Do you know who this iconic quote belongs to? The Brazilian socialist and Workers’ Party organizer Francisco “Chico” Mendes was tragically assassinated on this day in 1988 by wealthy landowners wanting to extract resources from the Amazon. As a tireless campaigner for the Amazon rainforest, which is now more threatened than ever, he knew precisely how closely environmental protection and class struggle are linked.

🟡 LATEST: A large convoy of Israeli tanks has been seen moving through Saida, a Syrian town located just east of the 1974 Golan Disengagement line. These tank movements contradict Israel’s earlier statement that its military forces were only active within the disengagement line.
Читать полностью…A Turkish invasion of the Kurdish-held city of Kobani in northern Syria seems imminent, US officials warn. The city was the site of an iconic fight to defeat ISIS. A significant military buildup of Turkish forces and its mercenaries in the Syrian National Army (SNA) has sparked fears of an imminent incursion. US-mediated ceasefire negotiations between Türkiye, the SNA, and the Kurdish-led and US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) broke down earlier this week.
The buildup, which includes Turkish-backed militias, commandos, and heavy artillery, appears similar to Turkish military moves ahead of its 2019 invasion of northeast Syria.
Ilham Ahmad, co-chair of the Foreign Relations Department of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), sent a letter to US President-elect Donald Trump, warning of an imminent Turkish military offensive. Ahmad urged Trump to pressure Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to stop any cross-border action, cautioning that a Turkish invasion could displace over 200,000 Kurdish civilians in Kobani, as well as numerous Christian communities.

🟡 Syria Update — Day 20:
🟡 Former Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad stated on official channels that his move to Moscow was unplanned and that “fighting against the terrorist onslaught” was his sole option. He denied seeking personal gain and rejected claims of betraying his people and allies.
🟡 Michael Ohnmacht, head of the EU’s Syria delegation, is set to establish direct contact with Damascus’ new HTS-led caretaker government. HTS remains an EU-designated terrorist group.
🟡 EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas said Russia and Iran should have “no place” in Syria’s future. Several Western foreign ministries link recognition of Syria’s de-facto authorities to removing Russian influence from Syria.
🟡 Turkish-backed SNA forces have gathered along the Qara Qozaq line southwest of Kobane and Ein Issa. Türkiye rejected the latest Kurdish-led and US-backed SDF ceasefire proposal, which will likely lead to tensions further escalating between the groups.
🟡 A UN delegation visiting Sednaya prison, known locally as “The Human Slaughterhouse,” was expelled by angry locals. A video posted to social media shows a woman accusing the UN of failing to act earlier despite evidence and past inquiries.
🟡 Residents of Abidin village in Daraa reportedly blocked Israeli forces from entering, marking the only known local resistance against Israel’s colonial expansion in Syria. Meanwhile, Damascus’ de-facto government has not acted against the occupation.
🟡 Mohammed Al-Jolani, de-facto leader of Damascus’ new administration, said Syria won’t be used as a base for attacks “against Israel or any other state.” He downplayed past Israeli presence, claiming targets were only Hezbollah and Iran-aligned forces.
🟡 A French diplomatic delegation has arrived in Damascus today for the first time in 12 years.

Riots erupted in France after Abdoulaye, a 34-year-old Black man, died in police custody. He suffered from severe mental health issues and experienced medical emergencies while the police apprehended him.
Abdoulaye had already previously been targeted by police, with a 2023 video showing him beaten during an arrest. His death is part of a wider pattern of police violence in France, which leads the European Union in deaths in custody. In 2024, 43 fatalities in police custody were recorded.

🟡 Syria Update — Day 19:
🟡 According to Al-Mayadeen, the Israeli airstrikes that rocked Syria’s Tartus and Latakia cities yesterday measured around 3.0 on the Richter earthquake scale. The airstrikes appear to have been aimed at eradicating the remaining 20% of Syria’s strategic weapons capabilities.
🟡 EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas has expressed that the actions of Syria’s new post-Assad transitional government will determine how the European Union deals with it. An EU envoy is expected to arrive in Damascus early Monday morning.
🟡 Israeli occupation forces have advanced 26 kilometers deep into Syrian sovereign territory from Mount Hermon, inching further towards metropolitan Damascus. The Israeli government has approved of plans to expand settlement building in newly-conquered Syrian territory. Experts believe Israel has already conquered more Syrian land than in the 1967 war.
🟡 HTS commander and Syria’s de-facto leader Ahmad Al-Sharaa, known mostly as Abu Mohammad Al-Jolani, declared on Sunday that all armed rebel factions will be dissolved and integrated into Syria’s new restructured army. Al-Sharaa likewise stated that unlike the dissolved Syrian Arab Army, the new Syrian Army will be a volunteer force with no forced conscription except during extraordinary circumstances where such would be necessary.
🟡 The ceasefire between Türkiye, the Turkish-backed SNA, and the Kurdish-led SDF appears to have broken down, according to sources within the SDF. Ilham Ahmed, a senior official of the Autonomous Administration of North-Eastern Syria, accused Türkiye of pursuing expansionist goals, including plans to extend its security buffer zone along the Turkish-Syrian border. Türkiye has reportedly called for the creation of a militarized zone near the strategically significant Qara Quzaq Bridge, which spans the Euphrates River between Manbij and Kobani.
🟡 Russia’s expeditionary forces in Syria appear to be withdrawing completely from Syrian territory, with an increase in aerial traffic from the country’s Qamishli International Airport. At least two Russian Ilyushin military cargo planes were seen departing from the airport, in tandem with new satellite photos that revealed preparations for the full withdrawal of forces from both Qamishli and Latakia.
🟡 Hezbollah’s Secretary-General Naim Qassem addressed recent developments in Syria and the broader region. He expressed optimism that the country would achieve the stability its people aspire to and dismissed concerns about any adverse effects on Lebanon from the ongoing events. Despite acknowledging the loss of critical supply lines through Syrian territory, Qassem affirmed that the resistance remains resilient and capable of adapting to shifting political dynamics.

🟡Syria Update — Day 21:
🟡The Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP) has called for the formation of a united front to liberate the southern Syrian territories recently occupied by Israel. In the statement, the SSNP affirmed that defending the homeland is a duty for all Syrians across the political and sectarian divide.
🟡US-based Syrian advocacy group “Syrian Emergency Task Force” has claimed that a mass grave located in Al-Qutayfah 40 kilometers north of Damascus could contain as many as 100,000 bodies, based on what the group calls an “unfairly conservative estimate.”
🟡Geir Pedersen, the UN special envoy to Syria, has warned that even with the fall of the Assad government, the Syrian civil war “has not ended,” pointing to the recent flair-up in violence between Turkish-backed SNA and the US-backed, Kurdish-led SDF in northeastern Syria. The special envoy further called upon the UN Security Council for Israel to cease its illegal land grab of Syrian territory.
🟡Murhaf Abu Qasra, the military chief of the group Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS), told AFP that the group would be the first to dissolve itself and integrate into the new Syrian Armed Forces. Abu Qasra further stated that the new Syrian state would remain unified and centralized, and that federalization in relation to the Kurdish people is out of the question.
🟡Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu has said that Israeli forces will remain present in the 1974 Golan Disengagement Zone “for the foreseeable future,” indicating that the land may be occupied indefinitely. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz later instructed the Israeli occupation forces to dig in and entrench themselves in the area with outposts and fortifications.
🟡US Senators Chris Van Hollen and Lindsey Graham expressed bipartisan support for the US-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in what they call their fight “to prevent the resurgence of ISIS.” The two senators highlight what they perceive as Turkish escalation that could “undermine regional security.”
🟡Work has resumed at Damascus International Airport and the first domestic flight to Aleppo since the fall of the Assad government took place.
🟡The EU is close to signing a migration deal with Jordan in relation to the still-pertinent question concerning Syrian refugees, according to Financial Times.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) reportedly plans to include a refusal to supply Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles in its election program ahead of the upcoming snap elections, according to the Berliner Morgenpost.
Scholz has consistently opposed sending these missiles to Ukraine out of concern that it could escalate tensions with Russia. He faces mounting criticism as calls to strengthen military support for Ukraine grow both internationally and domestically. His stance has become a focal point in Germany’s political debate, drawing sharp contrasts between the SPD and opposition parties advocating for increased military aid.
The discussion around supplying Taurus missiles has intensified following the US decision to allow Ukraine to deploy long-range missiles for strikes against Russian targets, a move widely viewed as a significant escalation in the war. While polls indicate that most Germans oppose providing these missiles to Ukraine, several opposition parties, including the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Greens, have expressed support for doing so.
With the collapse of the ruling coalition triggering snap elections, Germany’s political landscape is increasingly divided. The SPD’s firm stance on the Taurus missiles highlights a critical fault line in the upcoming elections, particularly as the CDU leads the polls.

Russia plans to send military personnel to Myanmar to assist the military government in organizing its first post-coup election. The planned deployment by Myanmar’s closest ally and top arms supplier has sparked criticism from opposition groups and international observers.
The election was initially promised by junta leader Min Aung Hlaing after the 2021 coup. After repeated delays, it is now expected for next year. The civilian National Unity Government (NUG) and several ethnic armed organizations (EAOs), however, reject the election’s legitimacy. They accuse the junta of using the election to consolidate power with support from its allies in Russia, China, and India as fighting continues to engulf the country.
Over the past year, the junta has faced major setbacks, losing control of an estimated third of Myanmar’s territory to resistance forces and ethnic armed organizations. Efforts to secure ceasefires in some regions have failed to halt fierce fighting elsewhere, complicating plans for what critics call a “sham election.”
The National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC), a prominent opposition coalition, condemned Russia’s support for the junta. They called it an invasion of Myanmar’s sovereignty disguised as “election monitoring.” Critics see this move as a calculated effort to suppress dissent and further entrench military rule. With backing from Russia, China, and India, the struggling junta aims to maintain power as its diminishing control and lack of legitimacy push the country further into crisis.

It’s day three of Ecuador’s Indigenous strike against the construction of a mega jail in the Amazon. The neoliberal government of President Noboa has deployed the military to surround the Napo region, where protesters have seized public buildings.
Noboa is using the skyrocketing rate of crime as a pretext to build more jails to imprison the unemployed and poor in Ecuador. Crime has exploded ever since leftist President Rafael Correa left office in 2016.
Under President Correa, Ecuador’s homicide rate was the second lowest in South America. Since 2016, the country has had three neoliberal governments and the number of violent deaths has increased by 500%. This has resulted in more Ecuadorians attempting to reach the US as people flee growing poverty and violence.

In what Israeli media described as a “Hiroshima in Tartus,” Israeli airstrikes in western Syria triggered massive explosions and an earthquake of 3.0 magnitude. Israel has launched over 500 airstrikes on Syrian territory since the Assad administration’s collapse.
The latest wave of airstrikes on military sites across Syria coincided with Israeli ground forces advancing deeper into Quneitra province in southern Syria. Reports suggest Israeli forces are now just 15 kilometers from the key highway linking Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, to Damascus.
