Jacinta Kerketta, an Indian poet of Adivasi (Indigenous) descent, rejected a literature award associated with USAID and Boeing. “As a poet, I want to show my solidarity with the children, women and victims of Palestine,” she said.
Kerketta was awarded the 2024 Room to Read Young Author Award jointly by USAID and the Room to Read India Trust, an NGO sponsored by weapons manufacturer Boeing. Her children’s poetry collection, Jirhul, won her the award.
The Adivasi writer exposed the hypocrisy at play, asking, “How can the arms business and care for children continue simultaneously when the world of children is being destroyed by the same weapons? Because of these concerns, I have declined to accept this USAID-supported award.”
Kerketta’s writings uplift stories regarding oppressive systems in India, including gender-based violence and forced displacement of communities like Adivasis.

The Federal Republic of Germany annexed the German Democratic Republic today 34 years ago. The capitalist takeover of the former state-owned businesses that had been a source of employment for many GDR citizens was an economic catastrophe for them.
The transition from a state that prioritized collective ownership to a neoliberal laboratory for West German capitalists came at the expense of the East German people. For many, their right to work as they had known it abruptly ceased to exist.
Over three decades later, the economic gap between East and West Germany continues to be a dividing line in the country, and, if anything, it is widening. The challenges posed by rising homelessness, a cost of living crisis, and stagnating wages in present-day Germany starkly contrast to the economic stability and guaranteed employment and housing that the citizens of the former GDR enjoyed.

Last night, Germany’s taxpayer-funded state broadcaster, @ZDF, contacted us and essentially accused us of trying to destabilize Germany due to a video we published. The video shows a white German racist threatening to kill a pro-Palestine solidarity activist. The victim, a young Muslim woman, had just left a demonstration in Berlin.
In one email, this @ZDF 'journalist' managed to:
1. Suggest that the incident seen in the video (the so-called 'cut-throat gesture') didn’t happen.
2. Imply that by publishing this video (i.e., doing the journalism they are failing to do), we are trying to destabilize Germany.
3. Do all of this with arrogance.
This sums up the current atmosphere in Germany, where up is down, and down is up. Racist death threats are dismissed, and genocide is denied. This reality has not emerged from pockets of impoverished East Germany but from the top-down influence of the German ruling class.

Protesters in Mexico fought intense battles last night with the police during a march in commemoration of the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre.
Tlatelolco remains one of the worst massacres in the country’s modern history. In 1968, the Mexican Armed Forces opened fire on thousands of unarmed students and civilians protesting against government repression just ten days before the Olympic Games. The death toll from that day is around 400, but the true figure remains unknown.

Students and lecturers joined forces in Argentina for mass marches across the country against libertarian President Javier Milei for pushing devastating cuts to education. Argentina has one of the best university systems in the Americas and it’s currently being dismantled.

Israeli drones hit a weapons depot near the Russian Hmeimim Airbase in Syria’s Latakia province, red. can confirm via local journalists.
More than 50 drones were used in the attack with most missiles intercepted by Russian and Syrian air defences.

Over 1,000 Samsung workers in Chennai, India, have been on strike for four weeks, making it India’s biggest strike in recent years. The protests, held in a makeshift tent near the factory, have disrupted production at the plant, which contributed to a fifth of Samsung’s $12 billion revenue in India for 2022-23.
The Samsung plant employs roughly 1,800 workers. More than 1,000 workers on strike are demanding higher wages and union recognition.
The protests have since been met with repression by Indian authorities. Around 850 Samsung employees and 60 workers linked to the labor group Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), which is leading the protest, were detained before being released the same day.
Samsung has warned the striking workers they risk losing their jobs and has taken CITU members to court, saying the strike is illegal. However, the workers on strike disagree, vowing to continue their protest until their demands are met.
