🟡 Syria Update — Day 26:
🟡 For the second day, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham’s (HTS) “Deterrence of Aggression” Operation reportedly continued security operations in the Syrian coastal region. The operation allegedly aims to target soldiers and members of the previous government, as well as confiscate weapons.
🟡 Israeli occupation forces have advanced further into Syria over the past 24 hours, establishing several outposts in villages in the provinces of Quneitra and Daraa. Israeli forces also conducted patrols and raids in the area over the weekend, kidnapping at least two people.
🟡 HTS Leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, commonly known as al-Jolani, named Murhaf Abu Qasra as the defense minister in the interim government. Abu Qasra is a senior HTS figure and led the offensive, which toppled former President Assad.
🟡 Syria’s de facto ruler, Ahmed al-Sharaa, stressed the need for unity and stability in Syria as he called for the lifting of all international sanctions against Syria.
🟡 Work resumed at the crossings linking the areas controlled by the Syrian Interim Government and the areas controlled by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on both banks of the Euphrates River in Deir Ezzor city.
🟡 Türkiye and the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) continue their military buildup around Kobani in preparation for an attack on Kurdish-controlled territories in northeast Syria.
🟡 Turkish security forces on Saturday detained 59 people in Istanbul for protesting the killing of two Kurdish journalists in a Turkish drone strike in northeast Syria.
🟡 Türkiye’s foreign minister met with the head of Syria’s new administration, promising help with the political transition and rebuilding the war-torn country after the fall of Assad.
🟡 A factory for Captagon, a highly addictive and illegal stimulant, was reportedly discovered in the Yaafour area in the Damascus countryside. The area was controlled by the Syrian Army’s Fourth Division, led by Maher al-Assad.

Happy Birthday to the pan-African revolutionary Thomas Sankara! Inspired by the example of the revolutionary armed movements in China and Cuba under Mao Zedong and Fidel Castro, he believed the armed forces could act as a progressive socialist force to help improve people’s lives.
Sankara launched extensive social, ecological, and economic programs and land reform. Setting a personal example, he cut his salary and sold off the government fleet of Mercedes while maintaining an austere lifestyle. He was also known for his solid anti-imperialist foreign policy, which challenged Western imperialism in Africa, mainly from France.
However, Sankara’s presidency came to a tragic end in 1987 when he was murdered during a coup organized by Blaise Compaoré, who had become Sankara’s closest friend after they had met in the military and who had been involved in the 1983 revolution. Read on.

For over two weeks, Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces have been besieging Jenin Refugee Camp in an attempt to crush the resistance groups. red. media met with the fighters who are determined to continue resisting the Israeli occupation.
The clashes started after the PA forces arrested members of the resistance groups and escalated when they subsequently killed two people. Although the PA has a history of cracking down on the resistance, these recent events marked a significant escalation.
While Gaza is being bombed and Israel invades the occupied West Bank, the PA has doubled down on serving the occupation.

French President Macron was heckled by survivors of the recent cyclone in Mayotte, a French colony near Mozambique. When criticized for the poor disaster response, Macron told grieving locals that they should be “grateful” to be part of France.
There is still no official death toll, but it is expected to be in the thousands as 77% of the colony lives below the poverty line. The makeshift slums worsened the effects of the cyclone, as many houses were quickly blown away.

Thousands rallied in Qamishli, the de facto capital of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES)—also known as Rojava—to support the US-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The SDF has been resisting weeks of attacks by the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) as the Turkish military prepares for yet another incursion into Kurdish-held Syrian territory.

Former president of Cuba Raúl Castro (age 93) made a rare public appearance last night to award Cuban athletes the “Hero of the Republic” medal. The recipients included Mijaín López, the only individual athlete to win five consecutive Olympic gold medals, and Omara Durand, an 11-time gold medallist in the Paralympics.
Did you know that Cuba is the most successful Latin American country at the Olympic games? They have more medals than any other despite having a population of just 11 million, 20 times smaller than Brazil.
This success came after the revolution democratized access to sports by rolling out a state plan providing free access to facilities and employing scores of professional coaches available to all.
The results of this can be seen by the fact that before the revolution, the country won just 12 medals between 1896 and 1960. All the gold medals were in fencing, a sport of the upper class. The rest of the country’s 259 medals came after the revolution, most of them in sports practiced by the working class, such as boxing and wrestling.

Military defections from the pro-Saudi camp to the pro-Ansarallah Yemeni Armed Forces have increased in recent days. Today, 60 soldiers switched allegiance to Ansarallah, receiving commendation from Yemeni Army Col. Ahmed Mohammed Binneh for their decision.
Since March 2015, a Saudi-led multinational military coalition, supported by the US, has been engaged in a protracted war aimed at toppling the Ansarallah-backed Yemeni government in Sana'a, but without success.

Anti-Nazi partisan Lepa Svetozara Radić from modern-day Bosnia-Herzegovina (former Yugoslavia) was born on this day in 1925. She was executed by the Nazis on February 8, 1943. This photograph (AI-upscaled and colorized) was later found on the body of the German soldier who took it.
Amid a fierce battle, Radić used up all her ammunition. Undeterred, she called on her comrades to fight with their bare hands until overpowered by blows from German rifle butts.
She fought in the 7th Partisan Company of the 2nd Krajina Detachment alongside her sister Dara. On February 8, they were helping refugees, primarily women and children, escape the Nazi 369th and 7th SS Division.
Scheduled for hanging, as the rope was tightened around her neck, her captors offered her a chance at life if she revealed the names of her comrades. Her response was persistent; she was no traitor, and her comrades would reveal themselves when avenging her death.

🟡 NEW: Dominique Pelicot, Gisèle Pelicot’s husband and the primary accused in raping Gisèle, was sentenced today to 20 years in prison. However, some of the other men involved in the abuse received only three years, with many serving their sentences at home under electronic bracelets.
Six of those convicted, benefiting from reduced sentences due to pre-trial detention, walked free ahead of Christmas. Gisèle’s children expressed deep disappointment, stating, “These sentences are too low.” Outside the courthouse activists chanted “Shame! Justice!”

Supporters of Bolivian President Luis Arce rallied in La Paz on the “Day of the Democratic and Cultural Revolution,” which commemorates former president Evo Morales’ first election victory. Arce’s supporters want to create a new Movement Towards Socialism party without Morales. red. media was on the ground and spoke with the Minister of Infrastructure.
There are currently two parallel versions of the MAS party, one led by Morales and the other led by a government worker loyal to Luis Arce. Both claim to be the “true” party. The fight is over who gets to stand as the MAS candidate at next year’s presidential elections. Morales held a rival rally in Cochabamba later that day.

🟡Syria Update — Day 22:
🟡Syria’s de-facto leader Ahmad Al-Sharaa, known commonly as Abu Mohammad Al-Jolani, told BBC in an interview with Jeremy Bowen that Syria would not be “a threat to the world,” and reiterated that post-Assad Syria would be inclusive across the sectarian divide.
🟡UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, concluded his talks with the de-facto leadership in Damascus late Wednesday afternoon. Pedersen expressed a certain optimism that the fall of the Assad government could mark “the start of a peaceful and democratic transition.”
🟡The US has been fighting ISIS cells in Syria, according to the Financial Times, in what is described as a very clear danger posed by the sudden reemergence of the extremist group. US forces claim to have struck more than 75 ISIS targets in the past two weeks alone.
🟡Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Wednesday afternoon that if the de-facto government in Damascus addresses what is being called the “YPG issue” in northeastern Syria, then the Turkish Army would refrain from launching any unilateral military action. The comments add further strain on Syria’s nascent rulers.
🟡Sectarian-driven revenge attacks by rebel groups appear to be continuing in the Alawite heartland of Syria’s Latakia Governorate. According to the Washington Post, at least 4 homes were burned down last Sunday, with many Alawite families having fled the country since the ousting of Assad on December 8.
🟡Significant protests and public discontent gripped the Syrian city of Tartus late Wednesday evening due to the sectarian revenge killings. Protesters gathered in front of the local police station demanding justice and action from the Syria’s de-facto authorities.

Today marks the birthday of possibly the most well-known Soviet leader in history, Joseph Stalin. While Tsarist records list his birth date as December 18, 1878, December 21, 1879, became the date observed in the Soviet Union. To this day, it remains the date on which communists around the world remember his legacy.
Stalin was born into an impoverished working-class family in Gori, Georgia. Engaging in secret workers’ meetings from a young age, he swiftly climbed the ranks of the socialist movement, emerging as a leading revolutionary across Tsarist Russia. Close to Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin, Stalin assumed the monumental task of steering the Soviet Union through the turbulent aftermath of the revolution following Lenin’s death.
Stalin’s leadership, spanning from 1924 until his passing in 1953, remains polarizing—even among communists. Yet, his most celebrated achievement was leading the Soviet Union to victory over fascism, culminating in the defeat of Hitler’s Germany.

🟡 Syria Update — Day 23:
🟡 US diplomats are visiting Syria for the first time in over a decade. The delegation will meet with the new Syrian leadership, including Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), despite HTS remaining on the US terrorist list.
🟡 The Pentagon says there are now 2,000 US troops in Syria, up from the previous 900 who comprise their “core presence.”
🟡 Iraq handed over 1,905 Syrian soldiers who previously fled to Iraq during the HTS takeover. The soldiers had protested to demand their safe return.
🟡 The Greek Orthodox Church in Syria canceled Christmas and all holiday celebrations until security is restored.
🟡 Syria’s largest oil refinery has halted operations after not receiving the crude oil from Iran, which previously made up the vast majority of the country’s oil production. Following the fall of Assad, an Iranian tanker carrying oil to Syria reversed its course in the Red Sea and headed back toward the Persian Gulf.
🟡 Syrians have taken to the streets in mass numbers in Damascus, demanding a civil and secular state in response to HTS’s talk of constitutional changes. The protest was sparked by comments by a new spokesman for the political administration regarding Syrian women’s ministerial and parliamentary representation.
