🟡 “Nearly 13 million Syrians are still acutely food insecure,” said UN emergency relief coordinator Tom Fletcher. Fletcher highlighted the need for more aid for the people in Syria.
🟡 Israeli ministers met this week to discuss classified plans to promote the balkanization of Syria, Israeli media reported. The ministerial meeting is also said to have focused on Türkiye’s involvement in Syria and the country’s Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham leadership.
🟡 The Israeli army reported destroying Syrian weapons found in the demilitarized zone in the occupied Golan Heights, per Anadolu Agency. The army stated the action aimed “to prevent the weapons from reaching hostile elements that could endanger Golan Heights residents or IDF troops.”

A Turkish drone strike targeting a civilian convoy near the dam resulted in multiple casualties, according to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
🟡 Widespread popular discontent has been spreading in the countryside of Tartous after the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)-led Health Ministry closed 20 health centers.
🟡 Invading Israeli forces continued to advance into several villages in the province of Quneitra, establishing new military points and blowing up weapons depots in the seized territories.
🟡 Israeli forces temporarily arrested French journalist Sylvain Mercadier in Syria as he was covering the Israeli army’s advance into the country. According to Mercadier and his colleagues, his equipment was confiscated and he was subjected to physical and verbal abuse.
🟡 Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has threatened to launch “a military operation” against Kurdish-held territories in northeast Syria unless they accept Ankara’s conditions for a “bloodless” integration into the HTS-led administration in Damascus.
🟡 Talks are taking place on whether US and French troops could secure a border zone in northern Syria as part of efforts to defuse conflict between Türkiye and the US-backed, Kurdish-led SDF, a senior Syrian Kurdish official said, Reuters reports.
🟡 UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, cautioned about “very real threats” to Syria’s sovereignty, noting the Israeli aggression in the south and tensions between the SDF and Türkiye in the north.

🟡 The US Treasury Department has issued a temporary six-month license, which eases the restrictions imposed on Syria through US sanctions. The new license will allow investors and humanitarian organizations to conduct financial transactions with the de facto authorities in Damascus.
🟡 Iraqi authorities have vowed to reopen the country’s main border crossing with Syria next week for travelers and goods. The Al-Qaim crossing, which is located in the Anbar province, was closed in December following the overthrow of the Assad government.
🟡 Türkiye’s president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has vowed to intervene militarily in Syria should the country end up divided. The comments by Erdoğan were made in relation to the violence between Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)-led groups and the US-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Syria’s northeast, which Türkiye perceives as a threat to its ambitions in the region.
🟡 The de-facto authorities in Syria’s capital, Damascus, have concluded what they called a five-day “security operation” in the city of Homs. More than 650 people have been arrested in total, and numerous weapons depots reportedly intercepted.
🟡 The first commercial flight to Syria landed today at the Damascus International Airport for the first time since the overthrow of the Assad government on December 8. The plane belonged to the Royal Jordanian Airlines and departed from Qatar on what was described as a “test flight” to Syria.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) and its forces already have a long history of oppressing Palestinians. But now, since it launched its operation against the Jenin camp in early December, the PA’s security forces have even come to mirror some of Israel’s tactics.
PA forces surrounded the camp with armored vehicles, fired indiscriminately at civilians, and cut off water and electricity supplies.
PA authorities have also killed 21-year-old journalist Shatha Sabbagh, who had been reporting from Jenin, reminding people of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was also shot in the head by Israelis in Jenin while covering a raid by Israeli soldiers.

🟡 Today marks an entire month since the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)-led offensive led to the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government.
🟡 France’s foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Wednesday that EU sanctions on Syria currently obstructing the delivery of humanitarian aid could be lifted swiftly. The comments follow recent decisions by the US Department of Treasury to grant Syria a six-month ease on certain sanctions.
🟡 According to the Financial Times, Berlin is leading a new push for an EU-wide lifting of certain sanctions on Syria, contingent on Syrian political and leadership reforms that would protect minorities and women’s rights.
🟡 Armed fighters of the Southern Operations Room from southern Syria have been reluctant to hand in their firearms to the new de-facto authorities in Damascus, per AFP. They refused to hand in their weapons but stressed their willingness to be integrated into a new army structure.
