Libertarian President Javier Milei had an awkward moment yesterday as student protesters in Argentina stormed the central plaza, but he came out to greet them as he thought they were supporters coming to wish him a happy birthday. Police quickly rushed to close off the area when they realized that the crowd were not Milei supporters.
Student protests and occupations have now entered their second week with over 80 campuses taken over by students across Argentina.
The country’s universities were once considered the best in South America. They now face devastating cuts as Milei blocked budget increases in line with inflation. This means that their current resources are massively devalued due to the 209% inflation rate under the free-market regime of Javier Milei.

It’s not just Israel that shows contempt for UN officials; now the German government does, too.
UN rapporteur Francesca Albanese asked German FM Annalena Baerbock to explain her remarks that have sparked international condemnation: that civilian areas in Palestine and Lebanon should lose their protected status so that Israel can carpet bomb them.
When asked about Albanese’s request, Baerbock’s ministry dismissed it on the false grounds that the video of her own words (yours truly, us at red.) comes from the “Russian disinformation ecosystem.”

🟡 NOW: In yet another significant escalation, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has officially backed reports about the DPRK having sent troops to Russia to assist its war effort in Ukraine. The Republic of Korea (ROK) said that the DPRK has sent 3,000 troops to Russia, with 10,000 more expected in the country by December.
The ROK has previously vowed to take a hard-line response to the DPRK sending troops to Russia, including the potential shipment of offensive weapons and intelligence personnel to Ukraine.
Several other of Ukraine’s Western allies have also issued warnings, while discussions on whether countries in Europe should send their own troops to support Ukraine have been revived.

Happy birthday to Black Panther Party (BPP) co-founder and chairman Bobby Seale!
Inspired by Malcolm X, revolutionary independence movements in Africa, and anti-colonial thinkers such as Frantz Fanon, Seale, and Newton founded the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in 1966. Together, they drafted the revolutionary ten-point program that laid the groundwork for the BPP's radical legacy as a movement fighting to achieve Black liberation through revolutionary socialism.

Protests against electoral fraud and the killing of opposition figures have shaken Mozambique. The once-revolutionary Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO) has now become a target of protests by people who are deeply angry with the status quo in the country.
Police fired tear gas and live ammunition into crowds, injuring a security guard and hitting two journalists. A nationwide strike also brought the entire country to a halt.
Over the weekend, lawyer Elvino Dias and opposition leader Paulo Guambe were shot dead. They were preparing a legal challenge to the pending election results that show FRELIMO winning, asserting that electoral fraud had been committed.
FRELIMO has been the ruling party for the past 49 years, since Mozambique achieved independence from Portugal. Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world, 65% of the population lives below the poverty line.

Severe electricity blackouts have hit Cuba, a result of the US blockade having left the island without stable access to fuel.
The country has long struggled with short blackouts, but this latest round are the worst yet. Most of the country has been totally disconnected for long periods of time. The US blockade on Cuba has made importing fuel extremely difficult, and Western sanctions on Venezuela and Russia have made the situation even worse.
Right-wing media in the region point to these blackouts as a failure of the government, without ever mentioning the US blockade. Meanwhile, Ecuador has also been suffering frequent blackouts for months despite not suffering any sanctions. But Ecuador’s energy crisis is rarely covered in regional media.

Unrest in Lisbon intensified for the second day as protesters continued to express their outrage over the killing of Odair Moniz, a Black working man fatally shot by the police in Cova da Moura. In a shocking escalation, police raided homes, including that of Moniz’s mourning family, assaulting a 19-year-old girl and causing damage to their property. The family condemned the aggression, with Moniz‘s sister-in-law accusing the officers of needlessly using violence.
The community‘s anger has only grown, with protesters setting fire to buses and other acts of defiance emerging across Lisbon. Moniz‘s family refutes the police narrative that he posed a threat, asserting he was peaceful and not involved in criminal behavior. They also dismissed claims about a stolen vehicle, stating it belonged to him and accusing the police of trying to cover up their mistake. The officer responsible for the shooting has been placed on temporary leave as an investigation is conducted into the killing.

Watch Fidel Castro’s iconic speech in Harlem, New York, heldtoday in 1995, about the successes of the Cuban revolution.
Castro received a rapturous reception in the predominantly Black area not only because of his strong anti-racist and anti-imperialist credentials, but also due to the success of the Cuban Revolution.
Following a speech at the United Nations General Assembly, Castro wasn't welcomed at a reception held by then US President Bill Clinton at the New York Public Library.
Instead, he returned to Harlem, an area he had previously visited in 1960 when he visited the UN for the first time as the Cuban leader.
Back then he was invited to stay at the Theresa Hotel by Malcolm X leading to a historic meeting between the two revolutionary leaders.

Officers like Martyn Blake are once again allowed to escape accountability for murder driven by racism.
🟡 redstreamnet:7/armed-and-dangerous-britain%E2%80%99s-racist:2">Watch our debut documentary about the killing of Chris Kaba and racism in the UK from last year.
The British police officer who killed Chris Kaba, a 24-year-old Black man and unarmed father-to-be, has been acquitted of all charges. Martyn Blake shot Kaba in the head in 2022, triggering mass protests at the time from anti-racist movements and other communities who’ve long been victims of racist police violence.
Since 1990, a staggering 1,869 individuals have lost their lives while in UK police custody or following interactions with the police. Only one police officer has been convicted since then. British police are four times more likely to use force against Black individuals, who are also seven times more likely to die after police restraint.
🟡 In 2023, red. media published a documentary speaking to Chris Kaba’s family. We explored the issues of racist police brutality in the UK and how it impacts the country’s Black community. Watch here.

Nigerian police violently suppressed protests commemorating the fourth anniversary of the anti-SARS movement. The 2020 uprising brought an end to the fascist police unit, Special Anti-Robbery Squad. At least 22 people were arrested by police who used teargas and fired gunshots.
Protesters gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, where the Nigerian military shot dead 12 unarmed protesters in 2020. The Nigerian government engaged in a systematic cover-up of the massacre, freezing protest leaders’ bank accounts and fining news outlets that covered it.
SARS was well-known in Nigeria for torturing, raping, and executing people with impunity. A powerful uprising led by the youth shook the country to the core and forced the elite to concede. During the entirety of the End SARS movement, at least 56 people were killed.
