Happy Birthday to C.L.R. James, a pioneer of the Black Marxist tradition! Born in the Caribbean island of Trinidad, James would go on to author one of the most important texts on the history of the Haitian Revolution, “Black Jacobins,” and apply his Marxist approach to analyze his favorite sport, Cricket.
His critical Marxism often put him in conflict with other parts of the left. Still, his intellectual contributions to the Pan-African movement and the socialist tradition as a whole remain undisputed.

Did you know that Nelson Mandela’s housing minister was actually a white South African communist and legendary anti-apartheid activist? Meet Joe Slovo, born on this day in 1926.
A long-time comrade of Nelson Mandela, Slovo dedicated his life to the struggle against apartheid and racism while fighting for a socialist revolution that would end racial and class inequality in South Africa. Just like Mandela, Slovo was also an advocate of Palestinian resistance against Israeli occupation.
In 1961, he helped found Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC), which would lead the resistance against apartheid. Due to political persecution from the South African apartheid government, Slovo was forced into exile in the UK, Angola, Mozambique, and Zambia. He returned to South Africa in 1990, and following the 1994 elections, he was appointed minister of housing in Nelson Mandela’s post-Apartheid government.

Thousands rallied near the residence of impeached Republic of Korea (ROK) President Yoon Suk Yeol. Just hours before the detention warrant tied to Yoon’s brief martial law declaration was set to expire, the ROK’s Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (CIO) urged police to take over efforts to detain him.
Security officials installed barbed wire within the residence’s compound and erected barricades as protests—both opposing and supporting Yoon—continued outside.
The request follows the CIO’s failed attempt to arrest Yoon last week after a five-hour standoff with the presidential security service at his residence. Police are reviewing the request internally and noted that the CIO may seek a new court warrant to extend the detention deadline.
