Did you know that FIFA once tried to force the Soviet national football team to play a World Cup play-off match in a blood-soaked concentration camp? Fifty-one years ago today, the second leg of the play-off for a place in the 1974 World Cup in West Germany was due to be held between Chile and the Soviet Union.
However, following a 0-0 draw in Moscow, the second leg was due to be played at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, where thousands of socialists and communists had been tortured and executed following a fascist coup two months before. The Soviets refused to play in the stadium, and what followed was one of the most bizarre football matches ever. Read on.

Desperate to reach the US before Trump’s inauguration, another migrant caravan has set off from Mexico. At least 1,500 migrants will walk over 1,700 kilometers in a last-ditch attempt to cross the border.
The largest groups within these caravans include those escaping security crises and high poverty rates in neoliberal countries such as Ecuador, Peru, Haiti, and other Central American countries. It also includes people forced out of their countries due to the effects of US sanctions, such as in Venezuela.
This week, Trump promised to use the military to crack down on migrants and begin the largest mass deportation program in history. If implemented, it would inevitably worsen the human rights abuses already being meted out against those trying to cross the southern border.

Willful ignorance? Liberals enraged about Trump’s plan to use the military to conduct mass deportations seem to forget that Biden and Obama both deported and expelled more people than Trump.
Biden, in particular, exploited Title 42 to refuse entry to migrants and asylum seekers by citing risks related to the spread of COVID-19.
The US also proportionally deported more people without any criminal record under Biden when compared to Trump.

Venezuelan President Maduro has warned that right-wing oppositionists who support sanctions “will face consequences” for their attacks on the Venezuelan people. This comes in the context of the new sanctions announced by the Biden administration this week.
The ironically named “BOLIVAR Act” passed in Congress this week would prevent the US government from contracting any companies that have any investments in Venezuela. This will add to the more than 930 sanctions that the US already has in place against the country.

Police brutalized two opposition political leaders, Savo Manojlović and Aleksandar Jovanović, at a protest in Belgrade, Serbia. People tried to peacefully break a police cordon to prevent the demolition of the Old Sava Bridge, an anti-fascist symbol. In 1944, the Partisans prevented the German occupation from demolishing the bridge and hampering the city’s recovery.

Today, the US Senate will vote on Bernie Sanders’ bill to block a $20 billion arms package to Israel. But a year ago, Sanders was staunchly against ending the suffering of the Palestinian people. The late Palestinian writer and poet Refaat Alareer warned of this 180-degree turn.
“What’s infuriating about Bernie Sanders’s position is that he has no political aspirations (he has nothing to lose), and he knows pretty well Israel is committed to genociding the Palestinian people. That means he has always been a racist, hateful, and anti-Palestinian bigot and duped everyone into thinking he is awesome and progressive. F*ck Bernie Sanders. When Israel kills 10k more, he will crawl out of his ancient Zionist a*sehole and call for a ceasefire,” wrote Refaat.
