelligence agencies also exploited these ratlines, recruiting Nazi military strategists and scientists under the name “Operation Paperclip” in the emerging “Cold War” against the Soviet Union.

Tens of thousands flooded the streets of Thessaloniki to mark the anniversary of the 1973 anti-junta uprising at the Polytechnic University—an event etched in blood and defiance against Greece’s ruling military regime. Tanks tore through the university gates, crushing the rebellion in a brutal crackdown that left at least 40 protesters dead.

The uprising carried demands against imperialism and NATO influence. Its violent suppression reverberated through the decades, shaping the nation’s large anarchist movement and inspiring the now-defunct Marxist-Leninist guerrilla group, “Revolutionary Organization 17 November,” named after the uprising’s final day. Each year, a commemorative march brings the struggle back to life—often accompanied by fierce clashes in the streets.

Molotov cocktails lit up riot police as massive protests erupted at Colombia’s University of Cauca. The chaos led to multiple arrests and injuries on both sides, fueled by the explosive anger of students grappling with financial struggles.

While this is the first violent outburst at Uni Cauca in some time, it fits into a broader wave of unrest sweeping universities nationwide, all demanding similar reforms.

The situation grows more violent with every confrontation. In recent clashes, police have even resorted to firearms; though so far, there have been no fatalities.

Colombia’s first leftist government, led by Gustavo Petro, had promised sweeping reforms to ease student hardships. Petro also campaigned on disbanding ESMAD, the infamous riot police unit.

For now, though, those promises remain distant, leading to frustration among the students who were at the front of the 2021 Colombian “National Strike” uprising that propelled Petro's electoral victory in 2022.
