Transport workers in Peru are on their third national strike this month against a wave of crime that has exploded under the neoliberal coup government of Dina Boluarte. Union members blocked off all key roads around the capital and beyond.

Workers are routinely the target of robberies, extortion, and assault. The trigger for these protests is a new security law passed by the right-wing government that, instead of providing security for workers, is focused on criminalizing protests.

The current government in Peru was not democratically elected and was a product of the coup against President Pedro Castillo in December 2022. The regime carried out numerous massacres in the Andean regions against Indigenous protesters who were calling for the return of democracy and freedom for Castillo.

Violent clashes erupted in Case-Pilote on the French colony of Martinique. While the French police attempted to dismantle the barricades, they violently arrested a young person with disabilities. Witnesses say the situation escalated due to excessive force used during an identity check, leading to the violent arrest of multiple protesters.

The organizers from the Rassemblement des Partis et des Groupes Progressistes de la Martinique (RPPRAC) condemned these violent interventions, emphasizing that the community does not deserve such brutality.

Discussions took place between the mayor, Jean-Marc Bocquet, and RPPRAC members in an effort to defuse the escalating conflict. Bocquet expressed concern for public safety while advocating for the protesters’ right to demonstrate peacefully. He also reported troubling incidents, including the arrest of a municipal worker.

Unrest in Lisbon intensified for the second day as protesters continued to express their outrage over the killing of Odair Moniz, a Black working man fatally shot by the police in Cova da Moura. In a shocking escalation, police raided homes, including that of Moniz’s mourning family, assaulting a 19-year-old girl and causing damage to their property. The family condemned the aggression, with Moniz‘s sister-in-law accusing the officers of needlessly using violence.

The community‘s anger has only grown, with protesters setting fire to buses and other acts of defiance emerging across Lisbon. Moniz‘s family refutes the police narrative that he posed a threat, asserting he was peaceful and not involved in criminal behavior. They also dismissed claims about a stolen vehicle, stating it belonged to him and accusing the police of trying to cover up their mistake. The officer responsible for the shooting has been placed on temporary leave as an investigation is conducted into the killing.

American Journalist Jeremy Loffredo spoke for the first time about his kidnapping and detainment by the Israeli military. He was held in solitary confinement for three days with barely any food or water before he was released due to public pressure.

On October 8, he and other journalists were abused and arbitrarily arrested at a checkpoint in the occupied West Bank. Jeremy had recently reported on Iran’s missile strikes on Israel and was charged with “aiding the enemy during wartime.” However, Jeremy’s video report about Iran’s attacks contained the same information that was reported in Israeli and other foreign media.

Israel launched a targeted strike on a building housing journalists and media crews from multiple outlets in southern Lebanon, killing three press workers and injuring many others. “We have nothing but the camera and the pictures... Even if we are killed, we will keep talking,” declared Al-Mayadeen’s war correspondent Ali Mortada in a televised address after the attack.

Among the killed are Ghassan Najjar, a cameraman for Al-Mayadeen; Mohammed Reda, the channel’s broadcast engineer; and Wissam Qassem, a cameraman for Al-Manar. Since the onset of the war, Israel has killed at least 128 journalists and media workers across Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. This marks the deadliest period for journalists since CPJ began tracking such data in 1992.

The real figure is likely much higher, as the authorities in Gaza report that at least 175 media workers have been killed in the besieged enclave alone.

Greek dockers have stormed the country’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs as part of their strike demanding better pay and conditions. Earlier in the week, workers blocked a 21-ton Israeli ammunition shipment at Piraeus Port destined for Haifa.

This comes as the wider workers movement in Greece is building towards a general strike against the neoliberal Mitsotakis government. Numerous sectors are fed up with stagnating wages amidst a cost of living crisis.

Libertarian President Javier Milei had an awkward moment yesterday as student protesters in Argentina stormed the central plaza, but he came out to greet them as he thought they were supporters coming to wish him a happy birthday. Police quickly rushed to close off the area when they realized that the crowd were not Milei supporters.

Student protests and occupations have now entered their second week with over 80 campuses taken over by students across Argentina.

The country’s universities were once considered the best in South America. They now face devastating cuts as Milei blocked budget increases in line with inflation. This means that their current resources are massively devalued due to the 209% inflation rate under the free-market regime of Javier Milei.

It’s not just Israel that shows contempt for UN officials; now the German government does, too.

UN rapporteur Francesca Albanese asked German FM Annalena Baerbock to explain her remarks that have sparked international condemnation: that civilian areas in Palestine and Lebanon should lose their protected status so that Israel can carpet bomb them.

When asked about Albanese’s request, Baerbock’s ministry dismissed it on the false grounds that the video of her own words (yours truly, us at red.) comes from the “Russian disinformation ecosystem.”

🟡 NOW: In yet another significant escalation, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has officially backed reports about the DPRK having sent troops to Russia to assist its war effort in Ukraine. The Republic of Korea (ROK) said that the DPRK has sent 3,000 troops to Russia, with 10,000 more expected in the country by December.

The ROK has previously vowed to take a hard-line response to the DPRK sending troops to Russia, including the potential shipment of offensive weapons and intelligence personnel to Ukraine.

Several other of Ukraine’s Western allies have also issued warnings, while discussions on whether countries in Europe should send their own troops to support Ukraine have been revived.
