Watch Samora Machel, the socialist leader of FRELIMO (Front for the Liberation of Mozambique), deliver a powerful speech in Maputo, Mozambique in 1980. Machel addresses the revolutionary struggle, emphasizing the urgent need to eradicate reactionary forces and infiltrators to build a socialist society rooted in equality and dignity for all.
As a guerrilla leader and Mozambique’s first president, Machel was instrumental in nationalizing the country’s natural resources. He was also a staunch supporter of South Africa’s fight against apartheid. Tragically, Machel’s life was cut short in a plane crash, which the Soviet Union strongly suspected was orchestrated by apartheid South Africa.
Today, Mozambique faces renewed unrest, fueled by accusations of election fraud and protests that are met with brutal repression. Deep-rooted inequalities and exploitation persist in a nation still grappling with the legacy of colonialism and the challenges of building its future amid systemic poverty.

The unrest in Mozambique rages on, undeterred by the government’s heavy-handed crackdown amid accusations of election fraud. The state has responded to the unrest with brute force, unleashing deadly violence, including live ammunition, to silence the outcry.
Mozambique still lives under the long shadow of Portuguese colonial rule, a past that left it one of the poorest nations on Earth. Over 60% of the population struggles beneath the poverty line.
The protests are aimed at the ruling Frelimo Party, once Mozambique’s spearhead of the liberation fight against colonialism. But years of economic collapse have shattered trust in Frelimo’s leadership. Yet, Samora Machel—once Frelimo’s socialist leader—remains a figurehead among the protest movement on social media.

The ruling AKP party in Türkiye ousted three elected mayors from the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM) and installed “state-appointed trustees,” according to the Interior Ministry. This isn’t the first time such a move was made; similar actions have unfolded over the past few years. Even mayors from the main opposition party, CHP, aren’t immune to these power plays. Ongoing protests erupted soon after, especially in heavily Kurdish-populated areas, which saw heavy police crackdowns.

29 children are facing the death penalty at the hands of Nigeria’s neoliberal government. It is pressing charges against malnourished children and adults who have been involved in protests against the widespread starvation in the country.

At least 11 people have been killed by security forces in Mozambique as mass outrage against the ruling system refuses to be extinguished. 50 people have also been seriously injured by gunshots fired by police. Protesters say that Frelimo, the ruling party which was founded by liberating the country from Portuguese colonialism, stole the election with fake voters and ballot stuffing.
The “democratic socialist” opposition party, Podemos, claims it won 53% of the vote and has submitted a 100-page legal challenge to the results. On October 19, a lawyer Elvino Dias and a Podemos official, Paulo Guambe, were shot dead. They were reportedly helping to prepare the legal challenge to the election.
Mozambique is rich in natural resources like gas, coal, gold, and titanium but remains one of the poorest countries in the world. 65% of the population lives below the poverty line.

The Israeli occupation forces are escalating their attacks in the West Bank. They killed four Palestinians in raids near Jenin and Tubas, and conducted a drone strike. Military bulldozers destroyed streets in Qabatiya, where Israeli forces surrounded the house of resistance fighters. In Tubas, two men were killed and another person who was killed was paraded around atop an Israeli bulldozer. Since October 7, Israel has killed over 754 Palestinians across occupied West Bank.

”Down with the greed of the merchant” — Gazans are protesting against the Israeli siege and local war profiteers. While Israel continues blocking humanitarian aid, it allows a limited amount of goods to enter the private sector. This fuels a market of monopoly and corruption that increases prices by 10 to 20 times the original.
Israel created this problem by allowing for multiple layers of profiteering. Money is skimmed at every point in the commercial supply chain, from procurement and transport, to final sale. This leaves Gazans with limited goods at insanely high prices.
