Māori members of New Zealand’s parliament disrupted the passage of a bill that would reinterpret the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi, which uplifts Indigenous peoples. The MPs performed a haka—a traditional Māori dance and chant—as a vote was about to take place, causing the session to be suspended.
The 1840 Treaty of Waitangi between Indigenous Māori and the colonizing British empire enshrines certain land rights and other protections to Indigenous people. Right-wing New Zealand politicians claim the law is “discriminatory” towards those who are not Indigenous. Thanks to the treaty, the government has been forced to invest in Māori land settlements, recognize their language, and guarantee political representation.
A massive protest is planned in the country’s capital of Wellington on Tuesday.

France’s far-right invited Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who has said that starving 2 million people in Gaza was justified to release the hostages. The clashes between protesters and police serve as a prelude to today’s football match between France and Israel, which French President Macron will attend.
Macron said he will attend as a “message of fraternity and solidarity after the intolerable acts of anti-Semitism that followed the match in Amsterdam this week.” But how did Europe’s elite and the far right, with their history of anti-Semitism, become so-called crusaders against it?

The self-declared Somaliland is about to elect its next president, much to the chagrin of Somalia, from whom it seceded. Both presidential candidates seek international recognition no matter the cost—including selling off the country.
In 1991, Somaliland declared its independence from the Somali Republic. It has its own passport, currency, and army. But it is not recognized by any country in the world.
In January 2024, Somaliland announced it would allow Ethiopia to build a military base on its coast. In exchange, Ethiopia would recognize Somaliland’s independence.
Members of the US political elite see recognition of Somaliland as a way to maintain their foothold in the Horn of Africa and to be able to launch acts of aggression against Yemen in the Red Sea.
More than half the population of Somaliland lives in abject poverty—surviving off $2 per day. All the while, Somaliland’s top politicians maneuver to sell the people and its resources off to the highest bidder.
