Villagers threw mud at the Tamil Nadu state Forest Minister as he visited the area in the aftermath of Cyclone Fengal. More than 19 people have died and hundreds of thousands have been displaced across southeastern India and Sri Lanka.
Opposition politicians criticized the response of the ruling government of the Dravidian Progressive Federation in Tamil Nadu. Some have accused the officials of using the relief efforts as photo opportunities. One politician, VK Sasikala, also claimed that the state government prioritized relief to individuals based on personal affiliations.
Cyclones, like other weather-related events, are increasing in intensity due to climate change.

Tensions escalated in Osaka, Japan, when police and court officials tried to evict people at a homeless shelter and former labor welfare center. Police disrupted the soup kitchen while supporters of the homeless rushed to the barricades set up at the premises.
Japanese police have begun enforcing evictions across Osaka in a bid to make drive the homeless out ahead of the Expo 2025 set to be held in the city.
Established in 1970 in Osaka’s Nishinari Ward, the center served as a hub for welfare support and job placement for day laborers. It closed in 2019 for reconstruction to address earthquake safety concerns, and since then has became a makeshift shelter for the homeless.
Osaka Prefecture, which owns the land, filed a lawsuit to evict the homeless. Lower courts ruled in favor of the prefecture in 2021 and 2022, with the Supreme Court upholding the eviction order in May 2023.

This day in 2001 marked the dramatic climax of the economic crisis in Argentina and the moment when the illusion of neoliberal growth came crashing down. The right-wing government under Fernando de la Rúa nearly stopped bank payments, triggering mass panic and riots. The crisis caused a mass uprising, eventually ushering in the leftist Kirchner governments who restored economic growth during Latin America’s “Pink tide” era.
Since coming to power, “libertarian” President Javier Milei implemented many policies that led to the 2001 crisis, namely, “shock therapy” austerity, this time as a precursor for the dollarization of the economy.
Whether he can pull this plan off or be forced to leave power like in 2001 will depend on the strength of Argentina’s social movements, which have been weakened after four years of being allied to a social democratic government that disappointed its supporters by presiding over falling living standards and growing IMF debt.

On this day in 1976, Bob Marley, his wife Rita, and his manager were shot and nearly killed in an assassination attempt widely believed to have been orchestrated by the CIA.
Despite Marley’s popularity, the CIA’s alleged attempt on his life remains largely unknown. The shooting at his home in Kingston in 1976 happened against a backdrop of CIA-sponsored destabilization of Jamaica following the election of the social democratic Michael Manley, who talked tough against the IMF and was close to Fidel Castro’s Cuba.

On this day in 1966, the 12-3 Incident unfolded in Macau, now a special administrative region of China. Inspired by the Cultural Revolution in mainland China, it became a fierce protest against Portuguese colonial rule.
On November 15, 1966, acting chief Rui de Andrade ordered police to halt the Fong Chong School’s expansion in Taipa Island. What seemed a minor dispute ignited widespread outrage. By December 3, protests erupted outside the Governor’s Palace. Protesters clashed with police, stormed public offices, toppled Portuguese colonial monuments, and even attempted to storm the police headquarters.
A violent crackdown left eight dead and over 200 injured, mostly Chinese residents. Overwhelmed, Portuguese authorities swiftly conceded.
Though Portugal retained nominal control for 33 more years, China regained de facto suzerainty over Macau, reshaping the territory’s future.

Cuba’s revolution began on this day in 1956 with the landing of the Granma boat. The boat was carrying the rebel fighters who had been exiled following the 1953 attack on the Moncada Barracks, including the likes of Che Guevara along with Fidel and Raúl Castro. They travelled from Mexico back to Cuban shores to launch the guerilla campaign that overthrew the US-backed dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista.
The landing has become legendary in Cuban history not only because it signalled the beginning of the guerilla campaign, but because of the extraordinary sacrifice of those aboard.
Of the 82 rebels that boarded the Granma, about a quarter of them survived. The poor conditions of the boat, followed by an ambush at the hands of the military as soon as they arrived, rapidly dwindled their numbers. Despite that initial setback, the band of fighters headed to the Sierra Maestra mountains and successfully overthrew the regime three years later.

Serbia and Kosova traded blame over the explosion of a critical water canal in the Serb-majority region of Kosova. The blast occurred near the town of Zubin Potok, less than 20 kilometers from the Serbian border.
Kosova’s government said the incident was an act of terrorism by the Serbian government but has not provided evidence to that effect. Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić denied this and accused Prime Minister Albin Kurti of using the event as a pretext to deploy armed forces to the Serb-majority region.
Kosova declared independence from Serbia in 2008 with NATO’s backing, which Serbia refuses to recognize. The Serbian state long oppressed the ethnic Albanian population of Kosova. The Albanian language and schools were at times banned completely, and Serbia sponsored colonization campaigns to change Kosova’s ethnic composition.
Over 4,000 NATO troops are currently occupying the country under the pretext of maintaining peace.

Today, we remember the victims of the Bhopal gas leak in India, the world’s worst industrial disaster, which killed thousands and exposed over half a million people to toxic gas on this day in 1984.
The disaster resulted from negligence, design flaws, understaffing, absence of maintenance, and lack of training. Basic safety measures that should’ve been taken weren’t just to increase profits at the expense of people’s safety. The first official and conservative death toll was 2,259, but other estimates have put the number as high as 20,000.
Tens of thousands who were exposed to the gas but survived were severely disabled, and many continue to die prematurely today.

The late James Baldwin, the influential Black American revolutionary writer and activist, died on this day in 1987. Baldwin was a groundbreaking author who explored themes of masculinity, sexuality, race, and class, connecting these issues to the key political developments of his era, including the civil rights and LGBT+ rights movements.
Disillusioned by the racism in US society, Baldwin moved to Paris in 1948, where he lived until 1957 before returning to New York. However, in 1970, he returned to France. More than three decades after his death, Baldwin’s work and activism still influence discussions about systemic racism and social justice.
