Hundreds of supporters of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol have taken to the streets near his Seoul residence, clashing with police in an effort to prevent his arrest. Yoon, facing an arrest warrant over his brief martial law declaration, has vowed to “fight until the end.”

Yoon considers the arrest warrant “invalid” and is resisting arrest, urging his supporters to “fight together to protect this country from anti-state forces.” The situation remains tense, with uncertainty surrounding when and how police might attempt the arrest, especially given the presidential security service’s prior interference with investigators. The service had blocked access to Yoon’s office and official residence despite a search warrant.

The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), leading a joint investigation team that includes police and prosecutors, has until January 6 to execute the arrest warrant.

On this day in 1804, Haiti declared its independence after a slave uprising turned into a revolution that crushed the French colonizers.

After kicking out the French, the former colony was renamed “Haiti”, the Indigenous Arawak name for the island, and would become the first free Black republic in the world as well as the first nation in the Western Hemisphere that abolished slavery.

The independence of Haiti was a major blow to French colonialism and inspired revolutionaries around the world as one of the most successful slave revolutions in history.

In an interview with red. media, Omar Abu Hashem (age 26) said, “I hope that next year I can be Santa Claus in a place without destruction.”

Omar lost his leg in 2018 during the Great March of Return when Israeli gunfire struck those protesting at the Gaza apartheid fence.

Displaced from Rafah after Israeli forces leveled his home, Omar now lives in a tent in Al-Mawasi, where he makes ends meet by selling coffee and tea.

“Stop being a slave to Western foreign powers!” — Kenyans protested the state’s abductions of over 80 people since June. Protesters say those kidnapped were posing a threat to the government’s subservience to imperialist powers.

In June, Kenya experienced a large-scale mass uprising in response to an IMF-backed finance bill that would have raised the prices of basic necessities.

Police responded to the protest by firing tear gas and arresting 11 people, including an opposition politician.

Unions in Valencia organized protests against the right-wing regional President, Carlos Mazón, over his poor handling of the recent floods that killed over 200. Protesters say that solidarity among ordinary people helped many survive while the authorities were absent.

Far-right groups had attempted to take advantage of the tragedy by only laying blame at the centrist central government, while allowing the regional government off the hook.

What’s the real story behind Mozambique’s election chaos?

In October 2024, FRELIMO declared victory in the presidential election, but the streets seem to be telling a different story. Protests erupted, violence spread, and over 250 lives were lost. After 50 years in power, FRELIMO’s legacy of corruption has left the country divided and its economy in ruins.

Venâncio Mondlane, the self-proclaimed “true president,” has stepped into the leading role of the protests. But some of his background and connections raise important questions about his intentions.

🟡 Syria Update — Day 34:

🟡 58,400 Syrian refugees have returned to Syria since December 8, predominantly from neighboring countries such as Lebanon, Jordan, and Türkiye. Some are also fleeing Syria out of fear of retaliation for serving in the Assad government or due to fear of discrimination by the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) administration.

🟡 Syria’s new rulers have installed foreign Jihadist fighters including Uyghurs, a Jordanian, and an Egyptian as leaders of the country’s armed forces as they try to unify the rebel groups into a professional military. The move increases concerns regarding discrimination and attacks against Syria’s large minority groups.

🟡 Germany will send €60 million ($62.5m) to Syria to further its influence in the country. All aid projects will be run through NGOs and UN aid agencies, not Syria’s new authorities.

🟡 The Pentagon emphasized that the ceasefire the US recently brokered between its NATO ally Türkiye and Kurdish partners in northern Syria is “still holding” despite reported clashes in the region.

🟡 Syria’s new foreign minister, Asaad Hassan al-Shibani, says he has accepted an invitation from Saudi Arabia to visit the country in what would be his first official foreign trip.

🟡 The new administration appointed Dr. Maysaa Sabrine as the first female head of Syria’s Central Bank.

🟡 Syria’s new government has formed a preparatory committee for the National Dialogue Conference in Syria, consisting of seven people, including a woman. On January 4 and 5 the conference will meet to discuss the country’s future after the collapse of the Assad government.

🟡 Ukraine’s foreign minister visited Damascus, promising more Ukrainian food aid for Syria. During the visit, the Syrian foreign minister called for close cooperation between the countries.

🟡 More than 1.7 million people across Syria have received bread assistance during the last month, according to UN reports.

The Kurdish-led, US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have regained control of eastern neighborhoods in Manbij, a strategic northern Syrian city. This comes after the SDF launched a counteroffensive against the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA).

Previously, the SDF withdrew from Manbij under a US-brokered ceasefire. However, clashes persisted as Türkiye prepared for another military incursion into Kurdish-held areas in northeastern Syria.

With ceasefire talks between the SDF, the US, Türkiye, and the SNA stalling, the autonomous administration faces a critical juncture amid increasing calls for its integration into the new Syrian government.

🟡 Syria Update — Day 33:

🟡 Israel has carried out another strike in Syria near Adra in rural Damascus, killing over 20 people.

🟡 Israeli occupation forces entered several villages in the Syrian Quneitra Governorate, besieged government buildings, and requested evacuation to search them.

🟡 Ahmed al-Sharaa, known as al-Jolani, who is the Commander-in-Chief of Syria's new administration announced that there will be no division of Syria in any form and no federalization for the Kurds. Al-Sharaa also stated that Kurdish-led and US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) will be disarmed and integrated into the army.

🟡 Syria’s new administration has detained nearly 300 people in a large-scale crackdown on who they claim are “loyalists to President Bashar al-Assad.”

🟡 Al-Sharaa also has said it could take up to four years to hold elections in the country. He estimated it could take up to three years to write a new constitution.

🟡 The former Al-Qaeda leader is carrying out raids and arrests against alleged members of Bashar al-Assad’s fallen government amid reports of sectarian killings of minorities by forces associated with the new Syrian government.

🟡 An investigation by Verify-sy, a Syrian organization based in Türkiye, showed that several videos of women and children allegedly in Sedanaya prison were false and misleading. They were filmed at a different location, as Sedanaya is a military prison designated for men.

🟡 Iraqi armed factions stationed at the Syrian border have pulled back and will be repositioning further away from the Syrian border following regional and international pressure to support the new Damascus government.

🟡 Syria’s military administration says that 70 reported officers from the Assad government were handed over by Lebanon. The officers were apprehended in Lebanon and transferred to the new leadership in Syria.

🟡 Protests are continuing against the Israeli army’s occupation of Syrian territory, including in Quneitra Governorate in the city of Khan Arnabeh.

🟡 The SDF says Türkiye is establishing two new military bases in Manbij and west of the Euphrates River in northern Syria. The Kurdish-led and US-backed force also claims to have targeted several Turkish positions in the vicinity.

🟡 Syria’s newly appointed head of women’s affairs Aisha al-Dibs has sparked backlash after after several comments calling on women to “not go beyond the priorities of their God-given nature” and to know “their educational role in the family.” “I will not make room for those who disagree with my ideas,” she concluded.

🟡 New mass graves have been uncovered in rural Homs and near the southern city of Sweida. The graves are believed to contain the bodies of victims of torture and killings carried out by the former government.
