Were the Balkan wars of the 90s really resolved? On the border between Serbia and the now independent and majority-Albanian Kosova, the Serbian state is targeting Albanians by deeming their addresses of residence null and void. red. media spoke with both an Albanian and Serbian to understand what is going on.
The process of legally deeming that a citizen no longer resides at their recorded address is called “passivization.” When this happens, a citizen loses their right to vote, receive a passport, and more. The Council for Human Rights in the Preševo Valley reports that Albanians are being disproportionately passivized at their actual place of residence. Sometimes they are not given any notice or right to appeal.
The Serbian state has a long history of discriminating against, oppressing, and ethnically cleansing Albanians from their homes. Its latest behavior in southern Serbia serves as a way to divide and rule the impoverished Serbian, Albanian, and Roma populations living there.

On this day in 1893, Mao Zedong was born. He brought the Chinese Communist Party to power in one of the most extraordinary moments in the country’s history. The peasant turned revolutionary led the Chinese Revolution, transforming the country from a poverty-stricken feudal nation into a socialist society. After Mao’s death, Deng Xiaoping led a coup that started the restoration of capitalism in China. Modern-day China now continues this legacy of revisionism by using communist ideas to disguise capitalist exploitation.
