Yesterday’s Nazis, today’s victims!
Canadians are outraged at an unopened memorial dedicated to the “victims of communism” which honors Nazis. More than half of the names included in the memorial are linked to Nazis or other fascist groups. The memorial’s original budget was $1.5 million but ended up costing $6 million in public funds and has taken over 15 years to build.
The memorial’s opening was delayed in November 2023 after the Canadian Parliament honored Yaroslav Hunka, a Ukrainian soldier with the Waffen-SS Galicia Division which was under the command of the Nazis. Since then, there has not been a new opening date set.
Holocaust remembrance organizations repeatedly warned the Department of Canadian Heritage of the presence of Nazis on the list. According to their accounts, “the problem did not appear to be a priority.”

Savor the moment a journalist confronts US spokesman Matt Miller’s complicity in the genocide in Palestine the way millions have been yearning for. Miller was pressed on the question of the looming threat of nuclear escalation and then dodged the question entirely on how they can still claim to be “the good guys” a year into Gaza’s bloodshed.

Violent clashes erupted in Martinique as French police intervened at a blockade against rising living costs, resulting in five arrests and several injuries. For over a month, the Rally for the Protection of Afro-Caribbean Peoples and Resources (RPPRAC) has mobilized for fair living conditions.
On October 7, CRS 8, a French unit specialized in "urban violence," dislodged protesters. Their deployment last month is viewed as a provocation, and marks the first time in 65 years such forces have operated in Martinique. Their presence reminds people of the 1959 riots when French authorities killed several young demonstrators. The recent crackdown left at least four protesters injured, including Rodrigue Petitot, a key RPPRAC leader. Authorities reported that eleven police officers were injured.
Martinique remains a French overseas territory, a status many view as colonial. Food prices are, on average, 40% higher than in France, making essential goods unaffordable for residents.

The US State Department has confirmed that at least half of all homes in Gaza have been destroyed or damaged during Israel’s genocide this past year.
Knowing the irreversible destruction of Palestine being done by Israel, Biden’s administration continues to funnel more and more money to the occupying force, while continuing to claim that a simple ceasefire would resolve the conflict and allow Palestinians to return.
Furthermore, the “two state solution” they claim to support clearly becomes an impossibility if more and more of Palestine’s territory is being rendered uninhabitable by both Israeli destruction of Gaza, and colonization in the West Bank.

South Africa’s unions are protesting against neoliberal austerity measures and growing unemployment in the country.
The largest union confederation, Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), is allied with the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party. Nevertheless, the discontent among union members has forced the organization to mobilize on the streets.
The ANC is governing in a coalition with the white-led Democratic Alliance (DA) for the first time since the fall of apartheid. The DA holds numerous government ministries and their influence is pushing the government to the right on numerous issues.

Thousands of people swarmed downtown Frankfurt, Germany, today for one of Europe's largest pro-Palestine protests marking the anniversary of October 7. While arrests were made, the scene remained notably calmer compared to the unrest in Berlin.
Germany has emerged as the epicenter of protests against Israel's extermination war in Europe, according to the European Palestinian Information Center. The country has seen over 4,140 pro-Palestine protests. In the past year alone, 26,000 actions have ignited across Europe.
Despite a year of slaughter in Gaza, our colleagues on the ground there have chosen to stay, placing their lives at risk to continue their crucial work of documenting Israel’s war crimes.
In one year, Israel has killed 175 journalists. In the first two months of the genocide, Israel killed more journalists than were killed during all of WWII.
Our efforts to bring their families to safety were unfortunately shutdown when GonFundMe closed our fundraising appeal after the US State Department falsely labeled our work as “Kremlin propaganda” in a recent press conference.

Falsely declared dead by Israel, Abu Obaida—the voice of Palestinian resistance—marked the anniversary of the Al-Aqsa Flood. Obaida rejected Israel’s claims of victory over Gaza’s resistance. A year of genocide, by the numbers. The most destructive war of annihilation since World War II has left Gaza in ruins. The brutality is so extreme that even some of Israel’s allies are horrified and are distancing themselves in an unprecedented way. Every aspect of life in Gaza is under attack. Even if the airstrikes were to end tomorrow, the two million displaced people have no homes to return to. The land they once knew is gone. Here’s a summary of the devastation.

Numerous mass protests are taking place across Argentina to save health and education services that are on the verge of total destruction under libertarian President Javier Milei.
Doctors held marches against the closure of public hospitals and against low pay. Due to inflation under Javier Milei, most are living below the poverty line.
At the same time, a wave student occupations are taking place across the largest universities. Students have mobilized against Milei’s decision to veto funding for public universities, which many fear is a prelude to massive cuts or even privatization.
Argentina is one of the few countries in Latin America to have free access to universal healthcare and higher education. Both are among the best quality in the region.

Che Guevara was executed on this day in 1967. Did you know that his executioner, Bolivian soldier Mario Terán, was cured of blindness by Cuban doctors?
After retiring into a life of poverty under the neoliberal governments he had defended, Terán was blinded from cataracts in his old age. Then in 2005, Evo Morales was elected president in Bolivia. He brought in Cuban doctors that performed cataract surgery free of charge for working class Bolivians. Terán was among the beneficiaries.

Over 26,000 demonstrations and events for Palestine have been held across Europe in the past year. While most European leaders and governments continue to support Israel’s genocide, the people have stood on the side of the oppressed.
Remarkably, Germany—which is one of the biggest supporters of Israel politically and militarily—had the highest number of pro-Palestine protests in Europe. In one year, there were over 4,140 demonstrations across 122 cities.

At least 31 alleged Maoist guerrillas have been killed by Indian police and paramilitary forces. The clashes are just the latest in the state’s coordinated efforts to crush the movement aiming to bring about socialist revolution.
The attacks occurred in the Abujhmad forest in the eastern state of Chattisgarh, a stronghold of the Maoist movement and an area which contains rich deposits of natural resources like iron and bauxite.
Since 2004, the Communist Party of India (Maoist) has led the armed rebellion by Adivasi people preventing attempts by multinational mining companies and the government to displace them from their land.
