Remember International Court of Justice (ICJ) Judge Julia Sebutinde? The only non-Israeli judge who voted against orders for Israel to restrain its genocidal war in Gaza in Gaza is now set to become the new president of the ICJ, the UN’s top court. Could this signal a shift in the ICJ’s approach to Israel’s genocide in Gaza?

106 years ago today, socialist revolutionaries Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht were executed in Berlin, Germany, following the unsuccessful Spartacist uprising. However, their words are as relevant today as they were over a hundred years ago: “What does “regression into barbarism” mean to our lofty European civilization? Until now, we have all probably read and repeated these words thoughtlessly without suspecting their fearsome seriousness. A look around us at this moment shows what the regression of bourgeois society into barbarism means.”

The US expanded its sanctions on Russia, affecting subsidiaries of Russian oil companies in poorer countries. In Serbia, Russia has long held significant influence and has the majority ownership of Serbia’s state-owned oil company, NIS. Now, Serbian President Vučić is saying Russia has to dispose of its ownership, a significant rupture in the Serbian-Russian “brotherhood.”

The Sudanese army retook a major town in central Sudan, dealing a blow to the UAE-funded Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Wad Madani has been under RSF control since December 2023, which allowed the militia to expand elsewhere in Sudan. The city is a crossroads of several highways, and serves as a key supply network. RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo responded to the defeat saying, “Today we lost a round, we did not lose the battle.”
The war in Sudan is presented as an internal conflict, but in reality involves many more players.

Why you shouldn't get too excited about Cuba's removal from the list of state sponsors of terrorism: Cubans argue that the change is insufficient without the lifting of the economic blockade.
It was Donald Trump who placed Cuba on the list in the first place, doing so in 2021 during the final days of his first term. Biden’s decision to reverse this comes days before Trump’s return, who may decide to reinstate it again to shore up his base in Miami.

Latest Developments on the US-Greenland Annexation Plans:
🟡 Greenland is sliding further into the orbit of US interests, just days after President-elect Donald Trump threatened to annex the Arctic giant island militarily.
🟡 Today, Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede announced plans to grant the US greater access to some of the planet’s richest rare-earth mineral reserves.
🟡 Egede also hinted at deeper military integration with the US, a partnership that could turn Greenland into a major eastern outpost for Washington’s operations.
🟡 Even Denmark, under whose crown Greenland technically remains, has softened its stance. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated his government is open to negotiating “legitimate American interests” in Greenland.
🟡 Republican members of Congress introduced a bill that, if adopted, would legally open the door to Trump’s Greenland annexation.

Migrants in Portugal are pushing back against the rising tide of anti-immigrant sentiment through mass protests. Recent protests were organized in response to racist police raids targeting the working-class, multicultural Martim Moniz area of Lisbon.
One raid in particular triggered the protests when police were pictured forcing migrants to line up against walls and searching them in a public display evocative of fascist-era tactics.
While the large pro-migrant demonstration unfolded, far-right supporters attempted to counter protest. However, it drew scant attendance, overshadowed by the pro-migrant march.

Venezuelan President Maduro suggested that Latin American armies should “liberate” Puerto Rico from US colonial rule. His statement was in response to Trump’s recent threats to invade Panama and Greenland.
The comments were made at the International Antifascist Festival in Caracas, a gathering of Venezuela solidarity activists from around the world who reject foreign interventionism and the Venezuelan far-right.
Maduro jokingly proposed that Brazilian troops lead the effort and suggested naming the battalion after Abreu e Lima, a Brazilian rebel leader who joined Bolívar’s troops in Venezuela during the independence wars.
