On this day in 1973, socialist and Chilean president Salvador Allende was killed in the US-backed Pinochet coup. Pinochet’s brutal rule lasted for nearly two decades, and over 43,000 people were executed, tortured, or disappeared.

Allende took up arms himself during the fascist coup until his death in the presidential palace La Moneda. In his last address to the people, he said, “I will not resign! [...] I will pay with my life for the loyalty of the People” and “They can smash us, but the social processes are not detained, neither with crimes nor with power. History is ours, and the people will make it.”

Under Allende’s leadership, Chile nationalized its mineral wealth and expropriated corporations and banks. However, because capitalist forces were not suppressed, they used Pinochet and the US to install a fascist dictatorship. The defeat of parliamentary socialism in Chile destroyed a lot of illusions about the possibility of overthrowing the capitalist system via peaceful means.

Israel has carried out another extensive attack on Lebanon with over 20 air strikes overnight. Huge explosions were heard and seen in different locations in southern Lebanon.

The attacks come after Hezbollah launched dozens of rockets and drones on Israeli military facilities in response to Israel bombardment. Israel has been bombing Lebanese villages and assassinating members of the group, including one of the commanders of Al-Rudwan force.

The cross border fire exchange has been continuing since October 8, at fluctuating intensity. Hezbollah has stated that its attacks aim to support Gaza and put pressure on Israel to end its aggression on the Strip. In recent days, the Israeli defense minister implied that the war will be moving north against Hezbollah, saying “The center of gravity is moving to the north, we are nearing the completion of our missions in the south, but we have a task here that has not been carried out.”

Today marks 23 years since the deadly September 11 attacks in the US, said to have been carried out by Al-Qaeda. Let’s remember when then-US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton admitted that the US government not only created but also funded the group to fight the Soviet Union, something she even considered a good thing.

On this day in 2003, the Korean peasant Lee Kyung-hae stabbed himself in protest of the World Trade Organization (WTO) forum in Cancun, Mexico. Kyung-hae protested the WTO’s systematic destruction of farmers in poorer countries vis-à-vis its neoliberal policies. In his memory, September 10 has been designated as the International Day of Action against the WTO and Free Trade Agreements.

Free trade agreements enable richer, imperialist countries to dump their agricultural products into poorer countries for much cheaper prices. With such unrestricted importing, they undercut local peasants and farmers who are unable to compete. As a result, farmers face crushing debt and are unable to make ends meet. There have been massive revolts against such agreements in the past few decades, including in India, Mexico, Korea, and Kenya.

A 26-year-old protester was killed during a brutal crackdown by Chile’s notorious Carabineros riot police in Santiago. Thousands gathered for the annual protests leading up to the anniversary of the 1973 US-backed Pinochet coup on September 11. The protest, led by relatives of those who suffered under Pinochet’s brutal regime, was a call for justice and accountability.

Eyewitnesses say the attacker who fatally stabbed the young protester came from the lines of the Carabineros shouting, “I am a counter-protester.” Two others were injured in the attack, and the assailant is now in custody. The Carabineros, infamous for their blurred lines with far-right groups, are known to operate on the margin of law.

Water cannons, tear gas, and forceful arrests were unleashed on the crowds. This escalation marks the second consecutive year that the government, led by self-proclaimed leftist Gabriel Boric, has met commemorative protests with state violence.

Germany is slipping into the shadows of its past as the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) tightens its grip. The party, known for its hardline anti-migrant stance, has pledged to bar refugees and asylum seekers from public events. At a recent press conference in Brandenburg, AfD politician Lena Kotré dismissed “potential innocent victims” of this policy as mere “collateral damage.”

Regional elections are less than two weeks away in the same federal state. After a breakthrough with the first electoral victory of a German fascist party since World War II, the AfD is also leading poll ratings in Brandenburg. Meanwhile, the so-called “firewall” policy—once promised by mainstream parties to block any cooperation with the AfD—is crumbling. The right-wing conservative CDU, which ruled Germany for 16 years under Angela Merkel, is now flirting with the idea of cooperating with the AfD.

Our reporting is under attack; here’s how you can help us push back.

red. media is once again in META’s crosshairs, targeted for exposing the realities in Palestine. META’s restriction notice points to one of our posts about Gaza, for which we’ve been “punished.”

META has openly stated that it removed nearly a million posts in the first three days of the conflict. Human Rights Watch has accused META of “systematic censorship of pro-Palestinian posts,” and we have experienced this bias firsthand.

In October 2023, our page was taken offline during some of the most critical moments of the war. Now, with our Instagram collaboration feature stripped away, we need our community to help us maintain our reach.

Israel’s isolation internationally continues as Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi rebukes his German counterpart about Germany’s unconditional support of Israel. While usually in lockstep with German interests, Berlin’s uncompromising support for the genocide in Gaza has caused even Western allies like Jordan to openly criticize the German government. Jordan itself has normalized relations with Israel and enabled the genocide of Palestinians. All this indicates that the West’s credibility is breaking down further and further even with its own puppet states.

On this day 48 years ago, Mao Zedong died at the age of 82. Mao brought the Chinese Communist Party to power in one of the most extraordinary moments in Chinese history. The peasant turned revolutionary led the Chinese revolution, transforming the country from a poverty-stricken feudal nation into a socialist society. After Mao’s death, Deng Xiaoping led a coup that started the restoration of capitalism in China. Modern day China now continues this legacy of revisionism by using communist ideas to disguise capitalist exploitation.

Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Marseille this weekend, joining a nationwide wave of protests against the appointment of Michel Barnier as the new prime minister in what many see as a coup attempt. The protest wave comes after an election in which the left secured the largest number of seats but saw their candidate overlooked by President Emmanuel Macron.

Protesters filled Marseille’s central squares and main thoroughfares, carrying banners and chanting slogans critical of the new government. Many in Marseille are concerned that Barnier’s appointment will be heavily influenced by the far right, which holds a significant number of seats. Critics argue that this influence could undermine the credibility of his premiership and lead to policies that favor right-wing agendas.

25,000 protesters swarmed the streets of Melbourne against a major arms expo in Australia. The police responded with brute force, deploying over 1,000 officers to crush the protests, leading to fierce clashes. Dozens were arrested.

The three-day international event, “Land Forces 2024,” brags about being the “premier platform” for governments and the global arms industry to shake hands and strike deals. Among the exhibitors was Israel's state-owned Aerospace Industries, a key weapons supplier for their occupying forces.

Police had warned early on that this would be their biggest operation in 24 years. The streets filled with tear gas and pepper spray. Non-lethal rounds were fired, horse-mounted police units charged, and batons swung at protesters.

At the heart of the protests was outrage over Israel’s relentless extermination of Palestinians. Many protesters were carrying Palestine flags and pro-Palestine slogans echoed through the streets.

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump were arguing over who is more pro-Israel at last night’s debate in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, a huge protest against Israel’s genocide in Palestine took place outside the debate venue.

Despite fierce disagreements over domestic issues, there were virtually no differences between the two over foreign policy. The only arguments made were over who can best implement US support for Israel and Ukraine.

Another day, another Israeli massacre in the Gaza Strip. Israel bombed an encampment in al-Mawasi, west of Khan Younis, killing at least 45 people and injuring over 60. The bombing created a massive crater which buried people alive. Civil defense is digging with their bare hands to try to rescue people.

Al-Mawasi has been a designated “safe zone” since Israel started its invasion of Rafah and Khan Younis. The area is crowded with people sleeping in tents with basic infrastructure. Israel has targeted such crowded areas multiple times, killing many people.

With no ceasefire deal on the horizon and the failure of the international community in stopping Israeli war crimes, Israel continues to besiege and bomb Gaza with impunity. Since October 7, Israel has killed more than 41,020 people and injured at least 94,925.

Over a month of inaction has prompted Indian doctors and medical workers to escalate their protests regarding the rape and murder of trainee doctor, Moumita Debnath.

Doctors and medical workers said they will continue to strike despite the Supreme Court’s deadline that they resume work by 5pm on September 10. They have been striking for a month already.

Protests were held across Kolkata marking one month since a trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered while sleeping after a 36-hour shift at the RG Kar hospital. Striking medics are also demanding that the State’s Health Secretary and director of Health Education resign.

In 2022, an average of nearly 90 rapes were reported everyday in India - likely an underestimate. Despite various reforms implemented in the last 10 years, the situation for women has not changed. In 2012, there were 25,000 reported incidents of rape while in 2022 there were 31,000. The rate of conviction is also notoriously low.

She will be buried in Turkey, where her parents currently live.

Ezgi was volunteering with the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) to provide a protective presence for Palestinians against settlers and the Israeli military. She was shot dead by the Israeli military while standing under an olive tree during a non-violent protest.

Earlier today, the Israeli military arrived to the location where Ezgi was killed and asked the neighbors to provide any footage from the killing. They also confiscated a Palestinian flag and a stone with Ezgi’s blood.

During the commemoration, speeches were given by fighters who remained steadfast in their resistance to the occupation. They thanked the people of Jenin for being the backbone of the resistance and supporting it.

The most significant Israeli attack recently was on the Iranian Embassy in Damascus. In response, Iran launched the largest attack on Israel in its history.

While the threat of further US intervention still looms over the country, the violent opposition attacks have subsided thanks to a government crackdown and poor strategy from the oppositions own leader, María Corina Machado.
