After allegedly stashing millions of stolen cash in furniture, South African President Ramaphosa’s political career is on trial. The third largest political party, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has brought a case to the Constitutional Court over the government’s handling of a corruption scandal called “Farmgate.”
In 2020, three individuals broke into Ramaphosa’s game farm and found $4 million in foreign cash hidden in furniture. This discovery came to light in 2022 when former spy chief Arthur Fraser accused Ramaphosa of money laundering, corruption, and concealing a large theft of cash. The National Assembly then blocked the establishment of an impeachment committee from being set up to investigate the allegations further.
The EFF are self-described Marxist-Leninists but have faced criticism of opportunism and undemocratic functioning. The leader, Julius Malema, is a staunch supporter of Russia and China.
A femicide occurred nearly every day of 2023 in Germany. There were 938 attempted femicides, with 360 resulting in death. A femicide is the most violent expression of systemic misogyny, killing a woman for being a woman.
The figures are a harsh reality check for Germany, which claims to pursue “feminist foreign policy” as its official agenda. How can you separate the misogyny of the motives for violence against women from structural patriarchy?
With Germany’s unwavering support for Israel’'s war of annihilation against Gaza, in which women are victims at a disproportionately high rate, Germany’s “feminist foreign policy” is unmasking itself as a Trojan horse for imperialist interests.
In 2023, approximately 51,100 women were killed by intimate partners or family members worldwide—a grim rise from the 48,800 victims recorded in 2022. UN officials say that this increase is due to improvements in recording femicides. Nevertheless, the true number of femicides is likely much greater.
At least 170 people were arrested after shutting down the world’s largest coal port in Australia. Kayakers blockaded the shipping lane, forcing a bulk carrier to turn back. This is the second consecutive year the Rising Tide climate activist group organized the “people’s blockade.” 15% of the world’s coal is shipped from Newcastle port.

Feminists across Latin America mobilized yesterday to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, a date that emerged from the women’s liberation movements in this region.
In countries such as Mexico and Colombia, the movement has always stressed the disproportionate effect of the "war on drugs" on working class and Indigenous women who've suffered the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war. In Argentina this year, the issue of austerity and hyper-neoliberalism under Milei was at the top of the agenda at yesterday's march.

Barely 500 meters into their march, a wall of uniformed police blocked the path of the 1,000 protesters-strong march, leading to arrests and police violence. This year, the protest centered around the genocide in Gaza, where women have borne a disproportionate share of the suffering. Despite the crackdowns, the resistance on Berlin’s streets roared on.

The Israel Defense Force’s war crimes are all over social media, but did you know that the IDF’s terrorist history goes back decades? On November 25, 1940, the Zionist paramilitary organization known as Haganah bombed a British ocean liner bound for the island of Mauritius, killing 267 people, including over 200 Jews.
Haganah is the most significant paramilitary precursor to the IDF and committed countless massacres, such as the bombing of civilian targets and the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians during the Nakba.
Not only did the Haganah lay the foundations for the IDF, but they also founded Israel Military Industries (IMI), known for its production of several infamous Israeli weapons. Today, IMI is a subsidiary of Elbit Systems, Israel’s biggest arms producer, supplying the IDF with the means to go through with their genocide in Gaza.

The president of Mexico sent a fiery letter to Donald Trump hitting back at his anti-Mexican rhetoric and policies.
President Sheinbaum, the newly elected left-nationalist leader, reminded Trump that it’s US consumer habits that drive the drug trade. Furthermore, that cartels in Mexico are armed thanks to the flow of guns into the country from the US.

Today, we remember the Mirabal sisters, also known as Las Mariposas, who fought against the deadly dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic, which led to the deaths of thousands.
The three sisters were violently assassinated by Trujillo’s henchmen on November 25, 1960, and soon became “symbols of both popular and feminist resistance.” November 25 has since been designated the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The rising tide of the Mediterranean sea has swallowed up tents of displaced Palestinians in Gaza. As winter arrives, it brings even more misery to over 2.3 million people who have been facing non-stop Israeli bombardment for over a year.
Over one million Palestinians do not have sufficient shelter with winter now bringing cold, rainy weather and increasing the risk of flooding sewage. Israel’s destruction of infrastructure in Gaza, including health and sanitation, has also increased the death rate among displaced Palestinians.
